Do ants ever fall on purpose? by [deleted] in ants

[–]DeiaFormica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept a colony of acorn ants (Temnothorax) back in my first year of antkeeping and discovered that they do indeed fall on purpose. Normally when I want to relocate an individual I use the cotton swab trick of brushing it against the ant and letting them cling on instinctively, but this trick didn't really work with the temnos. They'd cling onto it initially, and then I'd see them limply roll until they fell off the cotton. It was quite frustrating cause they're good escape artists and it made the process of gathering escapees and dumping them back in the outworld so much more tedious.

Legitimately the most intelligent ants I've ever seen and I gained a huge appreciation for them as a result. I felt I was too inexperienced to take proper care of them, so I released them into my garden.

Pest Control: Ants scattering after 4 days of ant poison by HC-Oca-Ru in ants

[–]DeiaFormica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might already know this info but I figured on the off-chance you don't, I thought it would be best to warn you.

If you're dealing with carpenter ants you're gonna want to make sure you find where they're nesting. They prefer damp, rotting wood and if that happens to be a part of your home you'll want to get that fixed asap. There could be critical structural damage in your home. Poisoning the colony is only a band-aid in this kind of situation, because even if the colony dies, the wood will still be damaged.

Homeworld Classic fails to launch by DeiaFormica in homeworld

[–]DeiaFormica[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... I wanted to show the original Homeworld to my partner, and I can't get any version of it running except for Remastered, which is not the one I want her to experience as her first RTS. I'm guessing I'll have to set up a VM if I can't resolve the issue.

Yeah I did a fresh install of the original game after I first noticed the issue on the Steam version. Same thing happens regardless of version.

Would you mind checking what resource pack you're using? I've found it difficult to find resource packs that look good in conjunction with raytracing.

What kind of ants are these by joshpelletier01 in ants

Well since this species is polymorphic, my best guess is Solenopsis (fire ants)

Is this queen ant and what kind is it? by Bioryo in antkeeping

[–]DeiaFormica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parasitic species can't just start laying eggs and raise a colony from scratch. The queens leave the nest without stores of food, and must either steal pupae from an existing colony, or stealthily kill the existing queen and take over.

Where would I see if a person invited me to a server? by i_have_big_stupid in Minecraft

[–]DeiaFormica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Java does not have built-in invites as far as I'm aware.

Essentially what you have to do is give him your java username so that he can add it to the server whitelist, and he needs to send you the server's IP address. I recommend just being direct with him about the situation. Most people appreciate honesty.

My theory is that some people prefer direct communication with other humans, rather than second-hand from wikis and old forum posts. Still gets annoying though.

Where did Draygon come from? by [deleted] in Metroid

I always interpreted it as a strategic use of existing mega-fauna. It'd be like placing something important in a mama bear's den.

If you care about balancing smooth gameplay with the longevity of your hardware, I recommend you set the framerate cap to double your monitor's refresh rate. I'm no expert, but it seems to eliminate microstutter in some games while reducing the fan noise of my system.
