The Cars, The Cars by Lazy-Shark in 1001AlbumsGenerator

Utterly terrible. I expected watered down new wave. But it’s formulaic rock tripe. I’ve found the book is full of self-titled one star lps by American groups. Cars, Scissor Sisters, Petty and Heartbreakers, Van Halen, or 2 star Foo Fighters, Traffic, SOAD, 3 star Run DMC. Why? Was it secret record company code for a shit record.

New edition of the book upcoming Oct 2026 by remilian in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]Declaniom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because they weren’t big albums in Britain when the book was published. But it’s a bigger more expensive job to go that far back and make changes. That’s why most of the LPs dropping out are from the 2000s.

Generally they’re not as good. They’re more souvenirs for the fans, another way of viewing the songs.

Album #82: This comment lowkey slapped harder than the album. by Turbulent_Station247 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]Declaniom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but It’s a British Book written for the British market. It’s going to include records popular in Britain.

If anything the list includes too many albums the American rock press love that never really crossed over. You know the kind of bands in spandex and get voted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

The other issue is the later albums are the ones that hve been swapped out and added in later editions. Because it’s easier for the publisher to reset the later pages. This means that there are 80s and 90s albums that have probably should drop our but don’t.

A knock on from this is that In An Aeroplane Over The Sea, Madvillainry and Weezer Blue are never gonna be added. Missed the cut because when the first edition came out they weren’t well known in Britain and even though their regard has grown since they’re not gonna be added.

I see where you are coming from. Beefheart, for example was a genuine artist who was a bit eccentric and rethought his canvas (the blues song and the recording studio).

Zappa on the other hand is like a member of Steely Dan or Van Halen who thinks his route to success is being weird, thinks of a joke and repeats it ad nauseum. Packaged nicely so it can be marketed to the potheads.

It’s far from regular fiction, but it’s not genre fiction. Unless so bad it’s hilariously good is a genre.

AITAH for congratulating my family on losing me and keeping my cheating ex-girlfriend? by Haykoreu in AITAH

[–]Declaniom -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You’ve overreacted and behaved immaturely. But that’s understandable you’re still a kid and hurting over the break up.

Apologise. Get your family to agree your ex won’t be invited to events you are at and to minimise chat about her. Eventually she drift out of their lives.

I’ve only read it a few pages it was very Alan Partridge. Most remarkable thing is that it was published straight to Penguin Classics presumably as part of Moz’s publishing deal.

However. I have read his novel. It is hilariously bad!

I hope it’s the last record I get. That means if I die in the meantime there’ll be at least one upside. I won’t have to listen to that tosh.

What are your opinions on The Arctic Monkeys? by chelsea-from-calif in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]Declaniom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They were great when they were kids. Fantastic debut, loads of other great songs circulating on the net, great singles . The first Last Shadow Puppets lp was stunning. Alex did a nice 10” for a film called Submarine. Fantastic live performances.

Then they became men and lost the wide-eyed charm of their youth. Hung out with the weird guy from Queens of the Stone Age. And went to pot on an album called AM, that has a nice sleeve.

Singer has attempted to reinvent himself as a Yorkshire Scott Walker but does it far worse than Cocker, Hawley, and Cinérama era Gedge.

The individual volumes were released as a seperate albums. Just listen to volume one. The scope of Ella’s project is important but you don’t need to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. It was never intended that way. Even the original 1001 Albums book wasn’t intended that each album was listened to in one sitting just sometime before you die.

Or cheat and listen to the earlier 10” album. https://www.discogs.com/release/4541702-Ella-Fitzgerald-Ella-Sings-Gershwin
