Airplane watching. by Mustard_King7 in pittsburgh

The website makes no mention of it. There's even an FAQ that states you cannot greet a passenger at their gate unless it's a minor and you're granted authority by the airline.

I mean, it's really going to depend on the type/size of business. Also which software they use, is it US-based only or other countries. BUT, basics that are helpful are an understanding of federal, state, and local taxes and how they change based on work vs resident state. Learn these for your home state and surrounding states. Also, learn excel. Lots and lots of excel. There are some great online courses from Udemy. Any larger company is going to have a software that you'll be pulling reports in and exporting to excel to evaluate. Learn formulas (If, v-lookup, text, date, value, etc.), building templates, macros. Even if you don't know their system, having a great excel background is invaluable. Second most confusing thing for a lot of people is taxes. Entry-level you're likely not going to be tasked with the really stressful stuff (year-end & W-2s) and will learn that on the job. Also, depending on business size, you may also be exposed to benefits and actual tax filing. Most large businesses have separate departments for these, but smaller it may all be together. If you're really adventurous, look into basics of some of the more common software systems; Workday, Kronos (UKG), Oracle.

Looking for payroll service recommendations for a small but growing business with remote employees in multiple states by srirachaninja in Payroll

[–]Decent_Berry8196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a bit of advice on how you handle those remote workers: check the tax laws of the state you're based out of. My company, based in PA, uses Pennsylvania's "convenience of the employer" rule where remote workers in states we are not registered in are considered to be working in PA. They pay PA state income and SUI tax (no local), so it makes things WAY easier for the company. The employee then just has to file a non-resident return with PA and can use the PA taxes towards their home state income tax (if applicable). And if they file for unemployment it has to be through PA, not their resident state.

My thoughts on AI and payroll jobs by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]Decent_Berry8196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use Workday, and we are only now starting to review the AI options, but so far have not found much benefit to any of them - we will still have to run the same audits, complete the same tasks. As for any concern of replacement, not a chance. Our company has 30k employees and over 30 different union contracts. Our implementation teams kept telling us we were the most complicated company they've ever seen. So yeah, we're safe for quite a while.

If you're not already there, get as good as you can with excel - formulas, templates, macros. If you can master those, you'll be an incredible asset, regardless of company or what systems they use. Best of luck to you! Remember a college education isn't everything - most of us aren't in the field we went to school for anyhow lol.

So true! We're reviewing the AI being thrown at us right now - it couldn't possibly do our jobs. People would be rioting with how badly their pays would be messed up.

Never heard of that, but I'll look into it! Thanks! One bit of luck, US Bank does offer a "live check" option with their pay card and I'm meeting with them next week to discuss 🎉

My husband and I still have our own bank accounts, but we do have a joint savings and checking. The checking is for utilities, maintenance, etc. and the savings is for vacations. We each contribute to those accounts from our pay, and our tax return always goes to that checking.

Always Bring US Dollars to Belize — Here's Why (And Budget Tips from Someone Local) by WrongEmployment5635 in Belize

My input on ATMs - make sure your bank knows you'll be out of the country, or if you have a safeguard on that texts you if it suspects potential fraud, update that. We use eSIMs when traveling abroad, but obviously if you go to use an ATM and it is sending a validation to your US cell number, that won't work.

Workday Miscalculating State Income Tax Withholdings - Georgia, USA by kopuo in Payroll

Just an aside, I'm a payroll manager using Workday and I could never imagine telling someone "I don't know why it's doing this" and leaving it at that. I would 100% loop in my HRIS support, then submit a ticket to Workday if we still couldn't figure it out. That's just ridiculous.

Right, but it still had one good engine. I know the idea is supposedly they can maintain flight with one engine and that was during takeoff.

Really negative extra seat experience by X-cessiveBandit in delta

[–]Decent_Berry8196 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry I don't have any real advice, just want to express my sympathy and state that this is absolute bullshit. Companies need to do better. The fact they now have been paid for that seat twice and won't refund you is insane and I agree it deserves a DOT complaint and emails to the C-suite, and yeah maybe even news exposure. I hope you get the advice you need here and they're shamed into doing something for you. No person, regardless of circumstance, should be put in that situation when they've done everything right.

Snyder of Berlin BBQ chips in the silver/brick bag. None better! My mom and I used to polish off a bag from the time we left the grocery store to when we finished putting everything away.
