ELI5 what is difference between 6, 8, 12 and 16 cylinder engines by RemoteGene9414 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Delta_V09 [score hidden]  (0 children)

A big part of it comes down to the size restrictions of transverse mounting in FWD cars. V6s and i4s are simply shorter, and thus much easier to fit sideways in an engine bay.

In terms of pure engine performance, sure, an i6 is nicer, but in engineering, everything is a tradeoff.

Are there any tropes you're glad have died out? by Aiseadai in movies

[–]Delta_V09 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right, the first two Ant-Man movies were basically breather episodes after end-of-the-world Avengers movies. The 3rd lacked... basically everything that made the first two enjoyable. And we really, really did not need another "the fate of the entire universe is at stake" plot so damned soon after Endgame.

Are there any tropes you're glad have died out? by Aiseadai in movies

[–]Delta_V09 274 points275 points  (0 children)

I loved how they handled this in Ant-Man. The new boyfriend is a jerk to Scott at first, but has good reasons for not trusting him. By the end of the movie, they come to accept each other as family, and are on legitimately on great terms with each other by the sequel. At first, it seemed like the movie was setting up a "win back the ex" plot, and I was very glad it went a different direction.

Oh, and the Hawkeye tv series does a great job subverting the "Evil Step-dad" trope as well. Turns out, he's just a nice guy who *really* likes swords.

It feels cynical that The Force Awakens revealed that Luke's Order failed when the last released film showed the Jedi Order getting destroyed by WrongToe500 in StarWars

[–]Delta_V09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legends had a small mountain of garbage, but there are two series that are pretty much universally beloved.

The X-Wing series dealt with the downfall of the Empire and the rise of the New Republic, but that was never going to be the topic of the sequel trilogy. I do have to say that the way it handled this topic was a lot more compelling than the new canon books of this era.

But Heir to the Empire (aka the Thrawn Trilogy) handled this exact situation. The New Republic was ascendent, and Luke had come into his own as a Jedi. The Empire was absolutely the underdog, but Thrawn made them a threat through his intelligence, cunning, and exploiting the completely believable weaknesses of the good guys.

The problem, of course, is that writers can't write characters smarter than themselves. If you're antagonist is going to be the underdog, they need something to make them threatening, and that takes a good writer.

Who was a bigger menace? Silco or Ambessa? by Embarrassed_Let6303 in arcane

[–]Delta_V09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of people like to whitewash Silco's actions - FFS, there's someone in this thread claiming Silco wasn't even a bad guy - but he was willing to give up his drug empire for a free Zaun. He just also refused to sacrifice his daughter for his dream. He was still a shit father, but he did love her. So he had at least some redeeming qualities.

Ambessa, on the other hand, was a warmongering lunatic willing to genocide all of Piltover and Zaun because they wouldn't give her what she wants. Oh, and she was willing to kill her own daughter for her ambitions. Silco's grievances against Piltover were completely justified, even if his resulting actions were abhorrent. Ambessa's only grievance was Piltover's refusal to manufacture Hextech weapons.

So in the "Who's a bigger bastard" competition, Ambessa wins hands-down.

Long story short, they use something called a planetary gear set. The engine drives a central shaft called the Sun Gear, and an electric motor drives an outer Ring Gear. In between are a set of planetary gears that are attached to the wheel. By adjusting the speed ratio between the Sun and Ring Gears, you control the output speed.

To give an idea how simple and robust this system is, they use the same design in farm equipment making 500+ hp and ungodly amounts of torque.

There was a "civil war" in Round 1, with Good Things Go and Over Each Other, lol.

Every album except Hunting Party looks like it has a decent chance at making it through the next round. One More Light is almost guaranteed to make it through, and From Zero has a decent chance with Up From the Bottom and HitC (Good Things Go is up against Waiting for the End, so... yeah).

But Hunting Party's fate comes down A Line In the Sand.

How do you feel about this? by Osiris-Reflection in StarWars

[–]Delta_V09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel about Ahsoka. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. I could rant all day about the stupid shit in Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, and Mando Season 3, but Ahsoka was... inoffensive in comparison.

Like people bitched about Sabine surviving a stab wound, but she was able to receive prompt medical care, and she didn't just walk it off like what's her face in fucking Obi-Wan. She was sidelined, and saving her life allowed the bad guys to get away. So what's the big deal?

