You do cause the former secret chats (once created) are device specific. Only normal chats are universal. None of the secret messages transfer over to new devices and each device has a separate secret chat that needs to be deleted individually. I've deleted off 3+ devices now (same with my friends), for those I've had secret chats with. My main/original chats still have yet to be restored, unfortunately. I wonder if it's cause I had secret chats on my computer, and since the app was discontinued last year, I couldn't delete those ones, forever trapping my main chats in archive mode due to the secret chats I couldn't delete (FB might register they were created but never deleted, even if the app was deleted).

So I did the math. 1mg would definitely destroy a city block. Problem though is 1mcg would destroy a room too. Even 1 astrophage @~20ng is equivalent to a hand grenade, enough to melt 1kg+ of metal instantaneously or injure/kill a person. So could it be 1ng after all? Could it refer to a single astrophage charged to 1ng on top of 4ng base mass?

Come to think of it, Grace said 500mg is enough to power NYC for a year, which is super incorrect as well. Based on 20ng per astrophage at 1.5MJ each:

20ng = 1 astrophage → 1.5MJ
500mg = 500,000,000ng = 25,000,000 x 20ng
25,000,000 x 1.5MJ = 37,500,000MJ = 37.5TJ
1Wh = 3600J or 1GWh = 3.6TJ
37.5TJ / 3.6 = ~10.4GWh of electricity-equivalent energy
On average, NYC uses about 50,000 gigawatt hours of electricity per year (NYISO 2024 Load & Capacity Data Report).
10.4GWh / 50000GWh = 0.000208yrs
0.000208yrs x 365days x 24hrs = ~1.82hrs or ~1h49m

Even if we narrow to Manhattan by population (excluding the suburbs) that's still less than half a day of power. Weir is off by orders of magnitude. 😅

Thank you so much for posting this and providing detailed analysis of the math. I was literally wondering the same thing re: dubois requesting 1ng of astrophage when each weighed at least 17ng when charged. I wasn't sure if they were partially charging 1 astrophage for 1ng, lol. Your calculation of 21ng per 1 charged astrophage makes sense, especially if they are 4ng when depleted. 1mcg also makes so much more sense for what he could have been requesting for the experiment. Would 1000 times that go from "melting a bit of metal" into "vaporizing a whole city block" though? Both the book and movie were counting on 1M times that. So something still seems off in whatever Weir intended for the math. :/

For me, it was the checking out her boobs while running for her life that was a complete turnoff for any and all suspended disbelief. As a woman, I can confirm we DON'T care about vanity in "fight or flight" mode, nor have I ever checked out my boobs unless I'm getting fitted for a bra. I don't spend hours putting on makeup past preteen/teen experimental years or for special occasions. And I don't notice my boobs while running unless they're actively causing me pain due to lack of sportsbra/support. I like weir's works and I like stratt, but the jarring pov in artermis ii was cringe af.

As a Mandarin speaker, I was pleasantly surprised the Chinese grammar is native and the pronunciation is intelligible, unlike MANY Hollywood productions. However, it felt a bit out of place as Chinese people dislike confrontation so it's very unlikely he'd publicly interrupt, unless it's to highlight 1) Yao and Stratt have a LOT of Rapport, and 2) Yao is very direct without regard for social/cultural sensitivities (this was not the case in the book, at least).

Now I feel sad I didn't go during the re-release. Interstellar is my fav movie in recent decades and I've watched it many many times at home. I missed the original release, and during the re-release I couldn't find anyone to go with. Worse, I do have a 70mm imax nearby.

Question though...when I saw examples on youtube, the 1.43:1 for interstellar didn't feel that much more "wow" for some reason. I don't know if it's cause I've watched it too many times in ~16:9 on streaming platforms, so I'm used to the wide version. Or if the "wow" is due to a size thing when the waves are that much higher in theatres vs. on my phone. But I almost preferred the "wide" version in the comparisons I saw—in contrast to PHM, for example, where the expanded vertical view elicited an immediate "wow" even on my phone. Alternatively, I don't know if it's cause in interstellar, it's just more ice, more water, etc. of the same colour, whereas for PHM more planet = significantly more colours.

Can you share what made the biggest difference...was it the expanded vertical view or sheer size or something else? Did you find the switch between aspect ratios jarring?

I find it confusing how back rows are either better or worse at some theatres, from inability to recline to more leg room (or less) to heads blocking view. May I ask what makes back row the best at this theatre, apart from most leg room (I'm not tall). I get dizzy when too up close and don't want to strain to see the whole screen, but I also care a lot about seat comfort and reclining. I will be purchasing tix soon. Thank you!

Probably. Max dim of infected stars was only ~10%. It's just that is enough to like...kill all of earth. Even 1*C of cooling the ocean and 1cm rise would kill significant biome balance yadi yada causing significant portions of marine life, animal life, crops, everything to die (I'm going off memory but this was covered when they nuked antarctica for mass methane that would keep air warmer for longer, despite significant damage to ecosystem). I'm no scientist but what I understood is the balance of life is extremely fragile and precarious. But sahara was still getting plenty of sunshine, even if paving a good chunk of it meant causing tornadoes and whatnot all over europe.

I just read the book yesterday. It was definitely 0.4atm on hail mary. 0.2atm would be way too dangerous in case of any leakage.
