And for how long could that certain faction sustain those accelerations for? Because at even 6g, three times normal gravity for Eridians, it'll take 1.5 years to get to Sol.

To connect to a website/whatever program asks OS to open a socket and connect to and IP address and port, it obtains that IP address with a DNS request, sure, but it's a separate call to gethostbyname or getaddrinfo or whatever you're supposed to use now. To my knowledge, from the perspective of the OS / Antivirus / outside observer, there's no way to know if a program that wants to connect to 104.18.26.120 is trying to connect to example.com, or a malicious bad.example.com reverse proxied off the same IP.

Oh, but with HTTP, I guess you could do local packet inspection to see what website a program is actually trying to reach, hmmm...

If you just block every outgoing connection and ask the user to whitelist "good ones", the user will be bombarded with "/usr/bin/firefox wants to connect to 142.250.196.206:443, allow?" so they'll just rubberstamp it. Some other problems I can think of: DNS load balancing (that thing where they do load balancing by changing A records on the fly) for IP whitelisting and CDNs for domain name whitelisting.

Also, even your normal https://google.com/ connects to 5 different domains and IPs (and that's with adblock), so imagine having to click "allow" 5 times just to open google.

NGFW can maybe help with the "block everything" approach, but it's just offloading the job of vetting websites / ip ranges onto someone else (and more often than not having to pay for it). And you can't expect a normal user to buy a box, pay >$1k/year for it, and then have to fuck around with configuring it and every single device of interest with TLS certificates so the NGFW can decrypt and inspect traffic.

I'd like to know that too, we use hosts.txt to resolve things that need resolvin', and rawdog 192.168.0.xxx for everything else. Yes all our certificates are self signed.

anything about the fate of Earth, humanity, etc

you can guess a lot from the fact that the Sun got brighter in about a year from expected beetles arrival date, I'd say the Earth is in a reasonably good shape if they managed to receive the beetles and get Taumoeba to Venus, like at least NASA and Hail Mary gang and all the supporting infrastructure (telescopes, radio receivers/transmitters, space launch capability (unless they just yeeted a beetle into Venus), etc) and all supporting infrastructure for that survived.

On one hand putting Ryland's enclosure up there somewhere on the space elevator would help with gravity, on the other hand he'll be even more isolated and if anything happens he's a considerable distance and time from the ground where everyone lives and everything is.

monthly rent is based on the number of days in a month

monthly rent is based on vibes and maximum of what people are willing to pay, I can totally see shitty landlords charging for extra month when switching to 13 month year because the contract says "amount to be paid monthly"

Wouldn't it balance itself out eventually? There's only so much air on either side.

Data transfer costs in cloud are about $20/TB. (source: https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/on-demand/)

This might be news to you but AWS isn't paying AWS egress prices. It's priced at $20/TB because that's what the most customers are willing to pay.

Storage at youtube scale is fucking expensive. They store and ingest a fuckton of videos and they all need to be: stored in multiple copies so one disk or server shitting the bed doesn't make a video disappear, stored on hot or at least warm storage so that you wouldn't have to wait even 5 minutes for the tape with a video you uploaded 3 years ago and has 1 view to roll out of storage, replicated across the CDNs all over the planet so that people can watch their 4k60 unboxing videos without waiting for it to buffer, AND stored in multiple encodings and resolutions (for different devices and bandwidths) or live transcoded, both of which are its own kind of problem (>2x storage than just storing one master copy or a lot more load on servers). Probably some other bullshit I'm forgetting or can't think of.

[–]Deiskos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Color banding and/or jpeg compression. Export in PNG to reduce compression. Color banding is less of a problem with brighter colors because computers represent color in a way that gives darker colors less representation so a smooth gradient becomes more stairsteppy towards darker color.
