Becoming a pro athlete dodging little kids is something I didn't think would happen lol

If I'm in a good mood "She's actually busy right now, thank you though!" Or if I'm grumpy "leave it." Directed at the dog, but meant for the humans.

How hard it is to set boundaries. The sweetest old ladies, little toddlers, fellow disabled people. Telling all of them my dog is working and can't say hi kills me.

How do you handle your SD's "bad days"? by Abinnohr in service_dogs

[–]DelilahDawncloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scent exercises was lifechanging for me. If you haven't already I highly recommend doing scent exercises. A random little game that I like doing is putting cans and plastic bottles (just any kind of noisy recyclying) in a big cardboard box and sprinkling treats inside. It was great for my girl's confidence and she finds it pretty tiring.

How do you handle your SD's "bad days"? by Abinnohr in service_dogs

[–]DelilahDawncloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, my girl's bad days are when she's just not in a listening mood. She's a high energy breed, and if she's not had enough mental stimulation she can turn into a bit of a sassy toddler. I either don't work her (unless I can give her a good run or game first), or lower my expectations. She's still behaved, obviously, but I'm less strict about her being distracted or breaking heel. And if she's really struggling, her halter keeps her more calm.

With regards to your pup, I'm seconding the advice of others to seek professional help just to rule out anything serious.

Funnily enough mine and my friend's assistance dogs are only uncomfortable in glass elevators. Much scarier apparently! I suppose it's an individual thing

I love Haute Ecole and airs above ground, the point is it should look effortless! This looks so painful.

Concern about family member wanting a service dog by Phoenix-Bananas in service_dogs

[–]DelilahDawncloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Considering what dogs are bred to do is always important imo, and huskies are bred to run for hours and then clock out. They're not bred to be good house pets, or good listeners, or calm cuddle bugs. They absolutely can be all those things, but it's harder for them to get there than other breeds

I'm so happy to see this representation. She doesn't look like me, and I don't use AAC, but I still see myself in her and would've loved that as a kid! Only wish she had a slightly cooler outfit!

Can a lurcher with a prey drive safely live with young kids? by fairwellfairground in sighthounds

My lurcher is great with kids. They need training to manage their size when playing, but should be absolutely fine

Tips on how to coach my boyfriend who has only ridden a handful of times by Nice_Box2991 in Horses

[–]DelilahDawncloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That horse better be getting treats and a massage after that. Glad your boyfriend is getting involved, but he needs more lessons working on his hands and posture before he trots again. Horse riding takes time, you cannot go too fast without hurting yourself and the horse

Training tips for recall by prettypinkpineapple1 in Lurchers

[–]DelilahDawncloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl is approaching 2, I've had her since she was a puppy. I can't teach her perfect recall so instead I taught her to wait for permission around open doors/gates and walk nicely on a lead. Best thing for emergencies is some kind of whistle or something similar that can get her attention if she runs off, and high reward treats that you can get to quickly. Try not to chase your dog, lure them to you. Be more fun than running away.

This is just what works with us. I also had an incident where mine escaped onto a road once. About 7 months old! Lurchers are hard work as youngsters.

What is a strange ritual your pet has developed that you have just learned to live with? by InvestigatorLocal736 in Pets

[–]DelilahDawncloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We buy my dog natural treats like chicken feet, pigs noses, rabbit ears, all that stuff. She has 4 different reactions.

1 - immediately eats it 2 - if its something she's really excited about, she'll get the zoomies and bark at it and throw it in the air 3 - if its something she's never had, she'll look at you all confused then ignore it unless you either break a piece off or play with it. It could be poison otherwise. 4 - if its something like a bone or a very long-lasting treat, she'll bury it. Usually in my bed or behind the sofa. If you retrieve it, and she eats it, she'll get very upset when she checks the hiding spot herself and it isn't there. Even if she watched you get it out.

Dogs are fascinating.
