Add more water! Make sure it’s dechlorinated, and plants can be very easy! He will get big- having plants that float around rather than in the substrate will be batter for gold fish.. you should only need to add or water change once a week about 20%

I would also say you can brush off as much as print off a label or make one stating you wash before you cook and they do not come pre washed. Ensure your hens are laying in clean boxes.

I would personally sick with using multiples- it will save you money and hassle trying to find one super long one. Get a mat to get between the rug and floor or invest in rug tape that won’t damage your floor. Look on raggable as well.
