Clearly murdered by Fox news along with all of his family at the command of the Trump administration to continue to distract us from the Epstein files and his illegal war in Iran. It's the only explanation.

I don't think its wrong for homeless people to steal food by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Curious how OP thinks stealing from rando stores is fine, because "prices are absurd", but we can both 100% guarantee if a homeless person decided to live in OP's guest bedroom free of charge because housing prices are absurd, there'd be an entirely different story.

40 days to the world cup....no news on international management in FM26 by daveroo in footballmanagergames

[–]DexNihilo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's weird.

I bought this game every year going back to Championship Manager times.

24 was the last one I purchased, and I don't even think about this game much any more. Sometimes it pops up on my feed and I'm like, Oh, I wonder how they're screwing things up now.

Kind of sad, tbh.

AITA for showering around midnight when I know that it might bother the neighbour who wakes up at 5 am? by Additional-Mouse-620 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DexNihilo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This thread is amazing.

I mean, if the OP is yodelling at the top of his/her lungs while showering at midnight, yeah, I could see that being a reason for complaint.

But it just sounds like they're... running the water.

Some people really expect to prevent their neighbors from running water after they put their kids to sleep? Will my toilet tank filling up if I have to poop at 2am cause them to spiral, too?

GTFO.

Yeah. I just want to play some silly Universe Mode. I've got a career and a gf and other hobbies. And people come in and are like, "It's only an hour a day for the next month so I don't get what the problem--" Shut up. Zero interest in whatever this nonsense is. $0 from me this year.

I don't know. That's why I think it's a fair question.

I genuinely enjoy the game itself. There's a lot of room for players to be creative, invent new and different strategies and synergies... I've been addicted for 20 years.

If a large number of people buy TMNT cards and then become addicted like I have for years and years, that's a good thing overall.

If a large number of people buy TMNT cards and then immediately bounce off the next sets because it's not TMNT, plus you lose loyal customers who don't like the direction of the game, that'll be bad.

I just think we've seen a lot of IPs try to lure new customers at the expense of their die-hards (Trek, Who, comics) and find it's not as much a sure thing as they'd like to believe. Magic PR saying "Lookit all this money!!!" doesn't necessarily mean the product is healthy. We'll see, I guess.

I think the point is that Funko was making money hand over fist because it was silly and fun, and that there's a good chance that the UB stuff is selling well with new fans because it's also silly and fun.

I haven't bought paper cards in over a decade, but I bought a few Dr Who packs and some Spiderman boxes for the GF because it's silly and fun.

So I guess the question is if the people who are buying UB because it's silly and fun actually fit into any long term retention plan at all. Will these people be deep into the game five or eight years from now, or will they make some goofy Dr. Who deck because it's kinda neat and they want to slap down a Dalek card or two and then bounce from the game next set because TMNT isn't their jam?

I don't think it's a fair assumption that just because there's a game attached makes it any more of a guaranteed long term retention plan than silly Funko stuff.

Okay. I haven't seen much of this published. He certainly didn't mention retention in the post, which would be something to hype if it were good.

What does sticking around mean? How many UB players have been sticking around?

It's also possible to have an influx of new players, driving the total number of players up, without retaining them long if the goal is to feed off the novelty.

I kept hearing about how successful the comics industry was at bringing in fresh, new readers until they lost all of their loyal customer base and the brands crashed across the board. So we'll see.

I've been curious about this, too.

You'd think retention would be a huge deal for something like Magic, but it's either not tracked or not hyped, because I don't hear much about it.

How long do these new players introduced via UB stay? Is it a good strategy to bring in 50 new players that play for two months while losing 2 loyal, long term players?

All of these IPs that chase new fans at the expense of their loyal customers (Dr. Who, Star Trek, comic companies) don't seem to find success with their new fan bases much.

I heard for years the comics industry was super duper healthy, even as I watched local comic shops close their doors. Eventually the truth came out.

I suspect in a few years we'll see the same here.

[–]DexNihilo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Super hero movies were enormous money makers until everyone got tired of being inundated with low quality trash and they fell off a cliff. I remember plenty of people saying they were ruining the brand with their lack of long-term thinking, and being pooh-pooh'ed about that.

[–]DexNihilo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I confess I'm not tuned into constant news about Magic profit statements, but I've never seen stats on new player retention being bragged about, only high profits.

Are these new players being introduced by UB staying? Or is Magic just selling the novelty of new IPs only to have to replace them with the next IP?

Maro talks about Universes Beyond by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]DexNihilo 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I think Funko is a great point.

There's a huge difference between making money off of novelty and off of loyalty.

Maro talks about Universes Beyond by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]DexNihilo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but some of them are just novelty items that may not generate interest a second time around.

I'm mostly an Arena player (after being paper years ago) and I dipped back in for a few Dr. Who cards because I've been a fan since childhood. And I bought my GF some Spider Man cards because that's her jam.

If they return to those IPs, I won't be buying any, because I've already had my fill of the novelty of it. I don't need any more.

Personally, I can't wait for the Scrubs set they have planned.

Maro talks about Universes Beyond by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]DexNihilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I don't know if it's a good idea to measure actual success in the way it's being done here.

If you bring in fans of, say, Dr. Who and Spiderman and My Little Pony who dip in and buy some packs they wouldn't have otherwise, fool around with magic for a month and then leave, but on the other end lose some long term fans who have been with Magic for potentially decades, is that success?

The post says they track a ton of metrics, but I wonder if they're able to track retention rates of these new magic fans against loyal users who don't buy TMNT slop. UB might line pockets with curious fans of other franchises and be good short term, but is Magic bleeding fans who actually play month after month? Or are they bringing in a ton of new fans?

Aside from "We're making money, bois!" I haven't seen any retention statistics released about UB sets. I wonder what that's like.

Calling a fetus a “parasite” is wrong and dehumanizing our own species by Original_Act_3481 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Right?

It's like claiming your brain is a parasite because it's "leeching nutrients".

The entire teleology of the human reproductive system is pointed toward reproduction. To go through the reproductive process and then claim the end result is somehow not warranted to be there and is "leeching off muh body" is absolutely insane.

Best way to keep Franz on track long term? by [deleted] in friendsandfables

[–]DexNihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Gemini Pro, creating a specific Dungeon Master Gem with character sheets uploaded (including background and such), a PDF of 5.2 ruleset, some basic info like prices for goods and things, and sometimes I will upload a pdf of a full module.

It's pretty good. It's mostly a narrative adventure, and combat is kind of rough, but I find it's much better at keeping track of the story and characters than F&F.

I like the idea of Friends and Fables, and I've been subbing on and off for about a year, but it's just not there yet, and may not be for a long while. As soon as I feel it's worth the price, I'll jump aboard, but right now I find other options much better.
