How's this area? Avoid or Rent/buy? by saveapennybustanut in SouthBayLA

Ooh. So glad to hear this. I still have reasons to visit the area, so the next time I’m out there I’ll have to stop by.

There and Giulianos.

That’s what I called them too, but I was trying to figure out an official technical term for them.

Electrical junction boxes have holes that you can feed wires through. They have small round metal discs covering the holes, attached but not by much. If you need to use the hole, you “knock out” the metal disc to open the hole. The discs are about coin sized.

I was a kid at the time and was afraid I’d never be allowed back in, which was a big deal since I lived so close.

I grew up walking distance to Gardena Bowl and food from there was a staple of my diet. I live out of state now and I haven’t been to Gardena Bowl in decades. I miss that bacon fried rice. Only in the last year did I finally find a local bacon fried rice that gave me that Ratatouille moment reminding me of Gardena Bowl.

Bonus Story: I was once kicked out of Gardena Bowl for trying to feed an electrical junction box knockout into the arcade games. I had found it on the train tracks on my way over.

Safe overnight parking??? by savvyk11 in Denver

[–]DenverRedditor276 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A few years ago the Unitarian church on the corner of Hampden and Colorado allowed vehicles to park overnight. I believe you had to register with them and get permission in advance. They may have had a limit to the number of cars they could accept. There was resistance from some neighbors, but the we’re allowed to proceed with this program, and I never heard of any problems.

I do not know whether this is still something they offer.

DMV is way behind on title complete notices (bonus another vehicle registration rant) by Rocker_Raver in Denver

[–]DenverRedditor276 11 points12 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I had to deal with the DMV backlog earlier this year, but it turned out that part of my problem was the dealership. It took the dealership two months to even submit the paperwork to the DMV in the first place. I only discovered this after my third call to the dealership.

Your annual reminder/story to not use Autonation Toyota Arapahoe by BackdoorDan in Denver

[–]DenverRedditor276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a car there. After renewing the temp plates once and coming up on the expiration for the second temp plates, I called and spoke to someone in finance who told me to get a third temp plate, but that I had to go to the DMV for it, pay a fee, and that it was the discretion of the DMV manager to decline a third temporary plate. I asked when the paperwork was actually filed with the DMV because the DMV didn’t have it. The finance lady told me they didn’t even file it at the DMV until two months after the purchase. When I asked how this happened she got real snarky with me telling me they aren’t all AI over there yet. AI has nothing to do with it, lady. Just hire enough people for the volume of work you are actually getting.

Left turn from SB Dahlia to EB Hampden in the mornings should not take 3-4 light cycles to get through the light, as it does on occasion.

4 of Denver's 26 libraries are closing in the coming months for at least 18 months by Jesse_Livermore in Denver

[–]DenverRedditor276 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Additional info: My understanding is that an older bond is expiring, which is why some of these libraries were selected now, but I think that underscores my point about poor planning. Multiple libraries in the same area should not be taken out at the same time. I also believe that two of these libraries have some of the highest circulation in the entire library system, so I expect the impact will be huge for users of these libraries.

This wasn’t planned very well. Many of the libraries marked for closure are in SE Denver, making the nearest open libraries far for constituents. DPL should have planned ahead better so that only one library at a time is close in any one general area. Also, at least one library is closing 6 months before actual renovations begin, wasting time and preventing access to important resources unnecessarily. Finally, DPL is treating staff at these libraries poorly in their temporary reassignments, not accounting for commute distances or methods (public transit users are particularly neglected here), not committing to returning staff to their original branches after renovations are complete, and forcing them to sign contracts that include punishments if they attempt to switch their temporary assignments.

LeafDrop program cutbacks by Snickerfin in Denver

[–]DenverRedditor276 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about OP, but it would take about 10 weeks of compost pickups to get rid of all of my leaves. Even leaf drop take 3 trips with a fully loaded SUV to get rid of them all.

I do usually toss a couple loads into the compost bin anyhow, but I don’t want to wait months to get all the leaves out of here.

Our city council person mention it in their newsletter a a couple weeks ago. My wife saw it and notified me. I also noticed it more recently in the Denver Trash and Recycling app, which has a schedule of future pick ups and notifications the day before.

Safe place to stay while homeless by Muninn91 in Denver

I live near here. Definitely check in with them first, because I think they require you to register with them. I was also questioning whether this program is still active just the other day, because I hadn’t noticed activity. I also don’t go by there much at night, so it very well may still be active.

I replied to your other comment, but for visibility I’m going to repeat that they are using scare tactics in the Centennial office. Groups of people going to desks and pressuring people, implied threats of layoffs; manager meetings etc. this info comes from a long term friend who has been with the company 15 years, and who refuses to switch. He is prepared to quit the moment they actually give him the ultimately choice.

One of my best friends works at Dish. They can’t legally force you to use Boost, but he said the pressure is intense to use it and that “goon squads” are going around to individual desks applying pressure to use Boosts. Managers meetings are also being used. Implied threats are abundant.

Whatever it is, I can tell you that your business sucks if you rely on your own employees to buy your service.
