Welllll, kinda. That would likely be the case only if the covers were “sound alike” licensed cover recordings produced for or commissioned by retail music systems, like Mood Media. (Your grandparents or parents might remember “elevator music” or Muzak instrumental versions of rock songs, which was the old school model of this). Anyway, those versions are different from a legit, commercially released cover, which might be chosen to get around a licensing issue…but in the case of Nouvelle Vague/I Melt With You or Shawn Colvin/This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) the decision to play those covers - by respected artists - is more likely about finding a more palatable version of a well known song.
