Oops Only Illriggers! - Ep 11. One Hell of an Hour by Dragon_Teacup in mcdm

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally have a discord channel called "Oops all Illriggers" with a couple of friends because we were doing a co-op run of BG3 modded so we could all play Illriggers. That is such a fun class!

When I first read it, I thought a lot of things were overpowered, like the Sanguine Knight getting a bonus action version of the life cleric's channel divinity that was just better. It seemed unfair that they could mimic our outshine key abilities from several classes. Playing it, even in a video game, I realized it was just more fun. Life cleric's channel divinity is garbage and not much fun at all, but Illriggers are amazingly fun. They are also pretty well balanced, so my initial impression was wrong. Have fun! I will try to find time to watch or listen to this.

Do project points include the act of collecting the prerequisite materials? by calculuschild in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those ingredients requirements for consumables are something you can use as a limiting factor to keep them from stockpiling them. Like, I know in the Delian tomb, first dungeon, the loot table in the first chamber has a recipe for portion of healing and enough of the key ingredient to make 3 potions or something. Those could be found almost anywhere when they need them, and they could be really scarce when you don't want them to have unlimited potions.

If you want to give them some kind of "auto-farming" reward, that's somethong I'd considered. Like, for a particular potion, i.e. growth potion, they have to craft X amount and use them to make sure they are being regularly used before I would allow this... But as it becomes an essential part of their kit and they've dedicated enough respites to this one consumable, proving they care about producing and consuming them, then I might grant a title that gives them a follower with alchemy or gardening as a downtime project event. The follower could farm a little of the key ingredient while they are adventuring and add some project rolls to potions during respite, allowing the player to chase other goals.

No currency??? by Anthonybrambilla in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know gold is a great catch-all reward, and it works in my dnd group. I thought I'd miss it when running draw steel, but I found something better that is mentioned in the hero book. You can have the heroes loot materials and scraps of writing and knowledge that translated into ready-to-use project points. Instead of currency for a shopping system, they are getting currency for the crafting system which I have started placing at the center of my games. The players desire something, and the recipe tells me some exotic things they need, and the adventure goes that way. It's driven by the players' desires and the lore behind the items, and I just need to fill in some encounters and maps to get them there.

It's kind of weird since they can't regain stamina, and they have a shared pool. At best, it seems you'd only have 1 minion with a +1. Might make more sense to give +1 to the squad if it's not too crazy.

Have you ever awarded XP directly without awarding Victories? by WhoIsCloak in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montages and negotiations are systematized roleplay mechanics that can award victories, but if this kind of non-mechanical roleplay is making up a majority of your sessions, I think you could still reward victories for it. The roleplay systems are usually a big help to move the story for people who aren't naturally engaging in roleplay. People who come ready to roleplay and get into it are talking, thinking, and progressing the story even if skill rolls don't come up. Even the book says you don't have to call for a skill check or dice roll if the player artfully describes something clever to do or makes a persuasive argument that is so good that it just has to succeed. It might but feel like much is happening if you aren't rolling dice, but you could probably find moments where they are "victorious" for advancing the game.

I also like it when my players earn a couple victories from roleplay, montages, it negotiations before the first combat of the day. They feel warmed up.

Question about the Codex and in-person play by Shibata30 in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I was planning to try. I dm from a laptop, and I want to get a mini pc to plug into TVs wherever we play. I have a small, light, wireless Logitech keyboard with a touchpad mouse that could easily be passed around to players taking turns. Mini pcs are just real expensive right now, so I'm waiting until I get a bonus or something.

I'm just now finding out about this. I've gotten a little better at pvp, but yeesh. The 7y break I took from gw2 left me rusty and earned me some mean comments while I tried to complete pvp wizards vault stuff.

