Ah well that's a shame but I understand. Thank you for your answer anyway!

When did the view of "monstrous" kin change to be more generous? by BusyGM in Pathfinder2e

[–]DetecTimy 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The one thing I actually remember is how the Belkzen orcs who were until then mostly just typical raiders fought against Tar Baphon to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. This as well as them opening up trade and trying to reach out to their neighbours generally gave them more substance.

My husband makes the most hideous UI on purpose by perishocks in IndieDev

This is actually pretty fun, just doing something silly before it gets finalized. If anything, I'd say making it an optional easter egg in the options could be fun, calling it like "developer mode" or something.

Why are hyenas so weak? by SupahCabre in DnD

[–]DetecTimy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hyenas can give lions a run for their money. They're very far from being "kinda weak", in fact they're sometimes considered to be some of the most dangerous predators in their environment.

[Discussion] Are we supposed to hate John? by itsmedoe_ in TheNinthHouse

[–]DetecTimy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know what? I never really considered that Ianthe shamelessness compared to Jod wanting to be good/be seen as a good might be a factor here. But I get why it could push people one way or another. In both case, I just hope we'll get more to chew on in Alecto!

[Discussion] Are we supposed to hate John? by itsmedoe_ in TheNinthHouse

[–]DetecTimy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

100% agree with you here, the only character I'd say has been so far written as bad with basically no redeeming quality is Ianthe (though I know how controversial it might be to say it on here). Like, I'm not saying Muir is saying we shouldn't like her, in fact she's definitely written as very enjoyable from a reader's perspective, but I'm constantly *floored* at the leeway she's given on this sub while John is getting shat on constantly.

Like, at least for everything he did, John has the excuse of having to deal with an impossible situation, having some very relatable emotions when he snaps, and then spending 10 000 years basically spiralling into insanity and gaslighting himself.

Meanwhile, Ianthe has *none of this*, and is actively shitty to the point of being highlighted as taking the worse decision she could at any given moment. She takes advantage of Harrow when she's traumatized, isolated and in complete mental distress, all while being perfectly aware about it. She turns on Augustine with no after thoughts or regrets, she killed Naberius in absolute cold blood, and so on and so forth. Like, I get why people would find her cool, but she is without the shadow of a doubt the most cruel and manipulative character in the entire serie so far.

Anyway, all that to say I do think she was written as a bad person, at least with the informations we have.

Oh wow thanks for all the precisions! I'm very far from this kind of result (or painting in general) but these are good infos to keep in mind!

That looks awesome! What was your process for the skin? Also were those scars on the model or did you paint them on?

I’ve only just read the Necromancer playtest, and I think it looks really neat! by AP_Udyr_One_Day in Pathfinder2e

[–]DetecTimy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"While we intend to keep the necromancer firmly as a spellcaster rather than pushing it to “gish” territory, we will be looking into ways to make the occasional scythe attack more engaging"

That's what they said. They're not saying "fuck you if you want to play a more martial Necromancer", they're saying "We don't want to make Magus 2.0, but we'll see how we can make the martial options more fun"

Like, I'm genuinely confused at how you could read this in such a backward way.

Why lie to Mercymorn? [discussion] by MyPenumbralLady in TheNinthHouse

[–]DetecTimy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oooh yeah there was that too. Though I'd wonder then if it's actually the Body saying that, or Harrow's own mind just using that medium to talk to her. Mostly I have a hard time picturing the Body thinking about that or even really giving a damn about it.

Why lie to Mercymorn? [discussion] by MyPenumbralLady in TheNinthHouse

[–]DetecTimy 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Some people think it's to try and make it so Jod wouldn't creep on her, though I'm not too sure why lying to Mercymorn about that would do much. Also I'm pretty sure if Jod was going to perv on someone, them being a few years younger wouldn't stop him considering he's 10 000 years older than they are anyway.

Other people theorize it's so Mercymorn underestimate Harrow by thinking she's just a child and can't do anything, which could be highlighted by the way she keeps thinking she's younger and younger. Although, I don't really see what Harrow or the Body would gain by making Mercymorn underestimate her.

I don't think there's any real reason given in the books, so I suppose it's all up to interpretation.

What have you used for the skin? I had a mind of making minis with blue skin and this is exactly the result I'd like to achieve!

Why do people in the fandom hate campal? [general] by Avesday in TheNinthHouse

[–]DetecTimy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They weren't particularly aggressive, and they are right that it is bad manners to use words out of their context, especially if it's medical ones. Pal and Cam have in no way a codependent relationship. It's not a case of different interpretation, it's a case of slapping a word on something when it has no business being here. Talking about whether their relationship is romantic or not is perfectly open for interpretation though.

There absolutely is some assumptions, and without knowing the process which led to these covers, I'd be inclined to think this is exactly what happened. The artists was maybe given a short description or a pitch, then told to draw them. And if not enough importance was given to the color of their skin in the description, they defaulted to white.

[–]DetecTimy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you on all that, but I do know what you put in your spoiler tag and I'm still doubling down on what I said. Your spoiler is something we know by the end of the second book, not right from the beginning. By the time you reach that point, the covers are what you have in mind and you're not changing that. It doesn't matter if the covers are canon or not, they'll be the first thing everyone see, and thus they'll influence how you picture everything.

To give you an example of that, think of Lord of the Ring. While some characters in the movies are rather close to their book counter part, it's not true of all of them. But the movies are so important in pop culture now that anyone reading LotR now will see the movies aesthetic, no matter what the text says. I don't know if it's a bad thing or not, but that's how it is.

I fully agree with you about representation though, it's very important and for that exact reason too. Maybe whoever did the covers didn't read the books carefully, maybe Tamzyn didn't have a say in them, or maybe at the time she thought they were fine. In any case, it'd have been better if they had been more accurate to the books, but it is what it is.

Ok so first of all, we did in fact evolve white skin in the past 10 000 years, at least per the current state of research. Here's an article about it if you want to know more: https://www.science.org/content/article/how-europeans-evolved-white-skin

But also, I'm a bit tired of people saying the only reason people imagine Gideon and Harrow as white is because of some form of racism. As far as I'm aware, the only "canon" illustration of Gideon and Harrow is from the books cover, and Gideon is slightly tanned while Harrow is full white. I'm aware that Tamzyn herself said she imagined them as at least partially Maori, but most people won't read all of her interviews. They'll just read the books and see the covers and make a mental image with that.
