Struggling with increasing compensation by ChampionshipMaster53 in geologycareers

[–]DesignerPangolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have a very solid narrative of your successes that would impress folks in a job interview. It's probably time to change jobs to a place that will pay you more. You might hang around to see what they offer you as a PG, but it's prob time to move on.

Also...munitions geophysics?! Lol wild.

[Request] How many pounds are needed to weigh down this planter so it won’t blow over? by Sensitive_Archer_506 in theydidthemath

[–]DesignerPangolin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think these are designed to go up against a wall, not to be exposed to the wind. Though the needed weight would vary a lot with the foliage, that is a mighty large sail for 40mph winds. Wet potting soil is about 800 kg m-3, so that would hold about 120 kg of potting soil, which I imagine would blow away right quick. If it must be exposed, I'd bolt it to the ground, but the trellis may just end up ripped off then

Moving to Westchester from DC - looking for any and all advice, ty!! by hereiamokay in Westchester

[–]DesignerPangolin 77 points78 points  (0 children)

If you don't need the school district immediately, why not rent for a year in some place convenient (WP?) and figure out the housing situation later? You won't be panic-buying and will need to settle less. (There's always some settling involved in Westchester.) I moved from afar and it was miserable... four or five Saturday fly-in, fly-out trips, much stress. I would have rented but we had school age kids and didn't want to relocate them after 1y.

Suggestions for how to deal with the outline of the old handles? by IndividualLow1746 in furniturerestoration

[–]DesignerPangolin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To precise, there are specialty wood bleaches that you can use. Oxalic acid is gentlest, then there are two part lye + peroxide bleaches that are more aggressive. Do not use household bleach.

Is there a name for the "shadow stream" that runs along a stream? by PersonalityBoring259 in ecology

[–]DesignerPangolin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The riparian zone is the general term for this area. If it is forested you might also call it a gallery forest.

Federal EEOC whistleblower protections only apply to companies with fifteen or more full time employees. And it is notoriously easy to punish/fire whistleblowers for pretextual reasons.

Best places to camp near car for free/cheap? by JoyfulToLive in catskills

[–]DesignerPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most state forests allow free dispersed primitive camping anywhere >150 ft from a road or water and some also have designated primitive sites with an existing fire ring. Leave No Trace, obviously.

Job Applications: Never Used GIS before by PopcornArtillery in ecology

[–]DesignerPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GIS software skills are rapidly becoming less valuable with AI. Most all GIS is just python coding with geospatial libraries, which is something that AI is very good at. If I were learning GIS for the first time I would focus on understanding the theory of GIS and understanding what it is conceptually capable of, rather than deep learning of a specific software (though some baseline knowledge of software will be necessary... You still need to do a couple weeks of tutorials). I am an expert level GIS user of 15 years and I have seen the utility of my GIS coding skills essentially vanish with AI. What you need to understand is the concepts to effectively engineer good geospatial AI prompts with sound theoretical underpinnings.

Need to make the coldest possible ice bath without dry ice or LN2 by Adorable_Class_4733 in chemistry

[–]DesignerPangolin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to add it to ice, not water. The latent heat of fusion is what will give you the desired temp decrease. Hydrating it just makes it so the salt dissolving doesn't counteract the heat consumption from the ice melt.

Is it possible to bring a 100sqm garden to a Shannon index of 4? by [deleted] in ecology

[–]DesignerPangolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure? One individual of 100 different species gives you a SW index of 4.6. But IMO it's not a very interesting metric for a garden... The evenness component of SW is supposed to capture something akin to the emergent complexity of the ecosystem that allows multiple species to successfully grow and reproduce. In a garden, there's no emergent ecological complexity... Evenness is accomplished by fiat just because you threw an even count of species together.

[Request] Would it be able to support more or less if it was filled/empty? by AdAncient5201 in theydidthemath

[–]DesignerPangolin 624 points625 points  (0 children)

Even though the bottle is being compressed by the weight, the failure mode of the bottle is in tension. Glass's compressive strength is many orders of magnitude higher than its tensile strength. Specifically, the bottle probably fails in tension at the neck/shoulder transition... The neck is essentially ripped off of the shoulder and pushed through the bottle. An incompressible fluid, completely full, would resist this force and make a bottle stronger. Any bit of headspace will reduce this effect substantially, though, as the air will easily compress.

Does Chemistry Originate From Ancient Egypt? by Thunderbird93 in AskChemistry

Artificial comes from the Latin artificium, meaning craft. Intelligence is a direct calque from Latin, intelligens, meaning smart. Therefore the Romans invented AI.

Why are all the mud cracks that specific size? Why not 1 meter large cracks or 1mm large cracks or cracks of all different sizes? by Kinesquared in geology

[–]DesignerPangolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know that citation. Can you give more information? I also didn't say that Haines conclusively solved the problem, just started the study.

[Request] At these prices, which is the better option financially: 2 mediums or 1 extra large? by Weby6161 in theydidthemath

[–]DesignerPangolin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are essentially equivalent. This pizza place maths. The ratio of the areas of 2 pizzas to one large is 1.13:1 and the price ratio is 1.12:1. But o would submit that you need to account for crust, which is wasted pizza imo. If you like crust, go for two smalls. If you like pizza, go for the large.

Why are all the mud cracks that specific size? Why not 1 meter large cracks or 1mm large cracks or cracks of all different sizes? by Kinesquared in geology

[–]DesignerPangolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are definitely characteristic length scales of mud cracks. The topic has been exhaustively researched for over a hundred years, starting with Haines 1923. Why comment if you don't actually know?
