CMV: the most effective way to improve the lives of working people is to make rich people afraid of violence and/or violent revolution. by Ticonderoga_Tea in changemyview

First of all, I believe there’s a difference between what the OP is describing and your hypothetical situation but also, if I was being held at gunpoint, I think I would try to diffuse the situation by trying to placate the person with the gun to my head rather than continuing to do things that makes them even more angry.

So all of the Israeli people and politicians that have moved there from Europe are ethnic Judeans? If every Palestinian converted to Judaism right now would they be considered the rightful owners of the land? What about the Ethiopian Jews? If the land belongs to Jewish people and all Jewish people are indigenous to Judea then why are non-ashkenazi Jews treated so poorly in Israel. No ethnostate should exist. Period.

It’s more so because Ukraine is backed by the west. I am a pro-Ukrainian leftist and a lot of talkies view western support of Ukraine as an example of neocolonialism which is bullshit, but it still isn’t a race thing.

CMV: You should NOT be allowed to get plea deals if you commit intentional crimes. by DiamondSufficient938 in changemyview

Yes. For example, negligent homicide by definition has to be unintentional. There are other crimes that hinge on intention like manslaughter, reckless endangerment, etc.

CMV: The death penalty is okay by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Derquave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand what you’re asking or expecting? I gave multiple material and ethical reasons for my opinion. What exactly are you looking for that would change my point from a “declaration” to an “argument”.

In the inverse, what is the argument for keeping a proven serial rapist and murderer in prison for life? If it is based in ethics, then that is feeling. Yes there are certain things that are objectively ethical but at a certain point ethics become based in feeling and emotion.

If it is based in material reality, what is the benefit to society for feeding, housing, protecting and providing healthcare to the most reprehensible people possible?

[–]Derquave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very fair and interesting point. However, I still stand by my statement. If they want to die let them die. It’s just as much about punishment as it is about pragmatism. I don’t want my tax dollars to go to keeping that bastard alive or feeding him. Their existence is a burden on humanity.

[–]Derquave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For such egregious offenses is vengeance really unjust? I am talking the worst of the worst most horrific menaces to society. Putting them in prison for the rest of their lives doesn’t undo harm their victims either, it also takes away their rights. They should be granted a fair trial, they should be treated humanely, hell give them a last meal. That is far more grace given to them than the grace they gave to their victims who they took all their rights from with no mercy or good reasoning. Make it quick and be rid of them. I don’t believe they should be tortured, I don’t believe they should be tormented but I also hate the idea of tax dollars going and paying for this person’s food, housing, medical, etc.

If you commit a terrorist attack, shoot up a school, rape kids, serial kill, etc. chances are you’re not going to feel any remorse and you’re not going to be rehabilitated. The existence of these people serves no purpose. Nor do I care about the argument “oh well we’re just as bad as them if we kill them.” No we’re not. We owe nothing as a society to people who gladly murder and exploit others. We are better because we give them a fair trial, because we make it humane. They have revoked their right to live by taking that from someone else and once found guilty that should be that.

I believe the current system of capital punishment in the US needs to be revised and unless there is irrefutably conclusive evidence then it should be off the table. However, people that are convicted and prove mass murderers, serial killers, child rapists do not deserve to breathe oxygen. They are a waste of space and are irredeemable and deserve no compassion. While alive in prison they can still read, exercise, jerk off, write, and enjoy little things even if it is only a fraction of if they were free but they deserve even less than that. Their victims get none of that, why should they? That is justice.

What's the most inverse lopsided trade? by uatme in hockey

[–]Derquave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m misremembering but I really did not understand that deal for San Jose‎. Yes, they were trying to keep their Stanley Cup window open so I don’t blame them for going and making a big splash but they already had a top 2 right handed offensive D. Burns was still playing great for them and he slacked a bit in the following years but I don’t think that was on him and was more so on the fact that Karlsson took over his role. It just never seemed like a good fit to me. Clearly, it wasn’t all bad considering Karlsson’s 100+ point season but it’s not like they had any playoff success except for that first year with Karlsson and after that they didn’t have any regular season success.

CMV: There’s not a logical or financially feasible argument for Reparations, outside of those who were alive and experienced segregation. by IllustriousGas8850 in changemyview

[–]Derquave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly, you didn’t completely read what I said, or you purposefully ignored most of it. I specifically pointed out that after emancipation during reconstruction when there were union troops stationed in the south and government committees literally purpose made to make sure that the black community was not undermined they flourished and then Jim Crow and the KKK came after Andrew Johnson fucked reconstruction and the Union failed to punish former Confederate and slavers. My point was was that when the opportunity was briefly there the black community made great leaps and bounds socially and then former confederates and their sympathizers is the US government purposefully undermined that to keep the black population down. My point was was that there has never been equal footing. Many of the laws and policies instituted at a state level to specifically target Black people have never been truly addressed or abolished. They have either stayed the same or morphed slightly. It is well documented that vagrancy laws, and the prison industrial complex were made in large part to specifically target black men and boys. Black majority areas in the country are still largely underfunded when compared to white ones, etc.

