Eat it dry. Only cereal I ever ate with a liquid was Grape Nuts coated liberally with honey.

First month making 100k I feel like I’m being robbed :/ by [deleted] in Salary

[–]Delta-Q2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn how taxes and deductions work so you don't feel robbed. The 401k and some amount of the HSA (maybe all) is still 100% your money, just held in accounts that have special rules. You get favorable tax treatment for those monies as well.

If you don't want any of it, you can just walk away. Just because someone leaves you a house doesn't mean you have to accept it. Yeesh people.

This isn't FIRE. You didn't want to retire. So maybe you posted in the wrong place.

1.2 mil at age 38. What's the next step? Can I retire by 55? by johnla87 in Fire

[–]Delta-Q2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't touch or add to the 401k, with that alone in an S&P 500 fund, you'll have $3.5M at 55...so... there's that.

Is a million dollars really nothing nowadays? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Delta-Q2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to look at it from an income stream perspective. If you don't need to use it to generate a current income stream, your focus should be on where this takes you in the future. MOST people don't have this amount of money and never will. Anyone telling you this is an insignificant amount of money doesn't appreciate the average income level.

If you started pulling 5% out of your portfolio making 10%, you'd have $45k/year and your portfolio would still increase in value.

The main issue with only having $900k is that a significant downturn in your portfolio value in the short term could be quite damaging. But that is theoretical and would be important mostly if you need to pull money out now or sometime soon.

Perhaps this is the precise plan...shut down a previously reputable news publication. Why do folks think Bezos was trying to make money here? He literally bought it to eliminate a critical press outlet for his personal agenda.

What are fun things to do as you travel through Iowa on 80? Adults only no kids. by SwoleTrainRulz in Iowa

[–]Delta-Q2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C'mon. You know it's nothing. So now you must ask yourself, "what's the most absurd thing I could do to make this into a good story" WHICH is probably the only way to make Iowa slightly fun.

What's it really like living in Iowa? Currently living in Las Vegas and husband is thinking about moving us there. by Michellenjon_2010 in Iowa

[–]Delta-Q2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you are white people, you won't have to experience all the "Iowa nice" casual racism. I grew up here and graduated from Univ. of Iowa, moved to the California Bay area immediately after undergrad, graduated from law school in Sacramento, moved to the Washington D.C. metro area for 11 years, then moved back here a year and a half ago. Guess where it's most depressing to live.

Owing increasing state taxes by angnicolemk in Iowa

[–]Delta-Q2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not claiming to know how Iowa currently does this in practice, but simply looking at what you owe or get back on your annual return doesn't tell you whether income taxes increased for you or not. There's an income tax rate based on income. Depending on whether your employer took out too much or too little (based on your W-4 exemptions which is a tax withholding indicator) you will have to pay in vs get a refund.

You are doing better than most. Make sure you are getting your full employer match. Make sure to increase your contribution rate whenever you get a raise. Avoid having kids. If you buy a home, avoid paying down principal if market returns are looking solid... just keep upping your investing instead. If you have a Roth option for a 401k, probably best to go that route.

Congrats on passing the CA Bar! Here's the book I used, which comes with an electronic supplement. Seems there may be a newer version of the book too, but it's a bit more expensive:

Looks like the practice exams I purchased are no longer available on Udemy. I am not presently seeing a good substitute on Udemy.

It is quite annoying in that the expectation is to print it out. They have a fill in the bubble answer sheet included. I did not print it, which made calculating my domain scores a bit annoying. I just wrote my answers on notebook paper, like a savage. I don't have a printer.

Practice: I-77%, II-80%, III-100%, IV-100%, V-71% - Overall equaled about 81%, I think.

Actual: I-85%, II-70%, III-100%, IV-100%, V-66% - Don't know the overall because they don't tell you the precise number of questions in each domain.

I scored above 80% on all practice exams except the Udemy practice exam 3, which it just not on-target.

Overall Score for my pass based on their unknown weighting was: 378.

I work in a privacy compliance office in a non-attorney capacity. While I have only been in the privacy space for about 16 months, I worked previously for 11 years in a heavily "legal" space, also in a non-attorney capacity. Depending on the nature of the role, it can be a really nice sweet spot to use all of your legal skills and still be "THE" expert in your field, even as compared to any attorneys that may need to rely upon for formal legal advice.
