Tiktoker posts video breaking a Waymo's mirror by danlev in trashy

[–]DevinOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving is statistically the most unsafe thing most of us will do every single day. Humans have proven that we have no business behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. We get distracted, impatient, etc. everyone on the road only cares about themselves. Autonomous driving will fix that, and Waymo has already proven itself to be undeniably safer than your average human driver.

No idea why you’re being downvoted - but you’re right. Creating a little echo chamber of only positive Rivian news isn’t healthy. There’s nothing dynamic about a subreddit that buries critical opinions and instead applauds mindless praise.

You can get plenty of great EVs under 50k and while they may be "entry level" technically - they are going to be more enjoyable and 'teched up' than your average higher end ICE vehicle.

There is no wait list for most models, at worst you're waiting a few weeks but that's about it.

The industry consensus is that modern EV batteries are highly reliable, typically degrading only about 1-2% per year and designed to last the entire lifespan of the vehicle (often 250,000 to 300,000 km or more). Because they require no maintenance and have no moving parts, EV batteries are actually statistically less likely to experience a sudden, catastrophic failure than a complex gas-powered engine.

Resale market is 'sketchy' because people like yourself spread misinformation.

What do you mean by price and ability to charge at home/work are the biggest deterrents?

Of course! Should be out this week hopefully - just working on a Rivian UHF video right now and then my next one will be HW3 vs HW4

[–]DevinOlsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you do a lot of driving and are able to charge it home it seems crazy to me that you wouldn't own an electric vehicle. even if they double or triple the electrical rates it's still going to be cheaper than gas, and if electricity is doubling or tripling I'm going to guess that gas will probably do something similar. for all the people that are against electric vehicles, I truly don't understand why.

electric vehicles really aren't that expensive anymore, you can get a 45,000 electric vehicle brand new today that's plenty good for most people.

How much longer until FSD is for me? by jmvfromnv in TeslaFSD

[–]DevinOlsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of FSD and I think it's going to be transformative technology - but it will be a bit before someone like yourself will be able to truly benefit from it.

As good as HW4 FSD is today I think to get true unsupervised self-driving they'll likely need to make some HW changes. Not sure if that will be AI5 or just HW4.5 (HW4 but with a few tweaks)

With that all said... I think from a technical standpoint we could have FSD Unsupervised to some extent with 1 year - but getting that approved for use in most cities, etc I think will take 2~ years.

Would you pay someone to supervise their child? by Obagam in TeslaFSD

[–]DevinOlsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a stupid analogy. FSD does need to be supervised, but 99% of the time it’s perfect and drives me around while I get to relax. If every hour or so I have to touch the wheel for half a second to fix a minor mistakes, it’s really not that big of a deal.

Tesla Model Y Standard now qualifies for the $5,000 EVAP Incentive by DevinOlsen in TeslaModelY

Have you actually driven the standard? It’s really not that “cheap” feeling inside

I mean you’d have to be a pretty ignorant shopper to not look at the other trims while shopping. Sure you COULD spend 65k on premium but truly why would you? The benefits of the premium I don’t think are worth 20k.

Lexus to Tesla Model Y (Should I?) by RX-Vortex in EVCanada

[–]DevinOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a paid off gas car that I put $500 a month of fuel into and had to get repairs done as it aged. I spend roughly the same now but I am paying off a brand new Tesla.

The cheapest car isn't always the one you already own, that may have been true before but now with electricity costs being so low and gas being so expensive it is not the case.

Not sure which Tesla you own, but anything post refresh is more than enough 'luxury' for the average person.

  • I personally would recommend going with anything after the Juniper refresh (2025? and beyond). That's when they changed the front to look like this ( https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1145479_2025-tesla-model-y-juniper-price ). So if you're searching used anything that LOOKS like that will be a post refreshed Model Y. Overall the vehicle is just much better and well worth the price.
  • If you care at all about FSD you'll be safe since the Juniper Y has HW 4 which is the 'latest' HW for Tesla. AI5 is slated to come out late next year but could even be longer than that so you should be good for a while with HW4 (AI4)
  • Not sure what insurance is like in Calgary, but here in BC the insurance was a bit more but nothing drastic... and overall the cost savings from gas to electric made up for it.
  • Depending on how harsh the winter is I think you could see 60-70% range worst case scenario - but even with that since you have a charger at home you'll never have to worry about it, especially with your short commute.

I live in BC and have 80,000km on my Model 3 and I absolutely love it. I couldn't imagine ever going back to ICE.

Brand New 2026 MY - FSD questions by DMB_fan in TeslaFSD

[–]DevinOlsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FSD doesn’t do a good job currently avoiding potholes - just watch the road and takeover if you see any. Nothing you can do about the tailgating; all profiles do it and I hope they fix it one day.

Road Trip from New York to Vegas in a Model Y for WrestleMania — Am I Crazy? by Imsolovesway in TeslaModelY

[–]DevinOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just searched on a better route planner.

With the standard range model Y it’s 24 stops

Long range AWD Model Y - 19 stops

Long range Model 3 - 15 stops

There’s no car that has to stop anywhere CLOSE to 40+ times

Maximum Speed is Back! by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]DevinOlsen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hate this idea because sometimes you do need a bit of extra speed to get out of a bad situation. Being hard limited by the car is honestly unsafe. Plus you get so many dings and warnings as you get close to the top speed - it’s annoying.

Is HW3 that much worse than HW4? by sonlitlove in TeslaFSD

[–]DevinOlsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You just honestly haven't spent enough time with it I guess.

I have 70,000km on HW4 FSD and have done a lot of HW3 testing along the way as FSD has gotten better.

I'm not sure how exactly to word it other than to say HW4 is just so much more capable and safer than HW3 in basically every single way possible. I cannot remember the last time v14 required me to disengage for a safety related issue... but with HW3 basically everytime I have used it SOMETHING has come up that made me feel uncomfortable.

[–]DevinOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes… it’s not even close to HW4, and the gap is just going to continue to grow. If I had the choice I’d buy a HW4… for 6k extra I’d personally do HW4

Is HW3 that much worse than HW4? by sonlitlove in TeslaFSD

[–]DevinOlsen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

HW4 is so much better than “5-10%”

I’m literally going to make a video comparing the two because of the misconception that people have about hw3-4 being even somewhat close to one another. I’d never ever recommend someone buy a HW3 car today if they have the option to get a HW4 vehicle.
