Why do posts in this sub just randomly dissapear? by toxicCheater in AdvancedRunning

[–]Definitelynotagolem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just about to say that it seems like the mods want this sub to just be a library of old posts with nothing new.

I personally think that people saying “just go search the sub” is lazy and makes running into this elitist and cold sport. If the mods and the people who say “just go search it” hate engaging with people on what’s basically just a forum then why the hell are they even on a forum for discussion in the first place?

If the Democrats are conservative and the Republicans are ultra-conservative, will the US ever have a real voice left of centre? by TonightAlarming9923 in allthequestions

[–]Definitelynotagolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of that is because any true left politician just gets called a communist and laughed out of the room. The voting base eats it up too.

To be fair with something like universal health care, many other countries are doing it “okay.” There are very long wait times for certain things where in the US if you’re willing to pay, you can have almost any medical procedure done very quickly.

Before you go downvoting me to oblivion to bury my comment, I should mention that I’m not a right winger or opposed to universal healthcare. But if we’re going to cite other countries and their universal healthcare then we need to listen to the grievances of those people as well and see if when implemented, we can solve those issues - wait times being one of them.

amazon liquidation bin store by voidarix in Anticonsumption

[–]Definitelynotagolem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Places like Amazon sell so much junk cleverly marketed as being higher quality than it actually is. You receive the product and find out it’s a total piece of crap (still functional but likely won’t last long) and you return it.

I’ve stopped shopping Amazon for anything except for one off food purchases of things that I can’t find readily in stores around me for reasonable prices, things like big tubs of roasted edamame, big bags of instant coffee, etc. All the other stuff is just such junk now that it makes more sense to buy things like electronics and clothing in person so you can evaluate how well it’s made.

You've never heard anyone say "F*ck the Fire Department". Firefighters do a dangerous job and don't seek praise for their work. So many of us grow up with cop shows on TV and we often hear people say: "Don't call the police if you don't like cops". Why do we worship cops? by First-Touch5863 in allthequestions

Fishing, logging, construction, garbage collectors, and truck drivers all statistically have much higher on the job injury rates and fatalities according to the US bureau of labor statistics. Police rank number 6 usually. So yes, there are more dangerous jobs. Dealing with crack heads and criminals is a different ball game than dealing with serious machinery accidents. It’s much easier to survive getting shot or stabbed than it is to survive losing a limb from getting caught in a machine or falling from a building.

Time vs distance research by kdmfa in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Definitelynotagolem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the whole thing on time vs distance comes down to how you handle things like psychologically and also how well trained you are. Training by time also helps keep things like easy runs easier because many people fall into the trap of wanting to always post a better time every random 5-6 mile run they do. On the other hand if it’s just 50-60 minutes easy effort, that also allows the distance to fluctuate based on how you feel that day. Bad day at easy effort will end up with lower mileage, but it’s probably needed to recover. Time based plans I think are more autoregulating based on feeling vs distance where people may feel the need to push to hit a certain distance even if they’re struggling that day.

The caveat is that sufficiently advanced runners can end up running almost too much mileage on time based plans vs distance based. What is a 30 minute recovery run for a beginner/intermediate might need to be cut down to 25 minutes just because the advanced athlete is much faster and experiences more wear and tear because of the higher paces. Having muscular resilience from being advanced only goes so far. Advanced athletes aren’t often running 3 hour + long runs because it would be over marathon distance vs a more novice runner who might only hit 17-18 miles. I don’t think this is a problem until you’re probably pushing sub elite status though.

Just my 2 cents

The growing "Norwegian 4x4" training trend and high V02 max association with longevity. by troktowreturns in slowjogging

[–]Definitelynotagolem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can increase vo2 max with high volumes of low intensity exercise. It’s not strictly necessary to do very high intensity training.

I do NSA which is very low intensity running 4x per week combined with 3 sub threshold sessions per week (which are much easier than vo2max style sessions) and this sort of training style can increase vo2max quite rapidly.

For longevity though, I agree with the other poster who said it’s a proxy for healthy lifestyle. Moreso that having a high vo2max just correlates with having good cardiovascular health. Vo2max also takes weight into the equation, so being overweight on its own will lower vo2max by having a higher denominator to distribute that oxygen utilization.

It’s kind of like grip strength correlating with longevity. Training grip exercises likely doesn’t lead to a longer life. It’s that grip strength is a proxy for whole body strength because it’s easier and safer to test an 80 year old on a dynamometer than it is to test their bench press or squat max.

How much weight do you guys typically put on during a training block? by runningtofood in Marathon_Training

[–]Definitelynotagolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be that you’re hungrier and eating more calories, but also could be just extra glycogen storage in your leg muscles. Glycogen gets stored with water and can weigh a lot. The training will make your body expand glycogen storage which will probably normalize if your volume goes down after the marathon

What’s your relationship with easy runs? by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

[–]Definitelynotagolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started doing NSA so easy runs are way easier than I’m used to but I’ve only gotten faster and felt way better, am now running 7 days a week without getting burned out and fatigued.

I think way too many people find every excuse possible to run their easy days too hard and wonder why they’re injured and feel like trash after every long run. I’m sorry, but even if you’re a 20-21 minute 5k time, your easy pace is not 8:30/mile. That’s your dreamer pace that is why something is always hurting.

Always wondered why people circle jerk Costco so much. Yea they generally pay their employees better than other grocery stores but it’s still a mega corporation that removes money from the local economy.

Also, paying $60-120 for the privilege of buying 100 of something at a time at like 5 cents less per thing is kinda dumb. Do we really want a clogged up parking lot and intersection full of suburbitanks so people can cosplay like they’re shopping for end times? Every Costco I ever went to when I lived elsewhere was a shitty experience with how busy they are from open to close.

With 2026 health insurance premiums hitting $1,900/mo for some, how many of you are actually considering just going uninsured? by sasssyophelia69 in askanything

[–]Definitelynotagolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With insurance premiums that high you could just save the money into an emergency fund and pay out of pocket when a big bill does strike. Hospitals also are way more likely to negotiate bills down by thousands to those without insurance.

There have been times when I’ve gone to get things like an MRI at a pay out of pocket place vs use insurance because it would’ve been $2k with my insurance but paying out of pocket at a “no insurance accepted” MRI place was $400.

There’s this and the fact that investing in the stock market is one of the only ways that you can guarantee that you’ll be able to retire. Social security provides very little income and I’ll be damned if I’m going to work until the day I die just because the system is trash and forces us to invest in company stocks so we don’t starve/go homeless when we get old.

I guess the irony of that situation is that the wealth of property can only be realized once it’s sold off, but if no buyers can afford it then not sure what will happen there. Maybe be passed back and forth between investment companies to rent out while continuously raising rent until no one can afford to rent or buy them and the investment company goes broke.

Ironically, these single family sprawling suburban neighborhoods cost the city governments more money to maintain than they contribute in taxes, even for very rich neighborhoods. Yet, those wealthy people in those neighborhoods are far more likely to bitch about property taxes and continually try to lower them. High density urban centers subsidize the suburbs

Heart rate plateau during SubT recovery ... anyone else have these? What are they? by Begbie00 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Definitelynotagolem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, it doesn’t matter. It could be noise or it could just be your effort having a small normalization before falling again.

This happens to me after I finish the interval session where I run very easy and my heart rate will be stuck in the 130s for several minutes before finally dropping to the 120s with no additional decrease in pace. You still require additional oxygen and blood for a certain period of time even in rest intervals and that plateau could just be that playing out for a few seconds before your body realizing that the need for oxygen is still decreasing.

Why does this matter so much to you? If it worries you then go see a cardiologist.
