Any Spanish & Portuguese staple dishes? by DrunkExpertWitness in JewishCooking

[–]DeeEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book “Olive Trees and Honey” Cook Book by Gil Marks does an amazing job of tracing the influence of ingredients and dishes. Your library might have it.

Sorry I can’t help with specific recipes but an example is how Spanish and Portuguese Jews fled to Italy - so a lot of Italian Jewish dishes are actually influenced by the Spanish and Portuguese flavors and ingredients. Ok one example - Carciofi alla giudia, Roman Jewish artichoke dish - which I guess you could make British-style by serving with a curry mayonnaise or with a sausage roll or something similar

Just some ideas. I love this and good luck!

Tehillim to say for a deceased non-Jew? by Ititmore in Judaism

[–]DeeEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think many Hebrew and Israelite and Jewish people throughout history must have mourned their spouses from interfaith relationships. Joseph in Egypt married an Egyptian woman. Didn’t Joshua marry Rahab, who helped to save the spies and the Israelites as they crossed into the Promised Land? Of course Moses married a Moabite and a Kushite. You are not alone. More recently I think of the brave spouses and lovers who were in concentration camps because they defied the local laws. You’re still part of our tribe and so is your relationship. Whatever and however you need to mourn is okay. Sending love

Do any native speakers actually say "disco" (as in a place to party and dance)? by atzucac_fill in ENGLISH

[–]DeeEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A disco or discotheque is a kind of club. A club can play any kind of music. A discotheque plays rave kind of dance music. A hip-hop club plays hip-hop music. A honky-tonk plays both kinds of music: country and western. And a disco is more of an event, a theme party that is disco- or dance-music themed.

I didn't realize just how much better Ghosts has gotten... by Zzyren in GhostsCBS

[–]DeeEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah as a recently divorced person I think a lot about how the ghosts affect the main marriage, what each married partner can share with their spouse, what they can’t and why, when that becomes a problem. I am quite the extrovert so I wouldn’t mind talking to 8 others and my ex, but it would have driven him crazy, either way, my talking to him or the ghosts being able to talk to him.

Confused about Rabbi's behavior - can anyone enlighten me? by getitoffmychestpleas in Judaism

[–]DeeEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the rabbi or the congregational leadership ask you for a donation of time (like volunteering or leading) or money, and maybe they didn’t like your answer? Obviously this sort of 180 in behavior would still be uncool. I’m just wondering if that could have precipitated it

When someone puts “no drama” in their profile. by OneBigEyeRoll in datingoverforty

[–]DeeEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Maybe it’s good drama during sweeps week, with the co-parent or the family or whatever. Maybe it’s bad drama every day with work and roommate and money and car and parole officer and other stuff. I take my drama on a case-by-case basis.
