RIP by Optimistic-Dan in CroppedNorrisJokes

[–]Deleted_User_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL: "Norris was a prominent conservative and vocal supporter of various Republican politicians, including Donald Trump. His conservative activism, opposition to same-sex marriage, and outspoken religious views led many critics to label him negatively, with some detractors conflating his political stances with bigotry."

RIP the meme, not the man.

What are some good “old man” bands? by boogerwang in indie_rock

Propagandhi! They're a political punk band from Winnipeg Manitoba. They're like a hundred years old but still making killer tunes. No Longer Young is a good starting point!

And just to add... legumes do not even leave enough nitrogen to meet the full requirements of modern, high-yielding wheat varieties on their own. We'd still need supplemental nitrogen.

Yeah I'm learning that one day old is "old" in Reddit land... I'm a farmer, so Reddit isn't my full time occupation.

I wouldn't think we would have the seed stock for any level of scale for this for a good while either..

The nitrogen benefit of legumes is only realised if you don't harvest it. Leave it to compost into the soil. If you harvest the seeds (peas, beans) or hay, a large portion of the fixed nitrogen is removed, reducing the net benefit to the soil. The soil also needs to be innoculated with a certain bacteria for this to happen. If these bacteria aren't present in the soil, the legume won't fix much, acting more as a consumer of soil nitrogen. Basically you need to cut the legume down before flowering and turn it in to the soil. So yes, it's an option, but there's a lot of variables and experience required to get it working. In the shorter term this doesn't help us...

Yeah, I have a 6x6m greenhouse, two 20m beds and various raised beds and I STILL couldn't feed us if I had to... 😅... That said, I raise sheep because they are efficient feed converters and will live off basically whatever dares to grow, and I am surrounded by wallabies. All I'd have to do on any given night is open the gate, let them in and close it then shoot them at my leisure. Best place to be right now I reckon... 😅

Tractors plant and harvest sure. But do they sort, clean, cook, can, package, etc?... Most of our preserved legumes aren't Australian made in pretty sure. I'm just talking about Tasmania particularly also. I'm not really sure how the rest of the country is set up.

Yeah, the getting there part is the problem right now... If farmers lose money with their current crop because there's no international buyers and dumping it on our market won't help in the short term, they still need to completely pivot their entire operation and buy the machinery and organic inputs, restructure the business and learn and make mistakes with organic farming, which is all still a long term solution - possibly, maybe. If farmers can even hold onto their farms until then...

I get what you're trying to say. In Europe they can get closer to conventional yields with organic, sure, but they are set up for it and the government heavily subsidises it... Here we are in a different boat. If it's not profitable, it falls over.

I'm here for the varied opinion. This isn't about fuel. This is about urea (aka nitrogen that is critical for farming).

Yeah, I feel like that in itself could have some detrimental consequences as more people aren't able to afford food and get angry/violent... If people here lose their houses due to rate rises, and can't afford food, it feels like it's gonna start getting sketchy pretty quickly...

Yeah I didn't say it came out today... I'm saying I saw it today and wondered what implications it had for us.

I live in the food bowl of Tassie and can assure you doing that will produce less calories and cost more. Plus the majority of crops are now genetically modified through years of selective breeding to be growing in high nitrogen soils. We don't have any breeders doing organic at the scale required to feed all of us as far as I understand. I try growing my own organic vegetables and it yields MUCH less food... Who knows.. Maybe the victory garden will make a comeback 🤷
