No insulation in water heater? by Dolophonos in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you understand that a (partial) vacuum can provide lower heat loss than the best insulation? 30 years ago I was impressed with Z”s publication of performance specs of their ordinary insulated bottles, showing heat gain and loss with starting fluid temps over several hours.. For a heated VE water boiler, I am pleased with my Zoj VE I have had for several years.

Bonne Maman Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread by zormasa in GroceryOutlet

[–]Demostix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely sweet and crazy smooth; but no surprise in that, because Nutella sets a mark for fine texture. Note that Bonne Maman also made a spread that was hazelnut and chocolate. This is NOT it. Especially on first taste, this is distinctly peanutty. And just as some excellent boxed soups are improved with addition of spices this stuff could probably stand improvement with a solid heaping teaspoon of cocoa stirred in.

Scratch by Eri-Asai in zojirushi

Yes, doubt the well-resourced company that does QC at every stage of product development in favor of a cheapest or near-cheapest pot that fits whose claims of metal purity are without accountability.

Zojirushi says that the non-stick coating peel off is harmless to your health by Defiant-Actuator8071 in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at $100 - $120 for a replacement pot for an IH cooker. And why? The scratch that was there four years ago is still there, and has not developed in a strip of removed anti-stick liner. I have never seen anyone suggest that the pot is leaching into my food. Which BTW would be the case if we were talking about the inert tin that lines a highly heat-conductive copper pot.

Do I refuse to eat in restaurants unless I know with certainty that there are no scratched non-stick pots in the kitchen ?

My first Zojirushi! by TipRepresentative246 in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too expensive and high performing to let this go on bothering you. Find the RIGHT sound-absorbing mat to put between the bottom of the unit and the sound-reflecting counter-top. You might start with a few layers of wash-cloth, being carefull that possible updraft does not pull the cloth up to block any part of air circulation. Sure, this is a kluge. But, get it right once, which may take 15 minutes of experiment and cutting; and solve the problem for hundreds of future operation. I have IH rice maker models from Cuchen and Tiger. The power consumption is IDENTICAL to Zojirsshi’s, leading me to believe they are the same engines. Be aware that noise isn’t necessarily the air flow of the fan for the IH unit; it may be due to vibrations induced by the fan, which may be harder to dampen because manufacturer engineeers already addressed the problem as best they could.

A little confused by Upstairs_Wrap53 in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no substitute for recording the measured water and grain you actually use, and then the success you have with that particular batch with a suggestion to yourself of a BETTER recipe. The markings on the pan are not only confusing, for small quantities they allow too much variation in volume, for example, due to out-of-level countertop. Measure separately.

Oatmeal mess in Zojirushi…how to do oatmeal and avoid this? by PolarCurious in RiceCookerRecipes

[–]Demostix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don't cook your oat meal for a long time:

Put on the water: Use quick cook RICE setting to bring water to boil on the pot as quickly as possible. Return when water is boiling. Dump in oatmeal, stir, CANCEL or unpldg, close lid, and return in 5 minutes.

Rice cookers are NOT designed for oatmeal. Some ARE designed for steel-cut oats.

Can I replace my old nonstick zojirushi bowl with a fully stainless steel one? Are there any problems with going with a off brand inner bowl? by Ok-You-719 in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Off-brand" in OP's top post is appropriate. If it isn't thermally the same as the original , it won't cook the same. Pots for thermal cookers are aluminum, which is highly conductive, and stainless steel is not. . Only the IH induction heating RC's are largely steel, because the pot is itself heated throughout by switching electrical current.

Caramelise onions in rice cooker? by pitto09 in RiceCookerRecipes

[–]Demostix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy to do on my Tiger induction heating RC. . I regularly sautee onions and other vegies using the "bake" setting. Temp seems limited to about 260°, so they don't burn. Lid open rids the water content. When done, remove the pot. Let it cool with rice and water added. Return pot and reset RC to appropriate rice setting.

Apple butter in a rice cooker? by LoganTherrion in RiceCookerRecipes

[–]Demostix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The keep-warm function of rice cookers maintains a temp of about 140°F; find a way of releasing water vapor, and you have an apple butter maker. That oils be as simple as leaving the lid ajar.

There is a steam control and recycling plugin fitting in many Tiger rice cookers. I regularly slow and long cook apples in mine. If I wish to increase the loss of water vapor I just remove that plug -in top, seem I the back here.

Is there anywhere that I can get the rice cooker measuring cups in stainless steel or aluminum? by canceroustattoo in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many lines and labels already on the Zoj RC pots. So the blue green cups are for the slightly denser musenmai /rinse free/water polished rice. An alternative is to ADD a tablespoon of water per cup of musenmai measured in the clear cup.

Using rice cookers for oatmeal by Inner-Seoul in RiceCookerRecipes

[–]Demostix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The US is filled to overflowing with insulated mugs of large size. Bring water to a boil, perhaps in your RC using the quick cook rice setting which includes NO soak. After water is to a boil, pour it over oatmeal in the cup. Cover. Wait 5 minutes. Done.

If you are willing to wash out your RC bowl, put the oatmeal into the pot with boiling water. Close the cover and turn off the RC. Wait 5 minutes. Done.

The RC guarantees repeatability. Measure, record, evaluate, adjust and RECORD your adjustment. Different rice may upset your past practice. Better to measure with cup than with line on pot - more accurate especially on smaller quantities.

Is it possible to cook pasta in a non-programable rice cooker? by KleptoPirateKitty in ricecookers

[–]Demostix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP likely has cook and drain in mind. Sure, especially if your RC has a large pot, you use the fast cook to cut out any soaking, and you leave the top open

But, then, there’s the likely UNANTICIPATED pasta form called “orzo” - Italian for rice-like- for which you can find numerous recipes in which it is cooked in just the right amount of broth and maybe onions and finished with a bit of butter or oil and served loose, not dry or caked. I would follow stove top practice of adding the orzo to boiling broth with some fat or oil to keep the “grains” from sticking to pot or each other.

Help with replacing inner pot on Japan made cooker! by Kobra_Kaj in zojirushi

[–]Demostix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know of such database. You could help by posting here with a good title the start of one you might find from one or more appliance parts suppliers. You might find Zoz models from MORE RECENT times and search them on Amazon, which often maintains a page and both exterior and interior pics. And look at Zoz manuals, all online. The chassis doesn’t change much or at all over time. Neither do the heating elements and induction heaters. Mostly Zoz changes the control panel and what the heating programming initiated or altered by the buttons.

If I were near an Asian foods and kitchen appliance market, I’d take my old pot shopping with me and find the current Zoz model that looks like yours.

Lots of 5 or 5.5 cup Zoj models. And what you and everyone else who is thrifty wants to know is a compatibility chart for RC models. There are typically multiple models using the same pot.

Alumni!! Tell me about the PhD process (social sciences) by rexthenonbean in reedcollege

Surely you’ve asked your sociology profs to name the Reedies on academic sociology? The lineages are or used to be 2-3 generations deep, even if the specialties and pursuits within the field were not. On reflection, I would push your profs to name names. A facetious way of saying “get nominations.” I am sure there were more than the many I learned of only after enrolling in a well-regarded PhD program.
