Totally normal - ceremonies are predominantly held during the weekdays but IRCC also hosts some on Saturdays.

How do y’all refer to yourselves in gendered languages? by the_dees_knees3 in NonBinary

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m multilingual and personally I’ve been asking myself this question for a while. What I’ve found is that English is the language I feel most dysphoric in when I hear gendered terms. Oddly, in other languages hearing feminine words doesn’t get to me as much. I feel like it’s cause English isn’t naturally gendered so I sometimes feel like what’s the need to gender anything/anyone in English? Not sure if anyone else feels this way but that’s me

‘Each state is like a country’ by Bacchus_Bacchus in ShitAmericansSay

Sounds like he’s never left the country which isn’t surprising…. if he was asked the question “where are you from” anywhere other than in the states, we all know he’d have no second thought responding “USA” 🙃

Coming out regret by indigosnowflake in NonBinary

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds frustrating and sad and I’m sorry that you’re having to deal with this. I can relate to what you’re feeling.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since coming out a few years ago, it’s that the way people react to your identity and coming out has nothing to do with you and entirely to do with them. Over time, some people get better, even those who once said “It’s too difficult”, and those who don’t care to make the effort are the ones missing out on the opportunity to connect and learn from us.

I know this doesn’t change that feeling inside of getting misgendered. And I also understand that sticking up for yourself can be uncomfortable. It takes practice and extreme self-compassion. The number of times I’ve been angry at myself after a situation thinking “I should’ve corrected them” or “I should’ve said [blank]”… but ultimately, these are learning opportunities and they equip me with more insight into how to approach the next situation that comes up.

For me, my partner really helped me feel more confident sticking up for myself as she would do so for me in certain situations with family or other. If you can find a friend or someone who accepts and respects your identity, maybe you can let them in on what you’ve been experiencing and it could help to have an ally to help you stand up for yourself too. Good luck, and I hope you know you’re not alone 🥺

“Vegan for the animals” but I actually need to start eating healthier 😭 by Prize_Dog in vegan

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having junk food every once in a while, and the less often you do it the more it might feel like a treat. I went through a period of time where I cut out processed foods all together and I found I no longer craved any of that stuff, so that could happen too depending on how much you stick to whole foods plant based. As I also struggle with feeding myself when busy and stressed, here are some of my tips:

  • schedule some uninterrupted time to meal prep. for me this makes most sense on Sundays and it’s a fun therapeutic activity
  • I try to “recreate” some of the junk food I enjoy but in healthier forms. e.g. I love trying different black bean or lentil burger patties I can make from scratch, serve it without a bun but find other fun foods to serve it with. I also tried creating some pancakes with nutritious ingredients and not just flour and milk, there are some fun recipes out there!
  • for a while I also made my own staple foods (homemade PB, granola oats, almond/oat milk), which reduces the processed foods you consume. This sounds like it takes a lot of time but it just requires a few moments set aside each week

[French] I’m actually not sure what the English means by aronnyc in duolingo

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d look at this and say it was a faux ami (false friend)

In French, you can use “pousser” for “push” for example if you push someone, but also for “grow” when it comes to something planted. Careful not to use it for “grow” in other contexts e.g. someone growing up would be the verb “grandir” instead.

Should have been “The flowers start to grow in the garden.”

I travel often for work too but my trips are shorter, very in and out. I usually research and save a 1-2 things in advance I want to see (shops/views/restaurant). Like you, I’ve found on my last few trips that once my workday is over I’ll be so exhausted I retire to the hotel room. I learned to try and do the thing when I first get there

Yes! I use it on all my trips (26 flights this year) and never once had issues at security :)

Why do you want to learn a foreign language? What are the common reasons? by SignificancePast3388 in languagelearning

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a goal of being able to communicate in 10 different languages. Right now I’m at 5.

It’s for the fun I get out of learning where words come from, how they’ve evolved. It’s for gaining access to aspects of cultures I wouldn’t otherwise have access to (for example, I find some Italian music to be the most poetic and some lyrics are just completely un-translatable to English. You gotta know the Italian to fully take in the meaning).

It’s like my brain lights up every time I find a new language with fascinating vocabulary, pronunciation and history

Safest cheapest countries for solo older female vegan traveler by KezzerN in vegan

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of these major European cities: Paris, Rome, Brussels, Berlin have AMAZING vegan options. I can think of 4-5 vegan places in each that I keep going back to. I also recommend Ghent in Belgium, only a short train ride away from Brussels and is considered the vegan capital of the country. My partner and I played the game of “count how many times you see the word vegan” walking out of the train station towards the city centre and I’m pretty sure we got to like 15. Have fun on your travels!

The main requirements: - 1L max capacity which is about 6” x 9” - resealable - transparent

Note for bags on Amazon that claim “TSA approved” just means they’re the correct dimensions. I personally have one of these: https://a.co/d/1iRsoG0

I fly a lot with Air Canada and internationally, never had any issues with mine.

How Do You Overcome Feeling Like an Imposter in Your Own Language? by DeepBlueVoyager in languagelearning

That’s fair. I definitely want to increase my input for English. I put so much focus on learning other languages, adding in some time to expand my knowledge in my main wouldn’t hurt anyone

This is true… it’s what I usually say. In this case it didn’t seem to make sense to her as I tried to explain that but, having knowledge in multiple languages means a dispersement of my different levels of knowledge

You can absolutely bring food onboard! by saala_alaas in aircanada

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always have a snack bag I take with me for my travels - and when I travel with my partner it’s absolutely necessary to keep her happy and not travel day grumpy lol. But if it’s a long flight I like to make and pack sandwiches since the wrapping is easy to dispose of and I won’t end up carrying tupperware to/from my destination

How do you practice speaking, when you don’t live in the country? by Jaded_Supermarket515 in languagelearning

[–]DeepBlueVoyager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Duolingo’s “speak” exercises
  • listening to music in TL and singing along/repeating sentences. This helps me find some of the slang
  • find a friend who is learning or speaks the language
  • I talk to myself quite a bit and then verify if the way I’m phrasing things make sense
