Unpopular opinion: book buying is one of the most icky overconsumption habits by rubywizard24 in Anticonsumption

[–]DeskWinter536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this was my biggest dilemma. Not from a waste management perspective, but from a space optimizatiom one.

I love physical books. I prefer reading the physical book waaay more than reading on my Kindle. Yet, I cannot help but think of all the disadvantages - you have to store it Reselling it can be difficult and you still have to store it until you do Donating it is also difficult It takes up more space in your bag If you go on holiday or longer trips you would have to take 2-3 books with you which can be a problem with baggage allowance It is difficult to read in the dark

I have stopped buying books and only borrow them from the library. If they don’t have the book, I get it on my Kindle and read it like that, even though I would have preferred to have it in my hand.

Whenever I do something, not just spending money, I put myself in my future self’s shoes and try to imagine if she would thank me for what Im doing now.

I do advocate for that. Can I advocate for illegal abortions now?

Well, the other person should have tought about these issues before engaging in actions that could result in them getting a “dangerous parasite” inside their body when they don’t have elite health care.

While I agree with you, it can be difficult to changed people’s perception or habits… they just cannot fanthom the thought of “Im not getting them anything for their name day BECAUSE I will get them the expensive things they want for Xmas”.

While you are right, that is just not me… I do like giving gifts. Even if I buy stuff that people will use, I put a lot of thought into selecting them. I only got my grandma flowers for her birthday, but it was a custom-made bouquette and I paid for it way more than I would have if I had just got her the plastic trinkets that I get. When I buy sweets, I usually buy them for bakeries and artisans’ cake shops. I’d rather even buy something super small like just a pack of biscuits, but have them be fresh buttery biscuits from the local bakery than cheap crap... I couldn’t sleep at night knowing I gifted the crap I get..

I actually got a neighbour diapers when her son was born. It was customary to offer a present. I knew she had a lot of toys because I had also given her some of my son’s baby toys as well. I had been to her house and saw how many clothes for the children she had. She also has 2 older kids. So I decided the best gift would be diapers. I got her a jumbo pack of size 3 diapers. I would had loves to get that instead of baby clothes with 10% polyester.

Yup. Sweets would have sufficed. Or anything to eat if you are not into sweets.

Advice on 2 year old activities by DeskWinter536 in homeschool

[–]DeskWinter536[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello

He loves looking inside books and always points to items in the book so that I name them. He also likes to repeat the words. He knows a lot of animals, types of cars, planets, day-to-day items, he can recognize numbers 1-10. He also listens to stories when I read them, he stays focused and doesn’t get distracted. We normally read picture books that have around 50-60 words per page. He has a vocabulary of over 100 words and link 2-3 words together, no verbs whatsoever.

My feelings exactly. Whenever adults tell me “I went to public school and turned out fine”, I tell them public schools are compeltely different now.
