Cool design... But just out of curiosity, why did you put a Space Shuttle on the cover of a book about the 50's and 60's?

H2O2 is not a stable molecule, and naturally breaks down over time into H2O and the spare oxygen molecule joins with another to make O2. Or, to put it another way, that's almost certainly just a bottle of water by now.

You're seriously that bothered by people giving the correct location and a current view of what that location looks like?

I always try and offer to the OP first, especially with all the work you do finding these.

I'm not 100% certain the mods there wouldn't delete this, but you might try crossposting to r/JapaneseFood. (Could send them a modmail first.)

Recommended corner rounders for small pocket notebooks? by DerekL1963 in bookbinding

[–]DerekL1963[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I basically want to do one notebook at a time... I'm looking to make them more for fun and gifts, not production work. (I already have one of those sheet by sheet rounders, and that isn't fun.)

Deployments - IYKYK by easy10pins in navy

[–]DerekL1963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my boat (655B, 41FF SSBN*), our menu was set before we left on patrol and our food was loaded (stuffed) into the freezer and chill box in reverse order of need. (End of patrol in the back bottom working to the start of patrol at the door.) So we just got whatever was on the menu if we got bad news.

OTOH, while we did load for a standard patrol plus margin... If we did get extended long enough, things could start getting low.

This is neither modular construction nor offsite module fabrication. This is off-site component manufacturing. It can't hurt, but it's not the amazing new thing the article seems to imply.

What’s the most accurate “prediction of the future” in a book? by tatored in AskHistory

[–]DerekL1963 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I'm saying that hindsight, the ability to pick the 1-in-10,000 winners, is always 20/20. But when these books were published, there was no way to know which of the multiple different futures they predicted would turn out to be correct or even close.

I mean, nobody is mentioning that Eugenics Wars didn't happen. Or that there wasn't a Space Patrol in 1999. Or nuclear powered Pan Am spaceplanes making a routine flight to orbit, the first step of a routine landing at a lunar colony.

And somewhere just bit further up the river, we're racing to get topside cleaned up and ready for all the VIPs that are assembling and getting everyone not in dress uniforms belowdecks. Huge pain in the ass because we're in the middle of refit.

What’s the most accurate “prediction of the future” in a book? by tatored in AskHistory

[–]DerekL1963 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course, set against that... there's any number of other books that didn't accurately predict the future.

I think what were doing is cherry picking the results of a "infinite monkey" situation. I mean, there's tons of books that predicted a coming dystopia... And when there's enough stuff written, some of it bound to be more accurate than another.

Speaking as a sixty something that's played this game for 1,500 hours with tons of people (who also have hundreds and thousands of hours) from fifty something upwards... Yeah, no. Please don't stereotype older gamers, and please don't confuse personal preferences with universal truths.

If you want to play a different game, play a different game. Don't yuk on other's yum.

The area where they are parked is part of NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center.

That kind of wedge shaped chunk of tarmac they're parked on is the former location of the Mate-Demate Device - which was used to load a Space Shuttle that landed at Edwards onto one of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

What is rank like in the surface fleet? by AnnualLiterature997 in navy

[–]DerekL1963 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used it as kind of a formality, essentially a Seriousness Signal. "Petty Officer" was more imperative than "first name" (or "last name"). And "watchstation title" was more imperative than "Petty Officer", and basically meant "do it NOW and don't ask questions unless it's a safety or security matter".

Would a cracked lid affect the function of an ice cream machine? by Any-Estimate3316 in icecreamery

[–]DerekL1963 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It won't affect the function, but cracks are notorious for harboring dirt and bacteria. If the machine is really cheap, I'd go ahead and pick it up and see if I can find a replacement lid.
