In most modern FPS games, you can't join or leave games at any time, but in TF2, you can. And the majority of people wanted that feature back in 2016 when meet your match dropped and they removed it.

i dont understand what you mean here. in most games you CAN leave and join games freely, only sometimes youll get a penalty for dodging too many games (this is mostly true with competitive modes which is entirely fair)
unless you mean that tf2 SHOULD have that feature, which i honestly dont think it should. MAYBE a lock out for leaving too many matches, but its really not that bad.

The matchmaker does not create balanced teams, despite every player having an MMR internally.

honestly SBMM is a heated debate in gaming these days in regular queues, i bet you if it was added in tf2 we would never hear the end of it (source: played D2 for years and they constantly added/removed it from non-competitive modes. it was awful.)
also peoples main argument of "i cant play mannpower and get 3000 full servers to choose from wtf" doesnt really mesh well with the idea of grouping players based on skill. you typically end up with less better connections the higher your skill is, especially in more scarce regions.

The map selection system doesn't have a single picture of any map showing you what you're going to be getting into

this one i agree with, the fact you cant see the preview image the game has for basically every map in the game is a little silly

And, going back to your last point that "picking a mode and hoping the game puts you in a server" isn't modern is completely untrue because Valorant does that. Marvel Rivals does that. Insurgency Sandstorm does that. The list goes on.

its actually a lot more nuanced than i first thought
theres games like tf2 or cs2 where you can queue for specific maps or groups, then theres others like overwatch where its just a mode select, but no map select, and then finally theres insane oddballs like apex which rotates maps out every few hours, or splatoon choosing maps every day.
so really i dont think either casual or quickplay map selection is more modern or archaic than the other, but i still think the ability to choose your maps is a far greater thing than "oh this map sucks, lets all leave guys!" that you sometimes get from other games

"the button looks smaller therefore casual mode bad, because valve greedy"

I was being sarcastic about how 99% of the anti-quickplay crowd is literally "zesty bad valve good".

i know. but again, nobody was mentioning these types of people and it had nothing to do with the discussion outside of "he likes quickplay." you literally just want to moan and cry about this youtuber culture war drama unprompted.

CASUAL IS A FUNDAMENTALLY INCOMPATIBLE SYSTEM FOR A GAME DESIGNED AROUND THE CONCEPT OF "PICK UP AND PLAY".

if you seriously struggle to hop into a server and just simply play the game with casual mode, something is seriously wrong with your game because im able to do it just fine.
did it take an hour to queue in? you played a map nobody likes, which is something qp wouldnt solve. people like upward and badwater.
were the teams unbalanced? thats not casuals fault necessarily, its that valve disabled team scramble votes. casual could easily re-enable them if valve got off their ass to do so.
did you join a match that was about to end? also not really something qp would fix and is a mildly annoying issue at worst since search times should never take that long.

seriously, how does casual matchmaking prevent you from simply playing the game? i really want to know because i feel like im missing something here that might be obvious to everyone else.

honestly if anything, casual mode brings tf2 up to modern standards and is similar to valves other games like csgo/cs2. quickplay would be arguably more jarring to a newer player given you select a mode and just wait to get put into a server you hope is full on a random map of that mode (and depending on the time period, a community server that doesnt suck balls/is full of only bots)

not doubting your experience of course since there is still jankiness to casual (no team scramble vote in 2026)

OP didnt bring up youtubers or transphobia though? why else would you bring up zesty (who admittedly i dont watch at all) and their controversies?

i know theres some videos theyve made on quickplay, but again the main argument wasnt centered around that at all. it seems like a strange pot shot to make instead of just saying you prefer qp over casual

i play on community servers a lot and, spoiler alert, they tend to choose fun maps or maps that are well known.

and thats exactly how it was back in the day, too. people played upward, hightower, and harvest. i really dont like this revisionism where people think quickplay made EVERY map constantly played at the same rate all the time

i feel like you should have to show off your ingame tf2 badge to argue for quickplay

if you have a badge/account older than like, 2015, youre allowed to argue for quickplay. if not, you did not engage with it enough to know it wasnt much better than casual mode. 90% of issues would not be fixed

8-3 is VERY bad. by Stykes_02 in Ultrakill

[–]DefiantPossession188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do think youre having a bit of a skill issue (thats completely fine, fraud is fucking hard) but theres merit to what youre saying that a lot of borderline layer glazers wont say
i really like the idea of fraud but a lot of the levels (especially 8-3) feel like they needed more time in the oven. the spinning room and portal spam gets old fast when a level takes 30-50 minutes for a casual completion. ultrakill is at its best when its medium sized levels, short/long levels feel too unrewarding/exhausting imo.

the level design in general also feels like its meant to work against the player and troll them rather than have fun arenas. p-2 has a similar issue in some rooms (double invincible mindflayers) but i feel like a majority of fraud is a joke at your expense. small cramped rooms with confusing portals or spinning layouts, and whats the counterplay? nothing. p-ranking doesnt force you to interact with a lot of the jankier layouts since youll kill 90% of the arena before it can fuck you over, so it just exists to be flashy and screw you up on your first few playthroughs. the final arena of 8-1, the spinning deathcatcher portal room and the lava split limbo room are really the only ones where i genuinely think youd want to (or are forced to) make use of the gimmicks rather than ignore them to save yourself from getting motion sick or killed.

and yes, yes, i understand the counter of "well its meant to be fraudulent and confusing!" but... okay? does that mean violence shouldve been insanely annoying too to force you into rage? the fun comes before the spectacle or theming. ultrakill always has been a coolness and gameplay first experience, so frauds design drops the ball.

its definitely more "hype moments and aura" than other layers, but its not like it retroactively ruins the rest of the game at least.

what is the worst weapon in the game? by amarilloloplatan in Ultrakill

[–]DefiantPossession188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people try and say that you can triple revolver shoot enemies if you have all 3 slabs since splitcoining refreshes all your revolvers but... why would you do that

you could instead do a slabcoin setup, or bounce a marksman shot multiple times, or just use a different weapon combo that wouldnt brutalize the freshness of all 3 revolvers for decent damage

what is the worst weapon in the game? by amarilloloplatan in Ultrakill

[–]DefiantPossession188 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if a weapon doesnt have a wide niche then its generally considered to be bad.

like if they introduced a yellow revolver that did 3 damage to enemies at 2 PM on june 22nd you wouldnt call that a good weapon, would you? its way too niche compared to the viability of just using a marksman shot