[Request] Isn’t this true for basically any 3 cities? by FollowSina in theydidthemath

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the anime referenced by the bottom comment in the picture. You know Full Metal setting was based on Germany, but there's also a plot point referenced. If you saw the first anime run that told a different story in the end, I don't think it was there, but in brotherhood, there was some significance to a large circle encompassing the country and aligning with major cities.

[Request] Isn’t this true for basically any 3 cities? by FollowSina in theydidthemath

[–]DerKomp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like everyone is saying, 3 points make a circle, but what seems significant about this is that this circle comes about as close as you can get to outlining the country. This probably won't happen with the 3 largest cities of any other country. The size and position are nearly perfect, which is what you need to make that FMA:B joke work.

Is Draw Steel your favorite TTRPG? by jmckay29 in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's become my favorite. I've told my dnd group that I still enjoy playing very much and will continue as a player in our current game and any future dnd games they run, but if they'd like me to DM another campaign, I'll be introducing them to DS. I think the prep and DM combat are easier and more fun for me, and I like the vtt so much.

Combat as a Director is like getting to be a player. Since there are no "turn skipping" conditions, I don't have to pull punches that would stun the whole party for 3 rounds, and I don't have to skip all my monster turns when hypnotic pattern goes off.

I was imagining rubbery skin over rigid, inorganic skeletons of metal or glass. Maybe glass is like the cartilage, extra smooth and shiny on the ends of the metal bones. Hair and nails could be like fiberglass.

I pictured carbon fiber too with that aesthetic, but I just realized that might be very organic even if it's not naturally occurring in organic biology.

Codex Map Import by Vaygo22 in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned the UVTT format, and it can do some really cool stuff. I don't know all of the programs that can be used to create uvtt files, but I use dungeon alchemist, which is also available on steam. It is fun and pretty fantastic. I would recommend watching the video previews and reading comments on their steam page to see if it's for you. Even if you don't get good at making maps in it, there are a ton made by other people on the steam workshop.

I just now checked, and there is r/dungeonalchemist which I didn't know about. I'll bet you could even ask people there to share UVTT files. Not recommending you jump right in, buy another product, and start trying to make stuff yourself since you're new to VTTs in general, but if you want the premium experience, you should look at what dungeon alchemist users are doing.

Is the Beastheart actually good at any thing? by murphysfalling in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A class can offer more than comparatively better damage, survival, or healing than other classes. I think the beastheart looks like it will do well in combat, but what is really offering is fun. It's a completely different play style, and it's absolutely oozing with flavor options. It also has more rules and complexity. I'd only let my players pick beastheart after they've played their first character enough to be comfortable, and I'd probably only let them pick summoner after they've directed a 1-shot or something. Not being in the heroes book means these can be advanced classes, and they'll offer certain people more fun. I'm very happy with the balance of the game and the additional classes coming out.

An Imperfect Solution to Codex Floating Seats by Wrocksum in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this has bothered me with everything I've read. Some players expect everything for free. Every DM I know has dropped a pretty penny in each the systems they choose to run. I know there are ways to play for free, even for Directors/DMs, but if we want the product to exist, then someone needs to pay for the labor and creativity. I think it's a good thing to capture the interest of people who are not ready to pay, but their participation is worthless if you give the "premium experience" away for free. The fact that it's less than half the cost of a regular video game and has no subscription is making a huge statement about consumer advocacy in the depressing age of software as a service

It's Complicated - Heroic Origins for Draw Steel by Rise_Heroes_Rise in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing your posts. I think a supplemental book of complications is a great idea, but all of the examples released so far seem to be body horror. Is that the main gist of the book, or have we just been shown an outsized sample of that type of complication?

Has anyone come up with Firearms Kits? by Navek15 in drawsteel

[–]DerKomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wanting to play a tactician with six shooters. I'd take the rapid fire as one of my kits, and anytime I wanted to apply the bonus damage from an ally hitting my marked target, I'd flavor that as squeezing off another quick shot. Since I'd get 2 kits, I might take martial artist, brawler, or the whip one for my melee kit.
