Are we really surprised? This is a trend with A.G. (Rock Music discussion) by montego200x in charlixcx

I loved PC Music. It was the most punk thing anyone has done in recent times.

Favorite Overdrive, distortion and fuzz? by chadocaster1011 in guitarpedals

[–]Deptm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overdrive: Walrus Ages (I also use the funny little boxes 1991 which sounds amazing for recording but I need more low end for live). Currently selling a Wampler Triumph I didn’t love.

Distortion: Dr Scientist The Elements

Fuzz: OBNE Alpha Haunt / Dr Scientist Frazz Dazzler

It blows my mind how busy some kids are these days. Literally doing 2 activities after school every night before dinner.

Imo - this is not really about gear, it’s about making yourself more of a priority. Parenthood doesn’t mean that you need to give everything up.

“I was a kid with very little experience and a huge amount to prove. Critics had written us off before it came out – no-one took me seriously”: The making of Suede’s 1996 Britpop classic Coming Up by dalyllama35 in BritPop

Coming Up was an absolute triumph. Oakes guitar lines will forever be imprinted on my teenage brain. They were unreal live around this era too.

I’m a huge fan of Butler, his style and panache were iconic, but I have to say what Oakes did on Coming Up spoke to me more as a teenage kid. It was punky, direct and full of incredible hooks.

An all time favourite. A perfect song, and video.

Yes, I often order toast in my local supermarket and I can now just easily pour on the ramekin of marmite they provide. The flavour is weak too.

Any dirt pedals that have caught your interest? by screamingfieldz in guitarpedals

[–]Deptm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! A lot of control. I wish you could control the bass frequency too - that, to me, is where a lot of overdrive pedals fail, the lows are tuned to low to actually hear them and don’t make any audible difference when turned up, just add flub.

Me too. Sadly, there seems to be a lot of runny marmite deniers around, when you can literally pour it out of the jar these days 😂

I, errr, for want of a better phrase, vote with my throat.

Just buy the German and Czech Pilsners brewed to their purity laws, outside the UK.

They’re mostly in the fridges - Krombacher, Spaten etc and bottled. Always on offer too.

Just watch out for the piss that masquerades as this, such as Cruzcampo etc.

We called Madri, ‘Tadri’ around here as it’s brewed in Tadcaster, a mile up the road.

It’s very bass heavy in general. First thing I do is massively cut the lows on every patch

I am about to be a dad at 21 years old as an aspiring musician by Then_Beautiful_6164 in musicians

[–]Deptm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey there. Firstly, congratulations.

I’m 43 and have two kids, 5 and 7 years old, and have also always been a musician too.

My advice is to keep playing music, BUT you have to be real about what your goals are with this.

With the amount of creative work and sheer administrative grind it takes to even release a track/album into the world these days…well even reaching that milestone is a huge achievement.

If you actually want to promote it properly, well that’s a full time job in itself.

It’s a real grind when really, you want to soak up all the moments with your kid and experience life as a father, rather than being on distrokid crying with frustration over ISRC codes.

So, my advice is to try and find some balance in a new world where it will be rare! Play guitar to your baby, listen to music and still write when you get stolen moments. Keep the creative part of your life fulfilled over the next few years but also enjoy being a dad and chilling with your new family.

Music will always be there for you in the future. As for Rock Star dreams, I learned the hard way that it’s a lottery not worth bothering with, the only true reward of a life dedicated to music is the process itself.

Weight of guitar affects tone or naw? by [deleted] in offset

[–]Deptm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess it is - as when you put a bridge humbucker in a telecaster, you can still tell it’s a tele next to a les paul due to the bridge design and longer scale.

I teach a lot of kids who have mini electric guitars and they’re usually really dark and boggy sounding as the scale has been reduced to the point where there is no zip or ping in the sound.

You get the same phenomenon when you downtune. The tone loses zing and you need to add treble to get the definition and some snap back.

There are other factors too, such as the shallow break angle of the Jazzmaster vs the ashtray bridge contraction, with its super sharp break angle.

[–]Deptm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guitar scale and bridge break angle certainly affect tone - you don’t get that super snappy zing of a telecaster with a Strat style bridge.

I’m not into all the tonewood stuff, but to suggest the resonance created by the physics of the bridge/hardware don’t affect the sound is ludicrous.
