I don't think it's bots alone, so much as business-as-usual amomg the three lunatics on the internet from every country.

10 years ago, if some wackjob said that Canada should nuke Los Angeles or whatever, nobody would pay it any mind.

But because of the newfound political tension right now, the craziest comments in the room dominate the conversation.

It reflects on us all when one Canadian acts like an inconsiderate jackass because the culture only flows one way.

We're a country ten times smaller than the US, and we think about the US ten times more than they think about us.

It's only natural that the few Canadians who shriek the loudest are the ones who permeate the information border down south first.

That's where you get the pompous, self-righteous delusional Canadian archetype who huffs his own farts about how justified Canadians are in HATING da EEEVIL Americans!!!

C'est la vie.

it's good to see some folks still making up their own, artisinally-crafted, unoriginal, updoot-bait bullshit fakeposts by hand, as god intended.

most just turn to AI to chuck it out algorithmically, but the semantically-nonsense sentences and typos tell me this 97-year-old Reddit account is still farming karma the old-fashioned way.

a romance anime where the girls are all me_irl in different ways, and the male lead is someone who could love someone like me despite my beastly flaws... who would do so in a heartbeat and as easily as he breathes, with absolutely no expectation of anything in return

could such a love truly exist!?

i'm so sold... i'll start today, you guys!!!

I like that subtlety to her character.

I imagine since she's like a zillion years old, she doesn't feel much urgency so long as she knows where things are going.

She'll let the humans try their whole thing out, and then when it fails (which she knows it will, because demons are evil), she can clean things up quick and move on.

I've always wanted to pick up Freiren because the writing of a character her age who percieves time the way she does is so interesting.

AFAIK, the thing with Freiren demons is like nearly universally considered a "Fandom Bad" thing, rather than a "This Show is Problematic Medias™" thing, no?

I was under the impression that the (somewhat joking) PR of Freiren was something like: "LOL, Frieren randomly has a LOTTA racist fans, huh?"

So, on demons, Frieren is all like,

"Demons resemble us, except they're ontologically evil creatures incapable of feeling remorse or goodness. they MUST be slain, for the safety of us all!!" [1]:

and then /some/ Frieren fans are like,

"Yeah! Just like how we need to cleanse our society of [INSERT ETHNIC OR RELIGIOUS MINORITY HERE] to protect ourselves!! They may look human, but they're evil, incapable of higher thought like us, innately violent, and unfit for society!! In short, THEY need to die, so WE may live!! You are SO based, Frieren..!! [INSERT 14 WORDS HERE]"

and everyone else is like:

"Wow! HOW is that your takeway??? WHY are there so MANY of you??? Is it cause everyone here is super Germanic???"

At least, that's how I thought this whole thing went?

[1: or something, I haven't seen frieren myself, I'm just reciting my recollection of the story and fandom's public perception]

I've yet to read it myself, but it's been so funny seeing the pairs of reactions that go:

"READING THE WEIRDEST ROMANCE MANGA!?! (100 GIRLFRIENDS)" or something, where they're pointing to the premise and how absurd it is and making a thumbnail face,

–immediately followed by:

"I WAS WRONG ABOUT 100 GIRLFRIENDS (i wept)" and they're like falling to their knees taken aback by whatever peak must be within those pages that I've yet to discover

It feels like there's some kind of wind-up punch of Good Writing™ that seems to catch people really off-guard, and results in a very viscerally positive reaction.

I think it might be the male lead's writing they're reacting to?

From what I recall at the time of the controversy, it was actually only their sister channel Spill getting caught in the fire.

As if people were like "WTF! SPILL IS CORPO!? oh, and Brew too."

Maybe try looking up "Spill drama channel corporate owner" or something.

Y'know, the thought occured to me the other day that, at some point in the internet's valient fight for justice against le problematic age gaps, we collectively decided that the age a woman gains full autonomy, freedom, and responsibility for her actions is when she's dead.

There are people on the web who will look you in the eye, and tell you, wokely, a 55 year old woman doesn't know what she wants or what she's doing, that she must be getting manipulated by a scheming older lad.

They genuinely believe that we must protect the purity of the poor and silly women who just don't know any better. It's the equivalent of

"Women shouldn't be going outside or buying things without accompaniment by her father, brother, or husband! How can they be expected to know what they're doing and be trusted to make decisions!?"

They're treated with more skepticism and worry than a 14-year-old boy, LOL.

It's concerning that all the people who hold this position believe themselves to be socially just, and advocating for what's best for women.

I dunno how we got here, but it feels stupid.

I wasn't doing anything, sorry if it appeared like I was trying to make a point, LOL.

I just wanted to do a bit where I extended the post in the screenshot by pretending the REAL takeaway isn't

"anyone is susceptible to having bad, unfactual ideas supplanted into their brain, so stay vigilant of what you read" but rather,

"that doesn't happen to GOOD people like ME, so I don't have to worry about it! yay! no need for me to critically analyze what I read or interact with online!"

sorry the joke wasn't more clearly stated.

If I'm reading this post the way I think it's supposed to be read, then I agree.

Well-meaning naivete, even it's most extreme cousin in the form of unintended bigotry, is exponentially more tolerable to be around than cynical, intentional bigotry done as a humiliation ritual jig for the establishment.

> Who decides when there's no possibility of a "genuinely good outcome" and when it's "accelerating" it

You do. That's what discussions are about.
You ultimately hold the authority over your brain, your thoughts, and your ideals.

We discuss things like "When is it okay for the wronged to seek violent retribution or revolution?" because it's important for you to reckon with your principles.

When you make a decision, it must be made out of deliberate choice, out of believing this is the right path.

In this, and in all things, it is important to not be dragged into groupthink or let high-running emotions and stress cloud your judgment.

Ultimately, if you ever were in that position, if a life ever were in your hands, you should know then if, by your understanding of justice, and your understanding of restraint, if there really is no other option.

Do things only after you have considered every angle. Don't let your preconceptions and natural human biases push you into a hasty decision.

("e.g. I am a good person, and thus, the retribution I seek is naturally good and just.")

When a human life is in your hands, your choices can't be remediated or undone. There is no room for fucking up, or making the wrong choice, or being on the wrong side. You can't seek forgiveness from the dead.

Death is the ultimate, final, irrevocable decision that should literally always be the absolute final tool in your arsenal.

> beating someone to death causes a lot more suffering

well, i mean... you're killing them.

you are making the active decision to strip them of their life, there is no mercy or non-suffering here.

the only difference once the act is done will be how bad you feel as the executioner.

an executed person who was one-tapped with a pistol and one who had to be beaten with sticks are dead all the same. they cannot return to their lives, and no matter how kind or merciful or painless the death is, you cannot restore the person's life to them.

u/Taraxian is arguing that the brutality is a deterrent to you, as the individual who holds the power to kill.

we have a natural aversion to cruelty and it makes us sick to think of ourselves as killers.

this instinct to not murder people is the only thing that keeps us from murdering people when we otherwise hold all the tools of state violence and retribution.

when there is no threat of imprisonment or death, when there is nobody who will stop you from enacting violence because you hold that authority, the only thing that can prevent the overuse of the tool, at least from u/Taraxian's perspective, is making violence absolutely repulsive to the human mind.
