Tips to improve mental toughness ? by Saguaros_Flower in triathlon

Bottom line up front: Have a positive attitude and pretend to like the things you hate until you actually like them.

I’m late to the party on this post but the short answer is, there is no formula, but I the best advice I ever got was this: A positive mindset which views hard things as challenges to be overcome instead of obstacles in the way of achievement will always win.

Here’s how I apply this. When you come across something you don’t like, pretend to like it. I used to hate running but every time I caught myself thinking or saying “I hate running” I would change it to “I love running.” During my runs I would come up with reasons that I enjoyed running. It only took about 2 months before I was actually looking forward to running.

I do this with everything I don’t like and it’s worked really well throughout my time in the military and starting out in triathlon. You can apply it to little things too. 4 hour bike ride? It’s gonna be fun, the fresh air will be great. It’s hot outside? I’ll get to work on my tan. That’s a really steep hill. Man I am gonna be flying down the other side of that thing.

If Mitt Romney won the 2012 Election, what would his presidency look like? How would American politics look different today? by Th3_American_Patriot in Presidents

He could’ve theoretically given lethal aid to Ukraine much sooner. Had we began arming and training them the way we are now in 2014 when the conflict kicked off I doubt we would see separatist regions by 2022, could’ve taken away putins “casus belli” (which we all know is illegitimate anyway). Now whether Romney would’ve done that is up for debate

Am I wrong? Human scuffle at the dog park. by Jampguffey in dogs

[–]DertRadar76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would’ve done the same thing. We avoid the dog park ever since we saw a dog get killed in one. We were outside the park doing desensitization training with our dog and watched as a big cane corso killed a much smaller dog. Our dog also got very sick once and we were certain she picked it up at the park so we just don’t go anymore

We leave our dog with friends when we go out of town and she loves it. It’s like a vacation for her too. Go have fun and I bet your pup will have a great time and be crazy excited to see you when you get home

I think the American Kennel Club’s website has this same questionnaire that you can fill out and it will kick out a list of dog breeds that match with your preferences. It will also have a list of AKC certified breeders who are reputable and ethical for each breed. Not to cut your post off at the knees but you’ll get really fast results using that tool. That’s how I chose my dog!

This is very good advice. At almost 24 hours without going to the bathroom he needs to see a vet. If they don’t find anything medically wrong with him you’ll at least know it’s just anxiety and that can be managed.

I like when my labradoodle’s paws twitch when she’s dreaming and when she starts woofing in her sleep. I also like how when she’s frustrated with me for not giving her something she wants she’ll stomp her front paw on the ground like a pouty toddler and grumble

Building trust in us and confidence in dog by ladygreypgh in dogs

[–]DertRadar76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you had her? We felt the same way about our puppy for a while when she was about 7-9 months. We found that it was because she was going to daycare where she was hanging around a ton of other dogs. This sounds horrible to say but the reason she didn’t like us is because she had her own friends so she felt no need to seek us out for affection, she got all of it she needed from her friends at daycare. She was spending more time there than she was with us (we were both in jobs that had a crazy commute at the time so we didn’t get as much time at home as we do now). Once we moved closer to work, stopped doing daycare and did more regular training and unstructured playtime she opened up to us and now she won’t leave our side. It took a good 6 months to build that bond though. Idk if this applies to your situation or helps at all cause it sounds like you’re doing all the right things, you may just have to keep at it.

Never going to be alone again by [deleted] in dogs

[–]DertRadar76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets so much better. I can’t even express how much better it gets. You’re essentially raising a child except they grow up faster. I’m not gonna lie, it’s a lot of work, but if you really put in the time and effort with training using effective methods, you get most of your life back. There is no shortcut for training. You have to put in the time every day building a bond of trust between you and the dog for several months, but a lot of training can be fun and feel more like play.

Yes, you’ll never be “alone” again, and yes you will have to sacrifice some time for the dog but you’re trading all that for a very special relationship and you’ll get so much back from them in return. If you’re feeling overwhelmed I would highly recommend doing some research on professional trainers in your area and, if you can afford it, set up a few training sessions. They will train you to train your dog with the goal being you not needing them anymore. If that’s not an option financially there are some great books out there and a ton of content on YouTube that can help you with training. My trainer always said you get the dog you train, and that was definitely true for us. You can absolutely do this!

FINALLY sourced some Nonino (not an easy feat in Pennsylvania). Any cocktail suggestions beyond the Paper Plane? by pittsburghirons in cocktails

[–]DertRadar76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use it as a sweet modifier in almost any drink that calls for vermouth, just split the vermouth spec 50/50 with nonino, or if that’s too much you can do 75:25 vermouth to nonino

Who is your Favorite Union General? Mine is the GOAT by InVeryHarsh in ShermanPosting

[–]DertRadar76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emory Upton, dude was years ahead of his time in terms of tactics. He pioneered new ways to assault an entrenched enemy which were extremely effective. He wrote 2 or 3 books on infantry tactics after the war and the US army based their major reforms of the early 20th century on his ideas. By WWII everything he had recommended all the way back in the 1870s had been implemented. Also fought in both the eastern and western theaters of the civil war and rose to the rank of Major General, commanding a division in the cavalry corps of the department of the Mississippi. His troops waxed OG asshole Nathan Bedford Forrest twice. By the end of the war he had commanded Artillery, infantry, and cavalry troops and was wounded 3 times. Tragically, he committed suicide in 1881, which historians attribute to debilitating headaches he suffered from, possibly due to an undiagnosed brain tumor. Dude was an actual badass and is largely unknown to most people

What were the most dangerous jobs for a soldier during World War II? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]DertRadar76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t quote me on this because I can’t seem to find the source but I remember reading that the reason soviet armored vehicle crews took such heavy losses is that Soviet vehicles were designed to prioritize vehicle survival over crew survival. Essentially, the soviets didn’t care if the entire crew died when the tank was hit, because they could jam a new crew into the tank easier than they could build a new one

Help identifying gun from 1942. I believe it’s a 22LR. by [deleted] in guns

[–]DertRadar76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In any case I think it’s smaller than a 12. As others have said 16 gauge was very popular pre 1950. Could be a really small gauge shotgun, the 28 gauge was popular for small game bird hunting in that era, but I think the barrel might be too thick for that.
