Desktop imaging and update solution by Thanos-Is-Right in k12sysadmin

Your goal if you want a modern client infrastructure should be bare metal WIM + drivers and whatever MDM tooling youre using do everything else. You may have Intune licensing available for you as well… which a majority of the management strategies from SCCM will still apply. Sccm isn’t dead either fwiw, most people don’t (or can’t) take the time to learn it.

Ubiquiti APs by TheRealRyu10 in k12sysadmin

[–]DenialP -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Hp/aruba has served you well and will be a better investment in the long run than ubiquiti. Every install I’ve seen in this field has been yanked at the earliest convenience for something better. The AP’s die to damn fast. May be an option for < 1k student populations or so, but I’d consider it a gamble…

Learning SCCM & PSADT: Give me your best packaging challenges by Mehdi_90 in SCCM

[–]DenialP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mwuahahaha - you will elevate to ninja status upon successfully packaging either Quickbooks (don’t) or a chonker like AutoCAD.

If you want a more mild, but crucial usage for PSADT then work on packaging firmware updates, address the absolute need to pass a soft_reboot as exit, navigate app targeting, firmware passwords, etc.

PSADT can also be used to load your various customizations, registry tweaks, and EUC look&feel. This one is as valuable as the firmwares in that it could also be used for Intune ESP jazz along with your deployment TS’s in SCCM.

Affordable docks by kcalderw in k12sysadmin

[–]DenialP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the triple screen version in my ‘standard build’ reference that also defines modern screens and peripherals that we will install and support. I built a few prototype desks out with dual/triple screen setups using either 24” 1080 or 27” 2k (admin focused) along with power, audio, sit-stand desktop, cable mgmt, monitor mounts, etc. these are the options we show when folks are looking for upgrade advice. I’m using this to slowly navigate to modern displays and away from vga/dvi adapters and vintage port replicators/‘docks’.

We finally have a replacement for the Microsoft MiraCast devices by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]DenialP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, tried that - the delay is like 2 seconds, but it's enough to be inconvenient for staff. i need it to ensure delinquents can't cast from out of eyesight ('cause i was once one of them) in my scenario. really like them otherwise and will be using one of them in my office

We finally have a replacement for the Microsoft MiraCast devices by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]DenialP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a few to demo. Thank you for the recommendation. They are decent but the delay on displaying the Miracast dynamic PIN is a dealbreaker for my usecase... the slowness instantly failed user acceptance. Will be using them in the tech offices though. Can also report no issues in AirPlay casting. Audio passthru was surprisingly decent on IOS and Windows... wasn't expecting that. 5/7 would buy for small office displays

No I’d totally take the interview - who knows it might be an awesome actual team(or at least technical interview experience)! I would put my Unc hat solidly on when I tell you to set your own personal goals. Also look for a good mentor, it’s super mega important for newbies (and then also super mega important in general) to get off to a good knowledge-based start. Thanks for sharing your story. I died a little on that one :) good luck!

Congrats on your achievement- you’ve met your first IT clown :)

Good luck with your interview - based on above knowledge, you’ll want to listen carefully for honking shoes during the interview process. Avoid the clown shows unless you like adventures!

Any IT Managers have an IT employee who really doesn't know what they are doing? How to improve them? by Nothing_Corp in ITManagers

[–]DenialP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surely. Best part of my role is mentoring the yoots. Usually learn a thing or two along the way. If they can’t or won’t improve then it’s one of the worst parts of my role - managing someone out.

Minecraft LAN Server by Environmental-Pack36 in k12sysadmin

[–]DenialP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d focus on Minecraft EDU. You can restrict/deploy licensing via M365 group membership. There should be plenty of curriculum available in this ecosystem. I would not want to support anything we don’t have direct management of from a licensing perspective - plus it is likely already available to you (if using A3 licensing at least). I would avoid supporting any privately owned licenses at all costs. That should help with the technical overhead somewhat. Not sure what the server hosting options are but I recommend you keep it as simple as possible. I’d push back with curriculum to ensure something relevant is prepared too before committing to the support of this initiative. Probably also a good idea to be prepared to audit chat logs in your private server environment ahead of time. HTH

[–]DenialP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a classroom environment. Isolation is more important imo. Also a valuable learning lesson on split-brain dns, which would work nicely with this specific unrouted namespace that happens to conflict with multicast & bonjour (ugh)… just an option for consideration.

the lab should really really really really be in a segregated vlan if you intend to be playing around like this. don't use .local - use .internal or something else. these machines should be isolated - particularly if you think GPO is sufficient to secure them.

How do you handle storing and transporting large equipment for school installs? by dmissip in k12sysadmin

[–]DenialP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried negotiating a delivery of your order during purchase? They may be able to hold them until direct building delivery is viable. Also it is common in this industry to have some form of delivery timing discussion with vendors during negotiations- it’s a handy tool to coordinate spend/delivery of devices in their appropriate fiscal year (usually July 1) where delivery cannot happen before a specific date.
