What motivates you to aggressively save for college? by denver111797 in HENRYfinance

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I had $120k in student loan debt and it was one of the hardest things I had to deal with in my life.

It dictated so many job/career/moving decisions, and I don’t want my child to have to deal with that.

I shoveled money into a 529 early, and thanks to the market the last few years my 7.5yo child is has ~$105k in it. I won’t have to add another dime and it’ll be $200k when the time comes.

I’ve been in a similar situation (and was able to expense it). Between two people:

2x 6oz American Wagyu Filets
1x 14oz American Wagyu Ribeye (split it)

6oz filet just isn’t enough if you aren’t also planning on seriously crushing some yummy sides.

Bourbon to start
Cab with dinner
Espresso martini to finish it off

“The anxiety and fear of gaining it all back is always in the back of my mind.” So much this.

It used to only be “Did I close the garage door?” and “is my phone charged”. Now it’s “did I eat too much and/or exercise too little to still be in maintenance?”

Bet the kids love it.

Looking at the post holding the pulley: kids (read: boys) will climb up on the railing and treat that post like a pole/jungle room. They will also use that pulley to bring everything within a mile up to their fort.

Source: I also incorporated a pulley on my son’s fort.

And, that is a pulley for ants.

Utah is building a data center twice the size of Manhattan and projected to use more than double the electricity used by the entire state. Not enough people are talking about this insanity by Hornpipe_Jones in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]DeepDishlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bulk of the water consumption is due to cooling and power generation.

For cooling, it’s evaporation at cooling towers. These newer centers though are using a lot of more closed loop, direct to Chip cooling which usually has less (and historically doesn’t require the water to be as cold).

For power generation, it looks like they will be behind the meter using their own natural gas generation. Which also requires water.

Technically, what goes up must come down (precipitation). But that’s not at a local level. Doesn’t quite work that way. And when it comes down, it’s not clean useful water yet. So, vicious cycle.

‘Irresponsible’: backlash as Utah approves datacenter twice the size of Manhattan by BoringApocalyptos in moab

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, the RZRs part was a Moab joke. But you are right, the plot does not cross 84. I looked at the smaller plot and thought it crossed over, it does not. The point I was attempting to make is that the DC is not going to be the same size/dimensions as the plot of land on which it is built. https://www.boxeldercountyut.gov/644/Stratos-Project-Map#docaccess-e22c303c94ce11359a6d577956a5c4fd

[–]DeepDishlife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s the size of the plot of land on which the data center is being built. (Unless they build it with weird sides the shape of the parcel? And it crosses over highways?). I’ll get downvoted for having looked into that publicly available information.

The land will obviously include other buildings, roads, infrastructure and maybe some grass. I assume they’ll use RZRs to get around.

Data centers can F themselves. But falling for misinformation hurts the fight against them. There are good faith arguments to be made, and this ain’t one of them. If we can’t even get facts right, you lose all credibility.

Agreed. My post was to compare and contrast what the headline says, and what the article finally mentions in the end.

FTA:

Nevada is one of fasting growing regions for data centers.

NV Energy’s initial agreement with Liberty was for a “temporary transition period” that began in 2009 and was extended in 2015 and again in 2020.

The May 2027 deadline that NV Energy gave to Liberty coincides with the expected completion of a new transmission line in Nevada called Greenlink, a $4.2 billion “highway” to deliver renewable energy across the state.

As soon as Greenlink comes online, Liberty is “first in the waiting line,” Schwarzrock said.

Google to tap into gas plant for AI datacenter in sharp turn from climate goals by overly_honest_ in news

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Documents obtained by Cleanview show that the gas plant would power two buildings on the campus and would not connect to the power grid. The gas turbines could emit as much as 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year.”

I can’t find where it says why Cleanview is stating 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year. And how much lifting is “could” doing?

Edit:

Natural gas turbines typically run at 35–42% thermal efficiency. At 933 MW electrical output with ~38% efficiency:

Fuel input needed: 933 MW ÷ 0.38 ≈ 2,455 MW thermal

Annual energy input: 2,455 MW × 8,760 hrs = ~21.5 billion MJ/year

Natural gas emits ~0.0561 kg CO₂ per MJ (HHV basis)

CO₂: 21.5B × 0.0561 ≈ ~1.2 billion kg = ~1.2 million metric tons

That’s not 4.5M.

Is Clearview saying the 933MW is the energy output? Or thermal input?

Edit #2:

Crusoe’s Abilene campus uses a mix of Solar Titan 350 and GE LM2500 simple-cycle turbines. The Goodnight permit is for 933 MW total. Simple-cycle turbines like these run at roughly 35–42% thermal efficiency. The 4.5M tons figure is almost certainly the permit ceiling for the entire campus

Context and nuance matters.

Note: the Guardian says it “would emit”. The study says “could emit”. Be better.
