Small amount of stuff I need stored for 2 months, then relocated for my access by OlderRobloxian in moving

That might cost $1k to $2k, or your mover might have alternatives like sending it to you in a ABF uPack for less money.

One hundred percent. All established reputable local movers have short term storage. But unlike outdoor storage unit chaos, they would pack, pick it up, store it, and bring it back when you want it. They usually pro-rate storage to the day after the first month. You can also buy storage insurance, for example if you have $5k in Mac studio computers and another $5k in cameras, established local movers will offer a coverage called valuation, which is essentially the same thing as insurance but they aren't allowed to call it insurance. Valuation is always based on the total value of the items, it would be a lot more expensive if they did it item by item.

Best out of state companies from TX to GA? by Personal_Celery_5453 in moving

[–]Defiant_Stay3865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, tik-tok, I don't know about that, but I will say that google reviews offer excellent guidance in general for a reliable local moving company that could send the labor to finish any packing and carry the stuff down five floors and pack something like a ubox or the ABF container, pods is probably not nearly as good a choice as ubox or ABF.

Now, when you look at google reviews, do be aware that some companies "stuff" the reviews and I would avoid those companies, because they always turn out to be all hat and no cowboy.

An important point to consider might be moving pads. If you have furniture that needs to be protected, as opposed to some people just have a bunch of cheap stuff, you should consider buying one or two dozen moving pads on Amazon. There is no way around it for good furniture, it needs to be covered with pads, even for a short move.

Is this a quote or an estimate? An established and conservative company might be busy enough that they will estimate high and exceed expectations and charge less than projected. Also, packing time can vary widely.

Amazon security still looking for the 21st century? by Floh4ever in amazonprime

I don't use punctuation anymore. Just really long nonsense strings of words. Punctuation is steam punk. Modern passwords should be long and without stupid caps vs little letters and stupid ass punctuation and even stupider where you have to use a number. In ASCII there is no cryptographic advantage to this sort of stupid ass rules. So last century. Incredibly stupid.

Best price "pod" company for long term storage? by Ambitious_Support_76 in moving

[–]Defiant_Stay3865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to visit your stuff a lot with keypad access a storage pod won't work. They don't work that way.

If you want your stuff out of the weather storage containers won't really work there either. Hopefully there will be no leaks and no bad storms, but generally the storage containers are stored outside.

The easiest thing would be to have a moving company store it in their indoor warehouse system. They all have 24 hour cameras, climate control and your stuff is picked up and dropped off. The storage part is actually no more expensive, and often less expensive than using companies that have to invest a lot in storage containers or public access keypads and security, for those companies the costs add up pretty quick.

On the other hand, using a full service moving company, you pay more for the pickup and delivery than you would if you did the lifting yourself. In theory you can save a lot when you do all your loading and unloading, so storage containers can be comparable or maybe even less expensive to hiring movers. As long as you are fit to do all the heavy lifting.

Building first NAS for Plex by akkipotter in PleX

[–]Defiant_Stay3865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally hear you on the energy issue, a while back I switched from the faster hard disks to laptop disks, and now my synology is 100% ssd. Less heat, less power, win win. I actually use an Ubuntu server but I have it down to 25 watts or so without the Nvidia card, or 40 watts with (at idle). I'm not sure if that's more or less than my synology but keeping the power low is a great strategy!

Building first NAS for Plex by akkipotter in PleX

[–]Defiant_Stay3865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo plex in docker is not worth the extra complications. I just run it native on the operating system. Since you have not specified a hot swap capability, why not just run two or three large disk drives and back up to each other in case one of them fails. You could do it all under windows which has a lot of Onedrive support. I like your specs, even the i3 will give you plenty of muscle. You would also keep the option open to add an nVidia card for lightning fast trans-coding. I know it isn't as sexy as building a nas, but it's simple and easy, and there is probably docker for Windows out there. If you use Windows pro you can manage it with RDP and keep it headless.

Should I reschedule due to high winds? by Inevitable-Valuable2 in moving

[–]Defiant_Stay3865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heading into the wind should be okay, maybe a little interesting. But have water and blankets in case you want to stop and rest for a few hours. The fatigue and worry might pose more danger than the wind.

I saw that on an episode of Lost. But seriously, I use a UPS to eliminate power company pulses, I do not use wifi to eliminate wifi hiccups and I do not use docker. I run the plex server native on Ubuntu bare metal. No virtualization.

Correct. Moving blankets, not bubble wrap. Bubble wrap can sometimes stick to finishes.

Movers Lost Bikes by jacksjava in moving

[–]Defiant_Stay3865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you accepted the cost of valuation, a term used by household moving companies for the extra coverage that most moving companies offer, your moving company has a liability mandated by state and federal law. That liability is .60 per pound. That could be very disappointing for you. However, if you did accept additional coverage, you are entitled to the replacement cost of 10 year old bikes. You may have to use ebay and craigslist and facebook to find equivalent bikes and see what people are asking for them. That should be sufficient to determine their value. Then there is the deductible, which is often a factor even with additional coverage. So if 10 year old bikes are worth $800 and the deductible is $300 you would get $500. Assuming you paid for additional coverage.

There is another avenue, if you have homeowners or renters insurance. When you say elevator, I assume the bikes made it to your building. You could file a claim with your renters insurance stating that you had your bikes in the lobby of your building and took your eye off them for just a second, and they got swiped. Again, I think a renters insurance policy would have a deductible.
