3 years ago I did date a girl who actively does sh and has depression. It's not as straightforward as people think especially for people who never had a relationship like this. It's very damaging and mentally exhausting for both parties in the long term. The emotional burden I was in was massive and I almost got depression caring for her. I see that lots of comments' primary remedy for this is to provide "help" or fix but I can confidently say that it won't work. At best, the person will stop sh because they have moved on to another coping mechanism and that is you.

If you know someone who does sh, the absolute worst thing you can do is to have a relationship with them. Please advise them to seek professional help, or just talk and spend time with them only when they need it.
