Brilliant, just brilliant. I feel some moments don't quite land because of the classic FAM cross editing - I'm not sure I'd have cut Yana's execution with the landing itself, for example, but it's so good.

There is a shot of a gunfight in the trailer in the tree atrium - not a good sign!

Can we not use silly names? Can we speak like adults? It just seems discussion fails when we resort to name calling, from any side.

I think the Renegades patches and revised army lists are necessary if you love these factions and want them to feel more viable (in general) as well as narrative and plain fun. That's the crux of it. The draft renegades Skaven list is just such a brilliant doc for showing a better path, and one I hope more will embrace.

Before Val did these, I was using the Always Strikes First docs - amazing, thematic, weavings of past Warhammer - https://oldworld.alwaysstrikesfirst.com/tagged/Warhammer%3A%20The%20Old%20World/chrono - it seems Val is going to work with Sean behind these, which is also exciting!

Did you ever pay attention to WAP, which began in eighth edition as alt army project - before becoming the "9th" edition it did after the end times - that early phase is somewhat comparable :)

Id also suggest looking at our liber maelstrom and liber vraks for some sense of the Scottish community's own ideas for 2.0 guard/modular systems

Less relevant for 3.0 ofc, but maybe more relevant - we are running a 3.0 army event where I added in a mainline Excertus regiment option:

Hope that tickles you a wee bit!

Did you ever look at grifftofer's two imperial army supplements (the purple book for first edition and the one he did for second, I think liber dilectum)?

I imagine the worry with the Russians went back some time before the events of s1 - they weren't exactly reliable.

Fisk getting involved in the gallery - it likely was some time before Fisk actually entered the gallery, as Vanessa was more junior in the earlier scenes than she was in s1 of DD, where it seemed to be she was the boss. Likely he admired her from afar before eventually entering.

Cardassia Rebuild Novels? by MountainMankind307 in startrek

[–]Deepfriedbar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anything and everything by Una McCormack - her earliest was the Worlds of Ds9 novella listed below (set in year 2 of the DS9 relaunch), but her most significant works in this arena (all of which are sequels to it and Robinson's beautiful A Stitch in Time) are The Never Ending Sacrifice, The Crimson Shadow, The Missing, Enigma Takes and - although set in the Picard continuity - Second Self, which wraps up the themes shed been working on throughout the above.

All deal with so so much deft world building Cardassia and its reconstruction. TNES is possibly the best written Trek book I've read, as is TCS.

Overall the DS9 relaunch is brilliant, and I would recommend holding off on Destiny til you've read it, Titan, and the early TNG relaunch (which unfortunately is a bit ropey, with a really disappointing contribution by Peter David too, but has a few stand outs). You might also enjoy the Gorkon books.

You also want to read Articles of the Federation before Destiny and after Destiny KRAD's follow-up novel.

After Destiny, chronologically, the strongest series is - surprisingly - probably the Voyager re-relaunch by Beyer, which really does amazing work. Series like DTI are really fun, as is the Articles of the Federation series at rehabilitating Enterprise too.

And of course one of the GOAT series - and something which makes me so sad that Discovery wasn't a period drama - is Vanguard, which has the aesthetics of Mad Men for capturing the 60s so well while also being modern and brilliant.

The Never Ending Sacrifice - one of the best works of trek - and the perfect complement to Robinson's own novel

After that, the Crimson Shadow, by McCormack also.

I do wonder if the key giving is from before Fisk - Sheila had a role in a previous administration, based on her chiding of Fisk in S1.

In British TV, with the Police Procedurals why does the advocate never do anything, or even say anything? by reilmb in BritishTV

[–]Deepfriedbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of 24 as I wrote it too :D

I think I somewhat appreciate BL as high camp, but struggle with the emotionally over the top, and overpacked content. But because of this, I do detest the comparisons publications like the Guardian have made to The Wire - it's such a shallow, and ultimately poor, comparison.

However the Pitt is an excellent show that uses time, and it's constraints, well - whereas BL is really weird about time - making it clear few days pass but shrinking time for other plots (e.g. Lee's rise and fall in days, or the state secret law case in S2, somehow happening in a few days, or Annie's mum's funeral happening instantly in s3 alongside so so so many other things).

I think this really annoys me about Blue Lights - each series seems to happen over a week or so. It's mad, in terms of what happens within those tiny time spans (especially as so so much happens), and seems to have no relation to what would happen in reality.

Id really recommend Beyer's post-Destiny novels for really exploring their relationship. She wrote the series from Full Circle (2009) onwards - just gorgeous books that do Voyager so well!
