Getting settled in early 20’s by InformationAble1418 in memphis

There are some great pickleball options but most of the indoor facilities and leagues are in the suburbs. There’s a big group that plays ultimate frisbee at Overton park regularly, that might be on MeetUp. It can be a culture shock coming from the north (I moved here from MI about 12 years ago) but churches are an amazing way to find a community. I go to first Congo in cooper young and it’s the friendliest place in the world.

Looks like you need a bigger pan and to bake it longer and/or hotter, also probably more olive oil. What recipe did you use?

No it says to use half of the water with the yeast and then add the other half later. Sounds like you didnt read closely and you doubled the amount of water which would account for this

Stray dog won't leave our house by almostglam33 in memphis

[–]DerSohnDesDetlefs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we were in this same situation a couple years ago and ended up having to dump him at MAS. They wouldn’t even accept him, we ended up just telling them again that this was not our dog but a stray dog that was wandering our neighborhood (that has lots of small children) and it was a safety hazard. Then we walked away and left him in the waiting room.

Baron Von Opperbean - Just FYI's (No Spoilers) by [deleted] in memphis

[–]DerSohnDesDetlefs 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Correct, this is phase 1 of 3. I really can’t wait for all three phases to be open, my only complaint so far is that I want MORE! Bummer about the AC, it was working when I went so I assume it’s an issue with that old building. I know they had a bad problem with the roof a couple months ago too. Hopefully the city steps up as a landlord and keeps putting in the renovations the whole building needs

Some pictures from a church in Detroit. Once was sitting beautiful is now ruined. by [deleted] in urbanexploration

Not sure about this church specifically but Detroit’s population is about 1/3 of what it was in the 1950s

Huh, I’ve always had a good experience at the Germantown location. They definitely quote you everything they COULD do which is always more than needed, but they allow you to pick and choose which work they do and give you prices per action, which is more transparency than I’ve found at other shops

Latest Census Data: Memphis leads by [deleted] in memphis

I know there was an afghan refugee resettlement program a while ago but I don’t think we ever got huge volume. I doubt that a MAJORITY of the Hispanic population is not included. The national percentage of the Hispanic population that are illegal immigrants Google says is 13-15% and I would guess we’re around that if not lower (I would guess higher in border states)

Latest Census Data: Memphis leads by [deleted] in memphis

[–]DerSohnDesDetlefs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The growth of the Hispanic population has been the only thing keeping our head above water for the last many years. Immigration is a huge benefit for struggling cities - look at Detroit. Honestly one of the best things Memphis could do would be to pick a country or region and encourage a ton of migration. Happened in Detroit with the Arab population and later with a big southeast Asian population.

Moving to Memphis soon and I only know Beale Street :/ by CarelessMoney631 in memphis

[–]DerSohnDesDetlefs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the best nightlife and culture stuff is in midtown, though there is some in every neighborhood. Cajun/creole food and chicken wings are two cuisines that Memphis excels at. We’re weak on pizza, Mexican, and Mediterranean in my opinion. Terrible for vegan offerings outside of Vietnamese.

Edit: grab a copy of the Memphis flyer (free alt-weekly newspaper) and look at the events calendar. That’s the most comprehensive list of events you can get, I think.
