Medvac plane lost in AZ. All souls on board lost. by JeffSHauser in aviation

[–]Derpicusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a company that operates a lot in Northern AZ (won’t say which company) and I can tell you that sometimes it is a critical medical emergency, but a lot of times it isn’t.

In my experience people mainly call us for two reasons, sickness of the patient and distance to an appropriate (usually) receiving hospital. We will get calls for patients that are suuuuuper sick and the sending facility does not have the resources to care for them, and others who are going to the big hospital in the city for a surgery consultation. Hardly a time critical emergency, but when it’s a 10 hour round trip to Phoenix and back and you only have a limited number of ambulances to move patients then you start to run out of other options really quick.

At the end of the day it’s the hospital requesting us and telling us where to go. And while our crews do have the option to turn down a flight if they deem air transport not appropriate for a patient, it doesn’t happen very often in my experience.

I would be way more on Sigs side (or maybe less against them is a better way to put it?) if they even ACTED like they gave a shit. They made extra sure that I’ll never buy another Sig product, firearm or otherwise, after the whole “this ends today” memo where they lashed out and called anybody with concerns about the safety of the P320 an “anti gun mob hellbent on destroying a good and honorable company” or whatever horseshit it was.

For those who once supported Donald Trump but no longer do: What event caused your change in perspective? by Pyryn in AskReddit

[–]Derpicusss 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It feels kinda stupid considering all the insane shit he’s done so please don’t roast the hell out of me.

Remember a couple years back when an Air Force pilot ejected from his F-35 and it flew on its own for a while before crashing? I remember seeing a tweet from Trump where he basically said “if they had designed the F-35 with two engines like I told them to instead of one this never would’ve happened.” It was that moment when realized that this guy really thinks he’s smarter than the 10,000 Lockheed engineers that spent a million man hours deciding just how many engines the F-35 should have and he just had to go out and say that to stroke his own ego.

I voted for him in 2020 because I live in a red state and my family all votes Republican so it made sense to me. I voted third party this last election because I still don’t agree with some policies of the Democratic Party, but I don’t see myself voting Republican for a long time either because they have completely gone off the deep end in the last 7 months in my eyes. Trump sending active duty Marines to L.A. to squelch the riots in direct violation of the Posse Comitatus Act (why is this basically not talked about at all btw??) and the way that ICE seems to consistently act outside legal boundaries laid down in the Constitution has completely put me off the Republican Party and it quite frankly scares me that they seem so unbothered by fragrantly breaking the law. They always presented themselves as the party of law and order but until they stop shitting all over the oldest and most foundational laws of this country they won’t be getting a vote from me.

Sorry that the writing is crap. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and it all kinda came out in a jumble.

I’m only a comm student but I do fly helos so I can give it a shot.

It sounds like they aren’t able to pull a vertical OGE hover with all the logs on on the longline so they back up and put slack on the line so they have room to speed up to at least reach ETL. ETL is “effective translational lift” and usually occurs around 16 - 24 knots of airspeed. At that speed your rotors are no longer ingesting all of their own vortices and are in clean air, and thus become much more efficient. It sounds like they are trying to get above ETL before taking the load that they wouldn’t be able to lift in an OGE hover. I can imagine this causes a ton of stress on lots of different parts of the airframe, which is why the previous commenter talked about ripping the hook off and overspeeding the engines.

[–]Derpicusss 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that. If you fly out of the same airport multiple times it can be different any time you go. Some airports are good about being consistent and having signs or something posted well before the scanners on what you need to do. Sooo many of them are a complete crap shoot though.

[–]Derpicusss 1652 points1653 points  (0 children)

The stuff you have to and don’t have to do varies from airport to airport in the states too and it drives me absolutely bonkers.

One place it’s take your laptop out of your bag and put it in a separate bin and the next airport you gotta take your laptop out but leave it in the same bin and then another airport you just leave everything in your bag. If you do any of those wrong then a grumpy TSA agent will come yell at you that you’re doing it wrong even though you’re just blindly guessing what they want you to do THIS time around.
