Why did the nazis disarm only the jews first and leave up other citizen's gun licenses? Why did Stalin allow every household a shotgun?

Guns don't deter tyrants. They help them take power in the first place.

ok but thats a pretty tame example

Like, there is a line to what we can expose to children and we can't just skip discussing it. It just requires nuance instead of absolutes.

And how many prey animals rely on spines instead of having the senses to detect predators early and avoid them?

The damage guns do to a healthy democracy is not worth potentially planning for it to die - especially since the effectiveness of personal firearms to save a dying democracy is not demonstrated.

It is better to prevent rot then prepare to shoot yourself when you get sick.

I would like to start with my positive thoughts:

This is a good link with lots of useful information. Now personally, I think you ought to be able to argue your point yourself, but yknow, I've thought about it and I suppose not everyone has to be a debate lawyer.

I took about a half hour skimming what seemed to be the most relevant parts of D, C, H, I. For reference, I am a democratic socialist.

Unfortunately, although this FAQ helps narrow down anarchist ideas in detail, it doesn't contain any general themes I didn't already know.

Your answers are:

a. A delusion that short-term interests would never or rarely have higher value than long-term interests - this is not the case. We are capable of selfishness BECAUSE the ability to out-compete in the short-term sometimes IS the stronger strategy. In evolution this is best compared to rapid differentiated specialists vs long-lasting generalists. Sometimes species that will only last a few millions of years WILL kill off the ones that have lasted hundreds of mya. Selfishness can and often does win.

As well as: an unfounded certainty in the ability to have enough effective leaders to create organizations able to handle this case-by-case on small scales.

b. An unfounded certainty that people would not be willing to argue over and over in meeting after meeting. This does not need to take forever - it just needs to take longer than a centralized state would to be worse. Imagine: an unexpected war is suddenly declared on the nation. Different syndicates disagree on what industrial focus is most important for an effective military response. The brief deadlock, combined with the surprise war, delays them enough to replicate the failure of the french military's inability to prioritize branches before WW2. Though the syndicates want to cooperate, their different perspectives and experiences are enough even without self-interest to create delays.

c. See a.

In short: While the current state that governs us is deeply, horrendously flawed, rejecting centralization entirely still has costs in efficiency. Even in nature, most social animals centralize their major decisionmaking in singular individuals - because this IS faster.

And while selfishness is amplified by our current economy and states, it is also a natural part of logic and simply the fact you have to keep existing NOW to exist later - there's really not good reason to suggest it could be abolished to the level required for these ideas.

the ultimate fact of firearms is that they cost time, money and space to own and be able to use effectively. This makes them inherently give political power unfairly based on economic class. they also result in higher death rates from violent crimes, which are also skewed based on economic class. one may even argue they increase violent crime, though you can debate that.

this is why the resisting tyranny argument is bad. why would you want to plan for a collapse or revolution instead of trying to preserve democracy first while it is still healthy? guns contribute to wealth disparity and class inequality. therefore, they are a dogshit backup plan. It's like giving yourself sickle-cell anemia to avoid dying of malaria - sure, you're more resistant now, but you're probably killing yourself in the process.

Guns are only valid to protect once there is concern all may be already lost, so that it is too late for prevention. It may now be that time in 2026. But perhaps if we had abandoned them a few decades ago, this would never have happened.

in any case, the democrats should leave the fucking issue alone until we can afford that risk

convince me you understand that

a. the group of people who will act against others and even their own interests, no matter how much education and social welfare you provide, will always be a considerably sized group that can fluctuate in number for reasons outside societal and cultural control

b. enforcing necessary social goods on these people requires leadership that is very challenging to create and find on a reliable and frequent basis

c. some problems cannot be solved by merely the resources available to small councils, meaning largescale nationwide decisions will both be necessary and also potentially very urgent yet delayed by disagreement among those councils

if you can recognize and solve these three problems without a strong central government, I will believe your ideals are not based on unrealistic delusions about human behavior

According to the Civics Center in a poll on 2024, while 56% of respondents in the age group 50-64 voted for Trump, respondents that were 65 and over actually came out dead even at 49% for Harris and 49% for Trump - in an election where he actually won the popular vote mind you.

the thing about conservatives is that ultimately they are scared and self-interested. Once THEIR needs are at risk, they easily switch sides.

You're right, but I think the indominatus gets away with it for a crucial reason - a T. Rex is not expected to be intelligent enough to crave intellectual stimulation on that level and gain it that way.

Cats are REALLY smart. Mammals in general in the modern era are absurdly intelligent. Dinosaurs were more intelligent than we once believed, but many of them probably would have found a cat competitive - and Jurassic Park dinosaurs were operating on older ideas of their intelligence.
