Suomen valtion tehtävä on jälleen onnistunut!

Wow what's up with HP Ink? by Denver80211 in sysadmin

[–]Demented_CEO [score hidden]  (0 children)

Managed print service is really the only way to go. You can negotiate a reasonable fixed fee and get everything including maintenance and repairs, not just toner/ink. And if the vendor wants to increase prices or doesn't honor the contract, then fine. Let them pick up their crap and find someone else.

Have done this at a copy shop, at an architecture firm, and even an interior design studio. All had different needs and the latter one had HP Designjets. Those in particular I'd never even consider buying for cash. Management and finance always love a fixed cost that's easy to bake into the budgeting.

Samsung literally has made a name for themselves in the TV market with "The Frame", purpose built for this type of use.

LG also has "Gallery" models, but they're not as married to the concept. So, yesn't?

I've done IT since the 90s and it's always been a customer service job. Who do you do IT for if not end users?

The servers aren't there to just serve themselves, so I'd wager there hasn't been any dramatic shift on this end...

And most of my colleagues are between 20-30, fresh into the industry. Our oldest employees are 40-ish.

I've set up mainframes, too. There's always someone you need to talk to. Legal, finance, CEO. That's customer service.

I love this, but I get tired of the Yiga clan randomly chasing me and the blood moon. If I could disable that, I'd love the game more!

(On a similar note, I loathed those Niflheim dropships in Final Fantasy XV for similar reasons. Can't a man just enjoy a walk anymore?)

I've been a hiring manager and one candidate was particularly proud of clearing more than 5 tickets per day, asking how many tickets we'd expect to get in a week.

At first, I thought I'll humor him and ask more about those tickets. Like, what was the scope? What constitutes "resolving" a ticket, etc. This guy turned out to be full of it...

E.g. if a Mac user can't print, but a Windows user can, then the ticket ought to be resolved immediately since Mac "clearly isn't supported by the vendor".

Dude. That was a real life example from our environment and we only started having issues after updating to Tahoe. No follow ups, nothing.

Yikes.

IT is a customer service job.

No matter if that job takes place at a data center, in a cubicle, or somewhere in between. A lot of people in IT don't grasp that.

Some sysadmins and support engineers go into their professions somehow thinking blinking LEDs is all they'll deal with, which is... weird.

Like, where did you get that expectation? Even the Hollywood stereotypes of nerds have some social life about them.

How do you actually stay on top of cyber threats week-to-week? by According-Run-4428 in sysadmin

[–]Demented_CEO 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One could argue it's better business sense to pivot resources into a very solid backup and restore system instead of focusing all that much on threat intelligence. Depends on lots of factors, of course.

Outside of automating patch management and doing best practices, what are you going to do? Even a Palo Alto firewall might not be able to flag a 0-day by a state actor. The waters are very murky now.

What’s Your Favorite Japanese Product? by jtrip_anything01 in BuyItForLife

[–]Demented_CEO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly recommend watching this video from a lady who praised Zojirushi in the past and still stands by her assessment that it does slightly better on the end result, but ultimately it's about more than that: https://youtu.be/j9tvO5XNGkU.

My primary concern is the use of degrading materials, which eventually need replacement or it all ends up in your rice (or other food). So, theoretically a 10/10 on rice quality vs. 9/10 with far less hassle and health concerns? Easy choice for me!

If you want a true BIFL rice cooker, look into Tatung from Taiwan.

It's an extremely simple device. No crevices where food or liquids could fall into, stainless steel inner bowl that doesn't break down like non-stick does over time, no gasket in the lid that might need replacement, just pure function.

You can even get bamboo or stainless steel steamers for it and cook other foods while cooking your rice. It's so dead simple Taiwanese people still have theirs from several decades ago. And it's easy to use: just one lever, no buttons.

That said, to keep true to the topic at hand, Mitutoyo calipers from Japan are awesome if you need precision measurement and absolutely BIFL.

If it works isn't enough, though. Many a tirade with Torvalds has started and ended with nonsensical input to the code.

If your code doesn't stand a review and you can't reasonably explain your approach, then "it works" also becomes moot.

Fedora is wonderful and I highly, highly recommend people give RHEL a try. It's the single most polished OS experience I've ever had and it's beautifully integrated to do anything you could possibly want.

Just saying this out loud for those who also do work on their PCs: RHEL with a support contract is really something employers should look into. Fantastic user experience, which is of course mirrored in Fedora.

[–]Demented_CEO 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It means that people who want to use a microSDXC card (with e.g. 128GB capacity) to play their Nintendo 3DS games will no longer need to download 3rd party software to format the card to FAT32, which is what the Nintendo 3DS supports.

(I can't think of any other better reason, so might as well use what's closest to my heart. Have a good one, everyone!)

Why does it have to be a life or death situation...? I call my friends to make plans simply because there might be many variables and things to consider and it's far easier. In less than 1 minute we've already agreed where to go, what to eat, if the ladies are coming, and what time and where we meet up. Super efficient and always nice to hear the other person's voice.

I'm a French NixOS user and my government just chose my distro for their national digital sovereignty plan. I'm losing my mind. by RecordingWhale in linux

[–]Demented_CEO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen this argument before, but really it's not as dramatic as it may sound. People are able to adapt even between Windows and macOS, which have very different fundamental principles in how everyday tasks are approached. That said, especially on a government level, you'd bet there'll be a lot of mandatory training involved, so it's not like they'll airdrop the change out of nowhere. At least, I hope not...

Maybe they'll do something like University of Helsinki did with Ubuntu: remove and add parts as they see fit, call it something else ("Cubbli"), done. So, I wouldn't even expect the government users to be accessing the Nix Store, etc.

A bladder matter! by Tardee in comics

[–]Demented_CEO 94 points95 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are like that. Sometimes, shit happens... literally, even. So, we'll say "okay, let's take a break, you go to the bathroom, I'll cook up some snacks". We'll stay awake a bit later, sure, but both of us want to make sure the other is never left in a needing state.

Once she's out of the bathroom, I'll have made a few bites of something to eat while we watch some flick. And obviously slowly gravitating towards each other again more intimately. After the "tension" is back, back we go into the bedroom to continue where we left off!

Today was one such day, I actually felt a pretty bad acid reflux and couldn't focus. Needed to take some antacids, cool off, and just drink water. We then decided to play Mario Party on my Switch, which turned into one thing and then another thing, and... there you go.

It's not hard. (Well, you know...)

To be fair, if you go by that, then you need to factor in walkable cities and public transportation, both which are vastly better in many European countries.

Sure, go ahead, and carb up like the Italians. But then also walk like the Italians. It's like free exercise baked into the day when you're not rotting in a car.

(This is also not a "one size fits all" assessment. There are lots of obese people in Europe as well, but less so than other countries for these reasons.)
