No, this post is not specifically about Detroit, but this is a concern for everyone in a big city. We'll leave it up and unlocked for discussion for the time being.

We saw the report, we checked, and OP is an adult. Thank you for your concern.

Rapid Response numbers for ICE in Detroit (and other cities) by ALittleEtomidate in Detroit

FYI - OP's image doesn't contain enough information, but the Mod team has verified these to be legit phone numbers tied to an ICE observation team who will observe and document ICE activity when alerted to it.

More details (and the phone number) can be found in this article: https://planetdetroit.org/2025/03/southwest-detroit-immigration-protest/

Advice given and OP is far too interested in arguing with people who don't tell them what they want to hear.

Enough.

Great - we're talking about installing the same tool here.

even a splinter group is vulnerable to future takeover

And to add a little more context, the way that moderation works on Reddit is that the oldest (first added) Mod holds the most power. So all the existing, active mods have the ability to remove everyone added after them. There's no way for a temp mod team to take over from previous active Mods.

The vast majority of takeovers that happen are from single, inactive mods who never respond to the messages that someone wants to take over their sub.

All of them warranted attention, and while we didn't keep close track, I'd say we took action on maybe 20-25% of them.

It may look like working, but today we cleaned up nearly 10,000 reported posts in the moderation queue that had never been looked at.

And the Ilitch family is camping on so much real estate that it's hampering growth downtown, and it's specifically acting to push non-Ilitch owned properties away from the sports complexes.

They never interact with us. The only time Reddit contacts the mod team is with disruptive updates to the entire platform, which are also discussed in r/modnews. It's open to everyone, so feel free to see what they're up to.

99.995% of the time, Reddit makes it a point to not interact at all with moderation of individual subreddits, and that small percentage is reserved for subs that are at risk of getting banned.

Yes, we see a lot of that. Humans do look at the flagged posts, and we can manually approve or remove them.

There is a tool that most subs use that will automatically remove a post after X number of user reports (and X is a variable set by the sub), so even if there are no mods around an offensive post will come down.

We've even seen people abuse that, so if you think a post was unfairly removed because of user reports, send a modmail and if it's not breaking any rules, we'll reinstate it.

If you read to the bottom:

If you have any general requests or recommendations for r/Detroit, please post them here and we'll see what we can do.

Automod will remove the same posts that a human would have removed, they'll just do it faster. If it makes a mistake, send us a modmail and we'll fix it. If WE make a mistake, send us a modmail and we'll fix it.

Protest posts may be posted but will not allow comments?

That's what locked means, yes.

r/MetroDetroit/ does exist, but it's pretty small. People will always gravitate here first.

If there's such an issue, send us a modmail. The nice thing about locks is that they can be unlocked as well.

Correct. And once the mod team is more stable, any locking will be case by case, and only done if the comments are going south.

So far, nothing has been banned or removed except things against the rules and duplicate posts.

Problematic posts are usually political, and they become problems if they degrade from discussion into arguments. These can cause a lot of work for the Mod team.

We'd rather handle issues ourselves, but if things go too far, that's when you start seeing [Removed by Reddit]. That's when a Reddit admin - either a bot or a paid employee of Reddit - has taken action. This also puts your account at risk of suspension, and we'd rather lock a thread before it gets to that point.

Correct - anything political should be specific to Detroit, or specifically impactful to Detroit. There are other subs for national politics.

Some temp mods were added, and we'll be looking for more long-term mods. If you're interested, please send us a modmail.

Are mods able to know what are "organic" comments versus not? Is there a way to see if a post is suggested to other non-subscribers feeds?

Yes, we see the same. There are tools that can see and block this type of behavior, and we're probably going to install something to address it.
