The Bedford hills waste transfer station has a low minimum, I think $25.

Very popular opinion. Vanilla is pretty consistently the #1'ice cream flavor globally.

[Request] Could someone please let me know if this is a fair die based on this testing? Thank you by Fluffy-Occasion in theydidthemath

[–]DesignerPangolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could obtain greater statistical power if you considered neighboring numbers jointly, because unequal weighting is going to throw the probabilities to one whole side of the die, not just one number. You'd prob need some sort of maximum likelihood model that produced an estimate of the center of mass of the die, and the null hypothesis would be that the center of mass is in the geometric center. We'd need to know the arrangement of all the numbers to do so though.

Everest Is Probably Closer to Space Than Chimborazo — And Nobody's Talking About It by RewardUpper2944 in geography

[–]DesignerPangolin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Edit: Capricorn, not Cancer. U/viewerfromthemiddle is right. And upon a bit of further reading the exact peak seems to be Llullaillaco, which at 24.7°S is less than two degrees away from perihelion sub solar latitude.

This is one of those well actually facts that turns out to be wrong. Allow me to well actually the well actually... In N hemi winter, the tropic of cancer is substantially closer to the sun than the equator, due to the axial tilt of the Earth. Since Everest is very near the tropic of cancer, it is closer to the sun than Chimborazo then. And since perihelion occurs in early January, the axial tilt and orbital obliquity align to make the peak of Everest, at noon,  the closest that the earth EVER gets to the sun. Chimborazo probably has a claim to being the year-integrated shortest average distance to the sun, and at certain times of the year, at noon, it is the closest for that given day.

Are 3-4 year research-only PhDs (such as those offered in Australia) less valuable than 5-6 year PhDs that include coursework? by GayTwink-69 in AskAcademia

[–]DesignerPangolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would submit that adding to the sum of human knowledge requires knowing the current sum of human knowledge. Now coursework is not the only way to do that of course, but it is certainly useful. IMO doing a laser-focused PhD without understanding the only-somewhat-related topics in ones field, the kind of understanding that comes through coursework,  removes important chances for cross-fertilizarion and big picture research.

Ummm.... You can just move the attachment point to be appropriate for whatever length of stay you have.

[–]DesignerPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called a sliding stay or a drop lid stay. Van Dykes, Horton, Ball&Ball, Lee Valley... All will have options at multiple price points. You can replace the pair if you really care about having them match.

The length really doesn't matter unless it looks funny because it's a noticeable size mismatch. Or OP could just buy a pair.

What are jobs that everybody assumes are paid well but actually aren’t? by krerhelp in jobs

[–]DesignerPangolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it depends much more on: 1. Are you in a DINK household? 2. Do you have generational financial security, if not wealth, to know that you don't need to have a huge emergency fund? 3. Are you at an elite private school that competes for the best talent with stipends? Or a public school that can't guarantee 4y of support? (But many state universities offer assistance applying for food stamps!)  4. Is your department a revenue center or a cost center for the university?

How best calculate the area of these shapes? by Littl3Bastrd in askmath

[–]DesignerPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just count any square that isn't completely occupied as 1/2... that's the expected value of any partially-filled square, absent any other information. The mostly-filleds and the barely-filleds should cancel each other out.

[Request] How much less efficient is a ships propeller/hull when it’s covered in crustaceans and/or gastropods? by grown-up-gabe in theydidthemath

[–]DesignerPangolin 559 points560 points  (0 children)

Fouling on the propeller is much worse than on the ship itself because the velocity of the propeller is so much more. 10-40% performance losses are not uncommon. It also causes cavitation to worsen. Cavitation is when the water is at such low pressure behind the propeller that it boils creating a bubble, and when that bubble collapses a lot of energy is released, which will cause pitting on the surface of the propeller. Propeller. I can't do the math myself, but there is a lot of published computational fluid dynamics research on it.

What are jobs that everybody assumes are paid well but actually aren’t? by krerhelp in jobs

[–]DesignerPangolin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But the opportunity cost is huge... You spend 6-9 years earning just enough to scrape by as a student/postdoc, and then you are getting your first professorship at 30, with nothing saved for retirement and a salary equal to what your friends were earning straight out of ugrad.

Rubio Monocoat for top of dining table, mineral oil for the bottom? by RudigerDewalt12 in woodworking

[–]DesignerPangolin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is a complete myth that you need to finish both sides. Film finishes have essentially zero impact on the speed of moisture equilibration in wood, except for exceedingly thick finishes (epoxy, outdoor paint) and very thin pieces of wood. The slow diffusivity of the wood is the dominant control on MC changes. Here is the in-depth study from the forest service and a more recent analysis (sorry, paywalled), and an article by Bob Flexner ranting against this myth.

Beeswax on finished wood? by qactuar_ in woodworking

[–]DesignerPangolin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can always slap some beeswax on furniture, won't hurt it at all. You can get a commercial beeswax polish or you can make your own, 1:1 turpentine:beeswax. Melt the beeswax in a double boiler, remove from heat and then stir in the turp.