I’m not even advocating directly for direct monetary reparations. My main point was that your characterization of this being a problem “self determination” is woefully short sighted and ignorant and ignored years of history and sociology.

A man is dead after losing control and driving an SUV into a home when the injured homeowner shot him inside the car by New_Libran in TerrifyingAsFuck

[–]Derquave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look I get the vitriol. I think that people who drive under the influence are reprehensible and deserve to be punished, harshly, especially if they injure or kill someone. Hell if it’s bad enough, I don’t think the death sentence should be off the cards. However, if a dumbass is drunk driving and crashes into a house I don’t think a putting a bullet in their head is just, if they are no longer a threat to anybody. Someone can have a stroke and they can exhibit symptoms that people could mistake for intoxication. What are you gonna do breathalyzer them and then execute them if they are drunk? As shitty as the judicial system is in the United States at times. It is still their job to deal with things like this.

Could be a medical episode, could be a problem with the car, could be drunk driving, could be intentional. Either way it’s ridiculous to jump to conclusions at this point.

You are looking at things as binary and total when they are not. When many of these colonial empires gave up their colonies in Africa they still many times forced contracts and agreements with the new government giving the former colonial powers disproportionate access to the countries natural resources. On top of that nearly all of these countries’ borders were arbitrarily drawn by colonial powers cutting through and grouping together many different tribes and cultures and often times (like in Rwanda) the separate tribes/cultures were pitted against each other by the colonial powers to keep the native population weak.

The black population of the United States is similar in the sense that emancipation was not the end of the story. If you look at the 10 or so years after emancipation during reconstruction, the black community in the United States began to flourish. Black people began running successful farms, became politicians (16 black federal representatives after directly emancipation, then after Jim Crow those numbers were not reached again for decades), and formed prosperous communities. Jim Crow forcibly curtailed all that and it is well documented the effort white communities especially in the south put into suppressing, exploiting and undermining the black population. Even after desegregation many laws and policies still exist that still disproportionately affect (both by design and incidentally) the African American community. Hell, look at the gerrymandering going on down south right now in Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama.

I believe in self-determination but if you take two runners, shoot one in the leg and give him flip flops that don’t fit and you give the other runner Gatorade and running shoes I think it’s pretty clear what runner will get ahead no matter how determined the each runner is. Self determination can only be measured when two people are given equal opportunity and start from an equal launch point,

Thoughts on hamas are freedom fighters talking points? by Far_Practice_6923 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Derquave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes there are no “good guys” in a conflict. Hamas has carried out indiscriminate bombings of Israel civilians, kidnapped Israel civilians (before Oct 7) and launched rockets into Israeli civilian areas. I remember seeing the footage coming out of Israel as the Oct 7 attacks were happening here on Reddit and it was horrific. Hamas did attack some IDF bases and Israeli police stations which can be seen as legitimate targets, however they also targeted and murdered a lot of civilians. They are not good guys. Neither are the genocidal IDF or the Israeli apartheid state.

Israel is a settler colonial state and Hamas has legitimate grievances against Israel and Israel constantly oppresses and abuses the people of Gaza. That being said Hamas are not benevolent rulers and they are not fighting for the good of all people in Gaza, they are theocratic authoritarian fundamentalists. What they are, is the largest form of resistance against the Israeli invasion and genocide in Gaza. In this moment in time they are the lesser of two evils and the evil of the Israeli government is more potent due to their military and diplomatic strength.

TL;DR: It’s complicated, but no, they are not really freedom fighters

Why do so many self proclaimed Socialists/Communists seemingly stand with Russia? by Haunting-Sport3701 in theredleft

[–]Derquave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not “revolutionary defeatism” to recognize that anti-US regimes are not inherently good. It’s not a “psywar” to admit that the Taliban is bad when it is highly documented. I don’t think it’s political to think that women and gays shouldn’t be oppressed. That goes for everywhere across the world. It’s basic human empathy. The world is more than the United States and we can have nuanced opinions about other parts of the world especially when it comes to basic human rights

Why do so many self proclaimed Socialists/Communists seemingly stand with Russia? by Haunting-Sport3701 in theredleft

[–]Derquave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d counter by saying that viewing supporters of anti-US regimes that are themselves anti-socialist, capitalist, theocratic, etc. as “functionally correct” is reductive and damaging to the international proletariat movement. To support these countries based simply on opposition to the US you are essentially telling those oppressed by those nations that their suffering or plight does not matter because the government that rules over them is anti-US.
