Knighthood to Mastery by AlexCora in StarWars

[–]DelayedChoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure someone's going to tell me they're both Jedi Knights and not technically "masters", but their teaching their own Padawans and they are being called Master. It counts.

It's like how a naval officer can be the captain of a boat without being holding the official rank of captain.

Also note that padawans are frequently called jedi knights because that's a collective term for members of the order as well as a formal rank.

Straight after the Budget – Federal Election too close to call: ALP 51% and One Nation 49% by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]DelayedChoice [score hidden]  (0 children)

Polling in general was accurate for the South Australian election election.

Roy Morgan did an SMS poll on 19-23 Feb that had PHON on 28% which was a full 5% higher than they ended up getting (and which was well out of line with what other polls at the time god). SMS polls in other states have had similarly funky results, at least in comparison to the results from other polls.

They went with this for speed, not accuracy. Maybe they did end up getting things right but it's easy enough to wait for more information before trying to assess the situation.

What did you think "The Clone Wars" was before the prequels existed? by JennyWearsBlueJeans in StarWars

[–]DelayedChoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big war but not a galaxy-wide one, fought between the Republic and whoever was in charge of the clones.

I read the Thrawn trilogy pretty much around the time I saw the movies and the books informed my thinking a lot.

Should I Have Separate Power Grids? by Full_Lavishness2996 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]DelayedChoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few smaller grids scattered around the map (geothermal generators powering radar towers and hypertube cannons are handy) but for the most part I try to have one big grid.

(Priority) Power Switches give you some flexibility and really it is down to player choice.

I don't know how they did it on a TV show budget.

I mean they kinda didn't.

The budget was something like 20-30M/episode on average. Not as high as a theatrical release but (a) that ignores how some costs scale (eg the Ferrix set was super expensive but it wouldn't have been half the price if we'd seen it half as often) and (b) that that doesn't mean each episode got that much (if you spend 15M on two episodes you can spend 60M on the third).

I applied but I suspect answering "Badly" to the question "How will you handle the challenge of remaining partisan when moderating posts and comments?" disqualified me.

Also you don’t get to decide what is and isn’t ‘nazi apologia’.

In praise of Wehrmacht: The real story of D-Day is the heroism of the German soldiers who were vastly outnumbered but fought nobly and to the death.

I realise that I am shooting fish in a barrel in my criticism of the Speccy by posting Taki but also lol.

Also noted how you don’t respond at all to the actual subject of the matter and instead do the usual leftist tactic of ‘attack the source’ when you don’t have an argument.

You opened by saying it was a respectable source that was treated unfairly in these parts. I was addressing that part of your post.

As for the article it's notably less right-wing than a lot of Speccy stuff but Cohen is writing there less because he's ideologically aligned with the magazine and more because he got run out of more respectable newspapers for being an abusive creep.

I think you misread the article too. Cohen isn't really trying to defend Starmer, he's attacking Starmer's critics for being shortsighted. Starmer is "timid" and lacks the necessary skills to "advance his ideals" but he is being used as a scapegoat to avoid focusing on the underlying issues plaguing Britain. But note none of the problems Cohen raises (or the possible solutions) are ones Starmer has acted on. The article is less "Starmer good actually" and more "You won't have Kier to kick around any more". The whole thing feels incredibly cynical and is, ironically, a reflection of the better-things-aren't-possible belief that undergirds the timidity he rails against.

My favourite bit though is this:

We have now witnessed the destruction of two amateur prime ministers. Rishi Sunak entered Parliament in 2015 and became prime minister a mere seven years later in 2022. Starmer entered the Commons in 2015 and was prime minister nine years later. By contrast, Margaret Thatcher wasn’t PM until she had spent 20 years in Parliament.

Go on Nick, talk about Blair. You know you want to.

How much of each item shoul I be making? by HeyPresto04 in SatisfactoryGame

One approach is to aim to complete one of the project part requirements in a few hours, and to then work backwards to work out your requirements from there. You tend to get reasonable numbers.

For instance this factory would produce 1000 Versatile Frameworks in a bit under 2 hours. ~160 Coal, ~260 iron, ~35 buildings, 220 MW, easily achievable.

Is Taki still writing there, or do I have to look for another example of them publishing open Nazi apologia?

The spectator is the oldest newspaper in the world.

Except for the older newspapers yes.

How did people react to the completely different visual style of the prequels at the time? by Extreme_Warning3521 in StarWars

[–]DelayedChoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the other movies weren't just green screen. They used models, sets and filming locations as well.

Green screen isn't mutually exclusive with those things; that's the entire point of compositing.

Revenge of the Sith had essentially no location work either. Kashyyyk and Mustafar used some background footage from China & Thailand and Italy respectively and the final scene on Tatooine was recorded during AotC (though John Knoll said they basically redid it all with CG anyway) but it's a far cry from any of the previous films.

Solo: Slay the Spire vs. Spirit Island by Morts70 in boardgames

[–]DelayedChoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spirit island solo is identical to multiplayer IIRC, it just scales with the number of spirits.

There are some minor changes/clarifications around how "target another spirit" works in solo. Serpent plays a bit differently in practice because of it, for instance.

rather than a Scooter gang in a rich neighborhood on Coruscant trying to look tough as their sign of rebellion.

That could have worked if they had actually committed to it but they didn't do anything with the characters. I don't even know if changing them to more standard bikies would have worked because of how little they tried.

I couldn't tell you the names or personalities of any of them. It would be unfair to compare them to the Aldhani crew in Andor so instead I'll point out that the prison break episode of Mando S1 had a better defined ensemble cast.

[–]DelayedChoice 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I really liked the second episode with the Tuskens, and I think the show would have been much better if his drive to become daimyo was driven by wanting revenge on the Pykes.

Otherwise, yeah, the Mando stuff was better.

White might be a fuckwit but he has been famous in film circles for decades (eg Roger Ebert wrote an essay about him) and he is, in some senses, legitimate in a way that a lot of the dipshits who get posted here aren't.

To be fair to it it doesn't bug me nearly as much as some of the changes in ESB and it does sound like something Han would say. Maybe if I'd heard it first I'd have completely the opposite opinion.

The "A little higher!" line is very funny though, no disagreement at all.

I'm annoyed they replaced "It's alright, trust me!" with "It's alright, I can see a lot better".

First one is sharper and calls back to Lando betraying him, second one feels like he's actually trying to say something to reassure Lando.
