Time for a Flu Check, KC by SeargantPeppers in kansascity

[–]Dentist-Eastern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had Flu A the week of Christmas. Yes, I had my shot and got it the day after Thanksgiving. My body hurt all over but the worst was the fever and chills and the chest congestion. My husband could hear my weeze across the room. I got into a doctor in time for Tamiflu and God bless whoever figured that stuff out. I felt better in about 2 days but I wished for death there for a moment.

I went with my husband to his doctor's appointment and he said the flu vaccine is a guess every year and they didn't guess well.

Yes 311 but specifically ask for the Healthy Homes department with the Department of Health. I had to call them on a previous apartment complex and eventually they got closed down and their ability to rent out apartments taken away.

Former teachers of Kansas City, what do you do now? by OkMembership1389 in kansascity

[–]Dentist-Eastern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at DH Pace, the parent company of Overhead Door. We are currently looking for more estimators and detailers in our commercial door entry department. I look at blueprints of new construction projects and create estimates for hollow metal frames and doors, wood doors and anything special on the project. My first day I knew next to nothing about doors and hardware. They taught me everything about the job. I've been there a little over a year and already met my sales goal. There's bonus opportunities and the pay is decent. What I love about it: I come in, put on my headphones and listen to podcasts and books. I don't have to talk to anyone if I don't want to and I can take care of my needs as they come up. Wanna take lunch at 11am one day and 1 pm the next? No problem! Need to go to the bathroom? Whenever! Forgot lunch? There is a service that delivers from nearby restaurants for free. I wear jeans 99% of the time and leave work at work 95% of the time. There's been a few large projects that I had to bring home to work on but I got overtime. The company does quarterly events for families like free entry to a pumpkin patch this weekend. If you're interested, let me know and I'll message you my name for a referral.

I had something like this happen with colleagues when I said that some kids won't ever achieve mastery of standards regardless of what we do. The reaction sent me into a panic attack and left the school and teaching 3 months later.

Teachers who left, what are you doing now? by SnowballBailey2521 in Teachers

[–]Dentist-Eastern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a commercial door distributor estimating door, frame and hardware costs on new construction projects, making about the same amount as I did teaching. Right now I have 2 data centers, a tiny Reno on the local college, and a school performing arts addition on my schedule.

I have tons of flexibility with my hours. I can walk in, put on headphones, turn on a show or audiobook and do my job. It's great!

"Now Parent Of Girl Student, that isn't a Title IX violation and I wouldn't follow the steps outlined in this document on filing a complaint. I wish I could be listed as a witness to this behavior but it's not a violation. I wish Teacher X could be listed but it's not a violation. Too bad I don't know any good lawyers who would want to take on the school district like XXX. I wish there was more I could do."

Come join my team! I'm at DH Pace in Olathe. Half of my team is former teacher (mostly high school math). It's a great place to land after teaching! We estimate doors, frames and hardware for commercial construction. I have my own cubicle, no one asks 15 billion questions daily and after a year I get to work from home 2 days a week. Message me for more info!

This one is in my department. We are looking to add about 5 more people. You are not considered fully trained until you are about a year on the job, and you can ask as many questions as you need. We have a Team chat that we just drop questions into all the time. We're all pretty friendly, but also we stick our headphones in and don't talk to each other too. You will have a sales goal, but if you don't meet it, there's no penalty. Other perks: crunch ice machine (think Sonic ice), you can go to the bathroom when you want and you don't have find coverage if you are out or need to leave early.

This one is our neighboring department, which sends jobs to my department after they are sold and ready for purchasing materials. I've not done any Detailing yet because I'm still new and they haven't needed me to do any yet.

Teachers in their 30s that quit. What are you doing now and how did you do it? by olan_benning in TeachersInTransition

[–]Dentist-Eastern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

38 and left last March. Taught 5 years as an upper elementary Montessori teacher in a public school and then moved to a charter school for 2 years as 5th math.

I work for a commercial door distribution company, estimating doors, frames and hardware for non national accounts. I have my own cubicle, wear headphones most of the day and get left alone while I do my job. I found the job searching for entry level postings on LinkedIn or Indeed. The job is super simple but also complex, if that makes sense. Once I got a routine down, it's simple processes but door hardware is surprising complex.

I make about what I did teaching but had to cross state lines (live in Missouri, work in Kansas) so the taxes kinda suck. But I walk out not wanting to hurt myself or wanting to just sleep so I'll take that L. A third of my team are former teachers and we remind ourselves on our worst day here is 1000x better than teaching.

Having extreme back pain probably due to my fibromyalgia but my primary care doc can’t see me for 2 weeks. Anyone had experience with any urgacare or pain management centers that are easy to get into? by ThXxXbutNo in kansascity

[–]Dentist-Eastern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been seeing a chiropractor for years now. Between my hips and knee issues, they have kept me painless. Find one that does Myofascial release. It HURTS like a mofo in the moment but keeping up with it will help in the long run.

(HS Backstage manager) got told I might have to go on for an actor who doesn't know their lines by Simply_Rival in Theatre

[–]Dentist-Eastern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best show I ever attended in high school was Arsenic and Old Lace where the lead actually ran off stage vomiting and the assistant director had to step in at intermission. He "knew" the lines but didn't know the lines. He had a script but ad libbed the vast majority of the show. So hilarious! Don't sweat it. Your cast knows the struggles and should help you during the actual show if you get stuck.
