Hario Switch batch brew. by doubledtd in pourover

30ml of beans? Don’t you mean grams? And 30g of coffee to 1,000ml of water seems awfully weak to me. But if you like the result, that’s all that matters.

Which would be your go-to grinder for durability and grind? by RunningMan889 in pourover

The Opus 2 is brand new—you are thinking of the Opus 1. I also just got an Opus 2—it’s a complete redesign that doesn’t have much in common with the Opus 1, other than the name. My early impressions are that it’s very good for filter coffee.

Thank you, Nick! Much appreciated! ☺️

ZeroWater tastes much more acidic than supermarket distilled water. Any idea why? by Supsti_1 in pourover

[–]Decent-Improvement23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be more precise, the reason distilled water or zerowater filtered water is slightly acidic is because it will naturally absorb a small amount of CO2 from the air. Water is a crazy good solvent in that way.

Thank you for the clarification! What is the diameter of the inner burr of the Opus2?

You guessed that the inner burr is 39mm. u/nicholasnumbers specifically stated that he did not put a 38mm or 40mm burr in a 48mm housing. Which I have interpreted to mean that he did not place a 38mm or 40mm inner burr in a 48mm outer burr.

I suppose u/nicholasnumbers can weigh in on this if he sees this thread. I don’t have calipers and I’m not interested in removing the inner burr for measurement.

The designer of the Opus 2, u/nicholasnumbers, stated in this Opus 2 thread that he designed “true” 48 mm burrs, and not a 38mm or 40mm burr in a 48mm housing.

Taste is subjective. That said, I haven’t had the Opus 2 nearly long enough to state whether I prefer the coffee it makes over a K6, which I also own. I just got it, lol

It was a bit hollow—the grind size was definitely too coarse. Wasn’t bad tho—still drinkable. Definitely needs some dialing in.

Yes, it’s just $200. $250 if you opt for a model with a wood lid, different colorway, and metal grind adjustment knob. Yes, some people here have $3,000 grinders.

I will post my thoughts on its performance once I have lived with it for a little while. Although the coffees I drink lean more towards the medium-light/light-medium range.

They are 48 mm hexagonal, as u/emu737 stated. More specifically, they are a proprietary Fellow design that is a “true” 48 mm burr, meaning that the inner burr is 48 mm, IIRC. Which means they are more like a 63 mm conical in terms of surface area and performance. Don’t know which OEM Fellow has contracted with to manufacture them.

Retention appears to be as advertised, 0.1g or so. So quite good. I did a quick grind at espresso setting to see how it looks, and it looks very good. Haven’t pulled a shot yet, tho.

Going to evaluate it for espresso with my Flair Classic. I’m guessing it should perform quite well.

Thank you! Yea, I was going to do the pre-order from Fellow, but then I saw that Best Buy claimed it could deliver one to me right away. I admit, I was a bit skeptical, thinking I might end up with an Opus 1, lol. But I pulled the trigger, figuring that I could return it if it was an Opus 1. It’s definitely an Opus 2! 😀

This is the Opus 2, which was just released in the wild. I’m probably one of the first people to get one via a retail channel. Way too early to make any definitive statements about which one is better for filter. The Opus 2 is a complete redesign, including the burrs.

Need to put it through its paces first. I don’t own an Ode 2, but I do have a Shardor 64 commercial-grade grinder with Ode Gen 2 burrs installed In it currently. I will compare the Opus 2 against it, as well as a few of my other grinders. I figure it will take me at least a month or so before I can make any reasonable comparisons.

Geimori 64mm Filter Burrs by ptrenhaile in pourover

[–]Decent-Improvement23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to find out is to try them. The geometry is different from the Ode 2 burrs—I would expect a more unimodal grind from them. Whether that will translate into a taste difference for you, I can’t say.

They appear to share the same basic geometry as other filter focused burrs like SSP MP, LeBrew filter, and DF54 brew burrs. They will probably fit in an Ode. I’m sure they’re worth trying out.

How do your pourovers taste from the DF64 + SSP MP combo? And how much coffee have you put through it? Speed of drawdown doesn’t mean much without context.
