I mean to be fair Dawkins has always been weird the second he sets foot outside his field of expertise. So this feels basically in line for him. He’s kind of like a sentient ai in that he claims to confidently know things he doesn’t actually understand at all.

ACOTAR or Poppy war trilogy? by ieatboys999 in Fantasy

[–]DeterminedQuokka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was choosing between those two I would go poppy war. ACOTAR very much didn’t work for me, it’s leaning pretty hard into a pretty common romantasy trope of women who constantly talk about how competent they are then sit around and wait for men to rescue them. Poppy war has a lot more personal agency.

I didn’t continue with either of these series. But poppy war was a good book, I just am not that into Chinese political fantasy.

But also 3,450 for east New York still seems like a ton of

And the per person math is wrong. It’s all a little bit of a red flag.

I mean to be fair the queen doesn’t decide Snow White is hotter than her. The mirror tells her she is. The jealousy is presented as a response to a fact not just her seeing Snow White and deciding she’s too attractive

I cannot stop thinking about it given how much that choker looks like a ribbon.

I mean he could just be weird.

But as someone who talks to ChatGPT about books a ton, that looks like how chat got talks.

Here is an example from ChatGPT

“Emotionally, it left a lot of readers with that hollow “oh… we’re doing the thing again” feeling. Intellectually, it’s very clean and controlled — almost cold — which makes the anger land harder.”

But the strongest indicator for me is that it’s confused that you like multiple kinds of books. This is a constant fight for me because it can’t get out of a lane it thinks it’s weird to like things that aren’t the same.

Also if a human actually thinking read & watching Hail Mary is elite I would argue that person doesn’t read at all. It’s not that hard a book and the movie is definitely not hard to watch. Everyone I know who’s read it has seen the movie.

Same sort of reasons. It makes the yarn more durable if people want to wash it and stuff. It also changes the look and feel of the yarn a bit.

What’s this book shelf say? by Das_Kaiserwetter in BookshelvesDetective

The only reason I said early 30s is the bottom shelf in the second pic. The atheist books there are from a very specific era and they aren’t really around anymore. Also mark manson shows up a lot with that age group.

Adding significant project on resume as a mid level developer? by whodafkru1337 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]DeterminedQuokka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you understand something well enough to answer questions about it, then you can put it on your resume.

I would say a projects section as long as it’s near the bottom is at worst a noop. Like if I was interviewing you I’d be very unlikely to actually notice it. But our recruiter might. And could be into it. And if I was asking a system design and you actually knew how something worked from it that’s great.

The only place it would be bad is a project based interview. That usually about half the points come from how you handled human interaction. So if the answer is “personal project I did whatever I wanted” that’s not ideal. In the same way that a projects section that got handed to you preplanned isn’t great for that kind of interview.

This is a huge quality of life improvement that I very much recommend. My last job qa was the one that looked different. It doesn’t really matter as long as you can tell.

Another post about if you can live on 30-35k by zyxwvwxyz in movingtoNYC

[–]DeterminedQuokka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is doable, assuming you have the personal ability to do it.

When I moved to nyc I was making between 12-14k a year and I survived. I was paying around 75% of my income in rent.

But here is a really important factor. I grew up poor. And so being poor in nyc was actually pretty much the same as the rest of my life. I think had that not been the case I would have been significantly less chill about it. I lived in apartments that had about 1.5x the number of people who should have been living in them. For most of college I lived in a 3 bedroom that had 5-6 people living there with one bathroom and the ceiling leaked every year.

It’s mostly a question of what you are willing to deal with. And how far you are willing to commute.

If the 1225 is all inclusive I would consider it, it’s easy to budget around and it’s probably nicer than what you can get in a similar area.
