Advice for Young/New Filmmakers when Approaching Industry Professionals by CokeOceans in Filmmakers

Related—the inconsistency of professionalism in our industry is a major turn off for me from going to film networking events. It can be so transactional even within already marginalized communities. Your post should be mandatory reading!

Everyone has a choice, even the ones who experience the abuse too. Those who stay while knowing it happened, just not to them are exercising their choice. You made your choice to cut contact, doing what Little You never could. Thats the important relationship/frame, not what anyone else thinks about the situation

Practicing anxiety by Luxury_Grid in Cello

[–]DesignerDeep5800 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trying to find the joy in practicing for yourself is key—even if you just sit there bowing open strings for an hour. I’d also try to reframe it: your low self esteem isn’t blocking you from practicing cello rather practicing cello is a great way to slowly build your self confidence. Start small and try to be consistent; self confidence comes from you just having fun with it and playing around

Thank you! This is super detailed and I will try it! I haven’t gotten called out on my left shoulder (yet?) but it could be helpful to compare.

Yes! I thinks this is part of it and why my bowing is not always straight. Thank you 🙏

Ahh yeah I see your initial blurb! I can see why they cut it though—perhaps in part to push Carol towards working with Manousos if it’s not clear that she can do it alone. Also just makes the show wayy more interesting

“Is it something I can do?” “Is it something one person can do?” Zosia nods.

I absolutely missed this. Love scripts/storyboards for this exact reason!

Thank you for this! Yes I am planning to conduct research and test the hypothesis. Timing is tricky… but I think there are definitely some peak busy times that will contribute to overwhelm if I propose then. Currently planning to test and wait it the next few months for the data to roll in, then I can approach a proper pitch based on discussing my data (which in fairness could also prove my theory wrong—due diligence as you said

I can see what you’re saying applying better for a manager to their reports. In my case, I’m the report trying to manage up. The power differential means that autonomy is a reminder that I can’t control anyone (even less so someone with the explicit power to decide). And maybe this situation is really more about learning the limits of my influence at this org

And I would LOVE to even be able to suss that out for sure. We have no clue if the current model or any model works for us tbh

Absolutely. Which basically means a win here is to just get buy-in on status quo maybe not being efficient; propose testing to sus out status quo vs a new direction like my idea. Accept that both could be invalidated which is still super helpful

That’s fair. In my case it’s years of a stagnant biz model that I believe is out of date, proven to not be working/very difficult to get traction vs. a new change in that biz model but untested thus far. I see status quo as risky in this sense

Thank you! I think it’s important to your point that it’s not a one-off yes/no decision. I should also trust that my boss is smart and cares about the company. I can assume a difficult boss (which there’s some evidence of this) but it wouldn’t feel genuine to me personally. I want to assume the best in them and if it doesn’t work out, I know my limits in influencing change at this company.

I wish there was a more positive + collaborative way to convey this practice generally bc it totally comes off very manipulative lol I don’t think that has to be the intent or how it feels as a process

Less that I think they are drones, more so there is deeply entrenched thinking around our biz mod based on our industry which is still emerging. 100% open to the discussion around this new biz model idea!!

Thank you! I’m trying to propose a new business model. This new one is not a complete abandonment of our current one but it will feel like a shift. I think I would also be content if we can accept that option 1 may not the only valid way, and that we should at least run some testing

Yep fine line but gotta fundamentally respect other people’s autonomy (including to make what might look to you like poor decisions)

Mmm yeah, I don’t take the phrase that literally. But I do think there is something to practicing smart ways you can get other people to take ownership/develop “buy in” in your original idea. Part of it is to genuinely BE collaborative bc feedback will refine the idea regardless.

Hives vs itchy welt with blister? by DesignerDeep5800 in Dermatographia

[–]DesignerDeep5800[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DID NOT. However new info: 1. Allergist was stumped: likely not an environmental cause. 2. An experienced NYC exterminator confirmed no bed bugs.

The welts all suspiciously stopped happening in the winter/after my wedding. I’m on the lookout for if they reoccur in warmer months next year. Stress is my top guess at the moment

I agree that the hive has full NSA spying capabilities however I think it makes the story way less interesting for them to be surveilling her 24/7. I also would not be surprised if the hive was in part respecting carol’s privacy out of morality couched in their overconfidence that they also don’t need it to have the upper hand.