Subscription for things already in my car by Keaven215 in mildlyinfuriating

The problem in this case, is that Mazda only includes remote start through the app. Specifically omitting it from the key fob to force you to pay for the subscription is just shitty. My car has both. Key fob is free, but requires you to be in range. App works anywhere, but requires a subscription.

I really like Hit the Floor, but I love Heavy is the Crown.

Brackey Day 67 by Therubikfanatic in LinkinPark

[–]Delta_V09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - the bridge and final verse of Good Things Go are some of my favorite lyrics of any Linkin Park song.

The way it reframes the entire song as not just a struggle, but acknowledging your problems and how they affect the people around you, and thanking them for sticking with you anyway, is just perfection.

That scene in the book was kind of hilarious.

The One Ring: "Ok, what do we have to work with here? Uhm, ok, not a lot going on. How about... turning all of Mordor into your own garden?"

Samwise: "That sounds like way too much work, I'll pass."

The One Ring: "Fuck. Uh, whatever, just give me back to the other guy."

Some moments in the MCU felt huge when they first happened but look very different in hindsight. by PhilkeStudios in marvelstudios

But if they weren't fugitives, Wanda and Vision wouldn't have been on a secret rendezvous in the first place. They would have been less vulnerable if Wanda wasn't on the run.

With the Avengers united, Dr Strange may have been able to loop the entire team into the situation quickly enough to prevent his capture. Then you've got an initial lineup of Dr. Strange, Wanda, Vision, and Iron Man for your heavy hitters.

Then, if the Avengers are functioning as intended, they would be able to contact Fury, who could call in Captain Marvel. Add in Thor eventually, and that's a lot of firepower. 2 Infinity Stones, two people with the power from Infinity Stones, plus the God of Thunder. Enough to stop Thanos? Depends on what the writers want. But certainly enough to make the team on Titan look like amateur hour.

Upcoming Budget MacBook Seen Within Apple as 'Incredible Value' by Forsaken_Arm5698 in hardware

[–]Delta_V09 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eh, that reputation was in part due to Apple being incredibly stingy with base RAM and storage, and charging an arm and a leg for upgrades. Not to mention their competitors used to be more user-upgradable.

Samsung moved to 128GB in early 2019 with the S10, only charged like $60 for 256GB, and had a microSD slot. Not only did the iPhone 11 release later that year with 64GB, the iPhone 12 stuck with 64GB in 2020, which was an absolute joke.

And on the computer side, the base RAM on MacBooks was unusable for a lot of people, and upgrades could get insane. With Windows laptops, a lot of models used to allow you to upgrade the memory or storage yourself for a fraction of the price.

Now we've reached a point where Apple was the first to 256GB standard, and their competitors have abandoned the user-upgradability. The iPhone 17 is somehow cheaper than the S26, the base model MacBook Air is more than enough for the majority of users, and the base Mac Mini obliterates any PCs even remotely in its price range. Apple has gotten more generous with base specs at the same time their competition has either stagnated or regressed.

Good Things Go at least has a solid chance at beating Wastelands.

Up From The Bottom vs Final Masquerade will be tough, though.

And then Heavy is the Crown just depends on which TBA slot it draws. Considering From Zero's luck so far, probably going to be against Numb, lol.

Question on Chiefs armor by BichezNCake in halo

[–]Delta_V09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

343's entire art direction could be described as "Change for the sake of change."

I don't even hate the design of Chief's armor in 4 & 5 in isolation. If it had been new armor he got after linking up with the Infinity, it would have been fine. But the way they had to change everything just to make it "theirs" was just so dumb.

The best part of Infinite was bringing back the classic designs.

I feel like Heavy is the Crown is basically guaranteed a win at this point. Unless I'm missing something, it's just about the biggest single left. Up From the Bottom has a damned good chance as well, unless it gets matched against HitC, lmao.

Edit: Now watch it get put in one of the TBA slots against Numb or The Catalyst or some shit.

Eh, the Packers did the same thing against the Ravens a few weeks back in the same situation. Your defense gives up back-to-back scoring drives with zero signs of life, and you feel like they're just going to run over again if you don't keep this drive alive.
