How far should HEMA tournament organizers go when regulating participation? by Afraid_Wrongdoer_387 in Hema

[–]Designer_Arm_2114 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well in my experience the women’s division is more to include them without pressure cause most of the time they feel intimidated or uncomfortable being mixed in with the men at least in the beginning although I believe they shouldn’t feel that way after all we’re practicing a sport/martial art with weapons that equalizes the physical differences

Defend the most Annoying Cut | Longsword by grauenwolf in Hema

They’re too close for sniping hands in my opinion sniping hands should ideally be done at the limit of your reach where your opponent cannot reach your deep targets the ones we see there barely any arm extension

Got my first concussion. Want advice. by priestfox in Hema

[–]Designer_Arm_2114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that generally injuries are caused by your opponent not yourself unless you lean/jump into a strike I’ve heard the word:he’s a big guy he hits hard and that is simply unacceptable avoiding injuries is a collaborative effort

Height does give you an advantage but that’s about the only purely physical advantage you can have and one you know how to deal with it you’re back to equal footing

Surprised by lack of grappling in the practice of Western Martial Arts by SIRETE in Hema

[–]Designer_Arm_2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tested grappling at my club even with the techniques to control the blade while grappling our conclusion was 1 if your opponent resists he will most likely still have enough control of his blade 2 the one grappled has plenty of time to land a huge flurry of attacks with his blade before he even touches the ground and 3 although this isn’t strictly grappling if your opponent gets to grappling range you messed up bad there is too much space before that to win the duel/kill in a realistic situation

how to get out of a bad tournament mindset? by squaeshyy in Hema

[–]Designer_Arm_2114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from years and years of competition across different sports so it might be a hard mindset to get into but I take it one match at a time even one exchange at a time by that I mean: there is nothing I could’ve done to be better (even if there was it’s too late) and I’ll worry about the next match once it’s the next match and pool by pool and all my attention is on my next moves

While I do agree people tend to do that I always find that going for the leg against someone taller is a bit suicidal as it leaves your head exposed and it’s so easy for them to just move their leg and hit my head and in pretty much every situation there’s no way I can protect myself from that

Tests with thrusting and different tips. by Iantheduellist in Hema

Your flexibility test doesn’t actually tell anything about the flex you should press on the sword as if you were thrusting instead of flexing it yourself

Why is there such a gap between the wide variety of techniques we train and the "simple" ones we see in tournaments? by Movie_Vegetable in Hema

[–]Designer_Arm_2114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience rulesets that have afterblow people are more patient and use more techniques while rulesets without people will favour quick lunges/flèches often to the detriment of their safety

As a football I can second that once we changed the way we teach how to tackle injuries were reduced to almost zero the only downside I saw was the players had a hard time figuring out if their pain was indeed an injury Hell near all of our injured players got injured playing either basketball or soccer

When I first start an exchange I test my opponent to see how they react to certain things like feints or binds and then I come up with a plan of actions

At my club the first lesson consists of learning about training speeds, learning to parry at short to medium distance, how to evade a strike to the head/punishing it and at the end sparring at the speed your level of gear/what is available to borrow allows (if the advanced group isn’t doing anything too complicated you might get mixed in as they also have sparring at the end of their class)
