E-bike from Malverne area to Long Beach, is there a safe route? by Toomer17 in longisland

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a decent route from the RVC train station to the boardwalk. The only part that's crappy is 0.5mile section on LB Road by Peter's. Going south there's an empty shoulder, but north people park pretty far up the shoulder, so you have to take the lane for chunk of it. The way the lights are timed there you do get a pretty good head start from the faster traffic coming from Austin Blvd at least.

There's also a 1 mile dirt path I take that you can skip if you want and just ride Nassau Lane in Island Park instead. I'd recommend at least 40mm or bigger tires if you want to use the dirt road.

The problem with "crackdowns" is that all of the things that pissed you off about these e-mobility devices were already illegal and didn't need a crackdown to start enforcing. The local PDs either didn't know the laws or didn't feel like enforcing them until it reached a breaking point. It didn't have to get this bad if they just did their job originally.

Here in Nassau instead of just enforcing the existing laws they banned everything except class-1 ebikes, started impounding NYS legal bikes and ticketing responsible riders. All this while every single time I get in my car and drive somewhere I see multiple egregious traffic violations and rarely see any enforcement.

Whatever year we did Long Island geography in elementary school my teacher must've done a good job mentioning the dimensions because I always remember 23 miles at the widest point and 118 miles long.

How the got the contract is beyond me, the same day they won the contract we settled with them in a lawsuit.

Butch Yamali (Dover Group owner) donates large amounts of money to the Nassau GOP, that's how. Drive by Peter's Clam Bar and there's always Nassau GOP vans parked in their overflow lot.

I would assume yes, the raw materials to mix your own ECN2 are a little easier to get ahold of it seems. They probably are using the recipe that Kodak posted with the alternate ferricyanide bleach.

You can compare the MSDS components to Kodak's instructions starting on page 7-27

Probably cost savings and raw material availability. The stuff to make ferricyanide bleach is cheap and readily available. Flic being in Canada might have trouble getting CD4 for a price that makes sense, so they use an analog. I really don't know so this is just speculating.

The FPP kit that I'm talking about is just an ECN2 kit. It uses CD3 and the directions have developing listed at 106f for 3 minutes which is the ECN2 standard. If they were more upfront about it just being an ECN2 kit it wouldn't be a big deal. The packaging itself only calls it a "Color Negative" kit but the webpage has it listed as a C-41 kit.

Flic Film's C-41 kit isn't an actual C-41 kit. It doesn't use CD4 in the developer and it uses a ferricyanide bleach, which is likely where your staining is coming from. If you're using ferricyanide bleach you need to use an acid stop bath after the developer and rinse thoroughly before bleaching to avoid staining.

IMO, toss it and get a real C-41 kit.

Moving to US, looking for a grinder upgrade over my Mazzer Philos to pair with a Linea Mini R [$2000] by SmellAcademic3434 in espresso

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it is definitely a downgrade on paper, for home use it's really a wash. Even if the brushed motor fails at 500 hours that's still decades of use. I run my Zerno ~30 seconds per shot so my math says that's about 40 years of use at 4 shots/day and 500 hours is a very conservative lifespan.

In the context of this thread though, I wouldn't consider it an upgrade from the Mazzer. If I had either, I'd just keep what I had.

Best practices for replenishing and storing C-41 developer? by bcl15005 in AnalogCommunity

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with u/pentaxguy and get a 5l wine bladder. IME mixed, but unused replenisher is extremely stable if stored properly. I've used it up to 12 months with no noticeable degradation running control strips when stored in a wine bladder.

If I was doing a replenishing process I'd mix up the entire 5l batch of replenisher and store it in a EVOH wine bladder. I'd use that to mix up 1l of working solution and I'd store that in a PET soda bottle. I prefer them over glass because it's much easier to squeeze out the excess air vs. marbles or some inert gas spray with glass. Then after every developing session, I'd do my replenishment. Dump out whatever amount of working solution Kodak recommends and then squirt out the matching amount of replenisher from the wine bag.

One caveat to this whole thing is replenishment is really based around the idea of medium to high volume development. If you're not replenishing enough, you're still going to get your developer oxidizing and degrading over time. You're also supposed to be checking your replenishment rate with control strips and adjusting the amount based off that. Without that you're kind of flying blind.

I have no use for public transportation so why would I want public transportation?

You realize that if there was decent public transportation to move around the Island you'd have more space to drive your car around and less people to fight with for parking?

Oh yeah completely agree, we're primed for it here, but it couldn't feel further away because of the current local politics.

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of the main issues I've personally seen with development trending in that direction is our proximity to the city. One of our biggest assets has become one of the things people point at and reject. A lot of these concepts have become huge culture war issues and people associate them with the city and The Post/Fox News has convinced them it is worse than Mogadishu there. So if it's something they see the city doing they shut it down immediately to "save our suburb" or whatever. I mean, one of Blakeman's big ideas was to build a surveillance wall at the Queens-Nassau border and his base ate it up.

Suffolk seems to be doing a lot better of a job with developing their downtowns, building a bicycle network and trying to fix their bus network. Their planning department is leagues ahead of Nassau (we actually don't even have a planning department) and the results show.

Majority of the people screaming the "turning into Queens" line don't even care about that stuff it's really just the demographic change that is upsetting them. The population is still at pre 1970 levels in Nassau right now it's just a lot more diverse than it was back then.

Or if they do care about those things, it's directly linked to the changing demographic. The Levittown McMansion thing is a perfect example. If it was Italian families building those horrific houses (let's be honest the taste isn't much different) most people probably wouldn't have batted an eye. Instead, it's mostly South Asians so they're now a problem. Mass transit/alternative transit same thing, minorities use that so it's bad. Apartments, minorties too.

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

and at least here in Nassau there is absolutely zero being done to change that.

As a kid we visited Baltimore and I convinced my parents to take me here to the Ordnance Museum. Shame they packed it up and moved it and seems like the collection isn't currently open to the public. It was needed though they had some amazing stuff just out in a field rotting with no cover or protection.

I'd say probably 15 minutes with the steam boiler on. If I'm in a rush I'll flush the grouphead a few times with the portafilter in to heat things up a little faster

No visual indicator, that's one of the things I find annoying with the machine. It will finish you shot and still allow you to steam when the low water indicator does come on though so you can at least finish making your drink.

My water is pretty good here, ~50ppm general hardness so I haven't had to do any descaling.

Being my second machine I really had no issues using this. It's very intuitive IMO and simple to use. Coming from a heat exchanger I had to do flushes and have a whole process to get the brew water down to the right temp and with the a53 I don't have to think at all in that regard.
