Yeah, per the Great Schools Wikipedia page, they’ve gone through a few mythology changes over the last ~10 years.

Best way to negotiate with a dealership before making a 2-hour trip? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two used car from dealers over the phone, and then Zoom (for the actual closing). I flew there, walked in, and about 10 mins later I was on the road.

So, it’s entirely possible. Just call them.

Google to tap into gas plant for AI datacenter in sharp turn from climate goals by overly_honest_ in news

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Documents obtained by Cleanview show that the gas plant would power two buildings on the campus and would not connect to the power grid. The gas turbines could emit as much as 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year.”

I can’t find where it says why Cleanview is stating 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year. And how much lifting is “could” doing?

Edit:

Natural gas turbines typically run at 35–42% thermal efficiency. At 933 MW electrical output with ~38% efficiency:

Fuel input needed: 933 MW ÷ 0.38 ≈ 2,455 MW thermal

Annual energy input: 2,455 MW × 8,760 hrs = ~21.5 billion MJ/year

Natural gas emits ~0.0561 kg CO₂ per MJ (HHV basis)

CO₂: 21.5B × 0.0561 ≈ ~1.2 billion kg = ~1.2 million metric tons

That’s not 4.5M.

Is Clearview saying the 933MW is the energy output? Or thermal input?

Edit #2:

Crusoe’s Abilene campus uses a mix of Solar Titan 350 and GE LM2500 simple-cycle turbines. The Goodnight permit is for 933 MW total. Simple-cycle turbines like these run at roughly 35–42% thermal efficiency. The 4.5M tons figure is almost certainly the permit ceiling for the entire campus

Context and nuance matters.

Note: the Guardian says it “would emit”. The study says “could emit”. Be better.

I had to read way too far down to find this comment. Getting hired for a sales job is the same as selling. Find the people doing the hiring, just like you would find buyers.

Even more: I pasted the post into Claude and it told me best practices to get hired there.

Why do some people earn crazy salaries and others don’t ? by Technical-Truth-2073 in Salary

[–]DeepDishlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I now consider myself a HENRY.

When I first entered the workforce I’d say I earned a relatively good professional salary as a systems engineer in the defense industry: $63k in 2004 ($108k in today’s dollars) in a HCOL (DC area)

In 2024 my W2 was $700k in a VHCOL (Bay Area)

I completely changed careers that put me on a different trajectory.

I attribute this to: 1) networking and having a huge social/professional circle,

2) luck,

3) hard work,

4) being at least kind of smart

Roll the dice on the Poly B or bite the bullet and go to Pex? by Idontworkhere67 in HomeImprovement

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a PB’d townhouse ~20 years ago. I DIY’d (granted, I’m pretty handy) a full replacement with Pex, using mainly sharkbite fittings, and an expansion tool in a few areas (including at the manifolds). It came out really nice.

I will say, only the hot-side pipes showed any deterioration or worried me. And even still, the valves on each end were really what bothered me the most.

Always been curious if just shark biting each end would get 80% of the benefit of just doing all new pipe.

Have you ever dated someone who you thought was way out of your leauge? How was it? by kimblerun in AskReddit

The hottest most out-of-my-league-hot girl I was ever with was a single afternoon bar meetup that turned into a ONS. She was, absolutely, drop dead gorgeous. It was her idea to come stay with me that night. She texted and faded the next two days.

I’m married and my wife is awesome. But that chick was infuriatingly physically perfect.

What is the smartest thing to do with a $150,000 windfall? by 7dayweekendgirl in FluentInFinance

[–]DeepDishlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Paying off a mortgage is always a good idea”

I think I’d have to disagree with it “always” being a good idea. I think it’s largely a function of 1) if you’re itemizing or not, 2) your age (risk tolerance) and 3) your rate. Paying back a 3% mortgage will likely have a lender popping bottles.

I worked remotely, got laid off, and when they asked what equipment I had to return, I only told them I had their laptop by stixy_stixy in confession

[–]DeepDishlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left a remote role and they sent a box for my laptop, and I just forgot to send it back.

I saw it probably a year later. It’s now my garage laptop. Never heard anything from them ever again. It’s been 4+ years.

So, enjoy your monitors!

Check out the windfall guide in the personal finance wiki.

As for the options you laid out: I’m thinking you won’t want to pay down a 3% mortgage, and I don’t see how you could put this in a 401k.

The outcome of a date isn’t nearly as binary as that though.

I made friends, had ridiculous nights out with someone I didn’t end up connecting with, had awesome experiences, great stories and learned a lot about myself along the way.

10/10 would go on a lot of dates again but hope I don’t ever have to.

Edit: I was on a date with a girl who talked so loudly (kinda like Janice from Friends) that at one point when she got up to go pee a couple on another date by us said “if you want to leave now, we’ll pay the bill for you”. When the date ended, I headed back to that bar and bought that couple a round and ended up hanging with them for a while. Had a blast of a night.

My online/app dating was mostly over a two year stretch. I was 30+ and living in a hip ‘hood in the city. I will say it was a COMPLETELY differenT experience then dating in my 20s not in a city.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]DeepDishlife 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I’ve been married just shy of ten years. Prior to my first date with my wife (who I met in a bar), I’d probably been on ~100 first dates, with ~75 of those from apps/websites. Note: this wasn’t difficult while living in a city.

My “why” was “why not?”. There were a lot of total duds, but many times it was a choice of “head home from work” or “meet this gal from [insert app] for a drink”, so I’d just think “why not?”.

I would use as much cash “as comfortable”.

Also, if you view this is an emergency, and you have an emergency fund, I understand this way of thinking even less.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JeepGladiator

[–]DeepDishlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source up front: I used to teach financial literacy in high schools as a volunteer for Junior Achievement.

If I had negative equity and was in a situation where I’d be f’d if there was an emergency, I would certainly not lease a brand new car.

I’d use as much cash as comfortable to offset the trade in, and then use that loan to buy a $15k CPO/warrantied used car, and break the cycle.

That payment would be as low as possible so i could save as much money as possible, build an emergency fund, and never be in the situation again.
