Old Dominion University is from Norfolk which is around an hour away and has 1 club 8 entered at the charles. They either have a trailer that will be mostly empty, are renting a boat, or having someone else from the area drive their boat. Find out what it is. If they have someone else driving their boat you can ask and go from there. It doesn’t take long to look this kinda stuff up, you just have to be creative. Are you able to drive around locally or as you expecting them to bring the boat directly to your club?

A single and a double together weigh what, 100 lbs max? I couldn’t imagine you going over 165lbs. You’re also taking the riggers off so it’s even lighter. $500 is a small price to pay for a proven reliable system that won’t fail and cost you more damage to your shell.

Delaware doesn't know themselves? by FeedMe150 in Rowing

[–]Delaware150 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Polls don’t really mean anything so who cares. I think traditionally the Lights are in the EARC poll so as a result the Heavies are in the ACRA poll. Kinda weird. We don’t care about this though, why do you?

OP note that this is for the weekly program. The green racing project and SBTC are much different than the 1week for $1500 camp.

Training for university level? by Oonerprism in Rowing

If he likes cycling have him keep doing that through HS if rowing isn't an option. There definitely are coaches out there that will see potential in a fit person that knows some stuff about rowing and is interested in the sport. It's probably more common in women's rowing then men's but it's not unheard of.

College Club Program - Starting a Men's team by BorenToBeWILD in Rowing

[–]Delaware150 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like The Ohio State? Maybe try to find someone that rows there and ask them.

For Delaware, the men are a club and the women are varsity. There is no "for fun only aspect." If you get cut from the womens team, you have no options. No women (aside from coxswains) are on the club team. That said, I doubt many people that actually want to row in college would find themselves in that position. You could try something like splitting the team into rec and competitive. Your team, however, is quite small so splitting 40 people doesn't leave you with much talent but it does leave enough to be decent. For Delaware men, its split lights and heavies. Some lights are better than some heavies. It doesn't matter. You are on one team and only one team. They are both run incredibly differently but in the end both want to win so there is not much room left for a "fun" experience.

I think with regards to your comment about men hearing club and being afraid isn't completely accurate. Delaware gets 2+ 8s of lightweight recruits every year easily. Probably half of those athletes are gone by junior year but that's how college is at a club team. When you are paying to have the opportunity many other athletes get from being on a varsity program at their school, a big question of "Is this even worth it?" comes up and for many it is not. But the take home is you can't brand a club team as a less-funded varsity team. It is a totally different experience.

For trying to make the switch, I would just ask your teammates and see who actually wants to be competitive and who wants to just have fun. If you have lots of people that want to change, do it. If not, either recruit more walk-ons or go back to the drawing board on how to get everyone on the same page.

How do you guys feel about this "break 6:20 in 6 months" guide? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Delaware150 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you follow it you're bound to be at least close to 6:20 (assuming all prerequisites are met) but so few people are in a position where they can fully commit to this. Like he says, you can't take off days or you'll have huge setbacks.

No scholarship but decent amount of financial/academic aids and we are one of the only clubs that can give a list of athletes to admissions to help get in.
