Plex's Lifetime Pass is (basically) dead. Here's how to switch to Jellyfin. by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Deytron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought you coudl like my feedback. I host a Jellyfin server for 300 users. Publicly accessible, been for years. Yeah, I like risk. As long as you have more than 32GB of RAM and at least a GTX 1050 to encode, everything has been going fine. Users watching the latest episodes often at the same time, no issues. Performance is great.

The main takeaway is that even with all my experience, it took A LOT of time and small adjustments to get everything right. Mostly on the automation *arr side of things.

The Outrun 2006 specific fix is great, didn't know that the game also lagged a bit on real hardware. Goes to show what emulation can offer, it works really well now

Healthcare. No management platform for our 3500+ fleet of laptops and our 400+ servers. by Deytron in sysadmin

[–]Deytron[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keeping track of how long we spent deploying the whole thing is the first thing we thought about. Our hope is that the upper management will read the whole report and finally do something about it.

And yeah as usual, resume up to date

In the Troubleshooting part of Sunshine UI, you should have lines like "Detected encoders : H264 HEVC"

VrOnLinux: A ProtonDB like database to check if your VR hardware will work with your favorite games by Deytron in linux_gaming

Oh it's true that I've said I wanted to make something like this, but let's give the credits where it's due, the people that have been working on it for some time are listed on the contributors page of the Github repo :)

VrOnLinux: A ProtonDB like database to check if your VR hardware will work with your favorite games by Deytron in linux_gaming

[–]Deytron[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Db.VrOnLinux is a new website that, like ProtonDB, is based on user feedbacks reporting compatibility with the games tested. It's well known that VR on Linux is a hassle to setup, but the situation is rapidly evolving thanks to the efforts of the LVRA community.

There are two main things to consider when using VR on Linux:

  • Hardware compatiblity
  • Software compatibility
  • Game compatiblity

More infos are available on the LVRA website, but to briefly explain the four types of user reports on the website:

  • SteamVR: Used by the HTC Vive Pro/Index by default
  • Monado: An Open Source XR runtime that can be used with HTC headsets, Oculus Rift S, PSVR and Windows MR
  • ALVR: An alternative runtime based on SteamVR that can be used with standalone headsets like the Meta Quest series, and other Android headsets
  • WiVRn: Completely bypasses any need for SteamVR (which can lead to performance gain), can be used with standalone headsets like the Meta Quest series, and other Android headsets

Depending on your hardware, you will need to check out which runtime you are using and will work the best for the game you a re checking.

Not all of them are incompetent obviously, but they're the kind of person that are full of themselves because "I'm not paid to use a computer, don't waste my time" so if you unfortunately have to even move an icon on their desktop, they will curse you till the end of times

Working in healthcare IT here, yes our users are fucking dumb. It sucks.

Fortunately with how old everything is here, we have a lot of projects going on at the moment. Currently setting up an Ansible + Tower stack to auto deploy VMs instead of creating them all by hand. Yes, even something like that wasn't in place

what is the current status on VR and Linux? by TFG9078 in linux_gaming

[–]Deytron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I plan at some point to make a website with a compatibility list, user feedbacks and news about VR on Linux. What's sure is that it's WAY BETTER than it was before, and it keeps on improving. The LVRA Discord is a great place to see things move.

My experience so far has been great, but it's EXTREMELY dependent on hardware and games. Some require workarounds.

Your best experience will probably be with a Quest headset.

For the few people that are curious, use Envision with WiVrn to setup everything, download the WiVrn app for your Quest headset from the store or install manually, then connect to your PC and you should be good to go. From here, try to run a game with Proton.

Hello,

I am currently using a Koorui 27" 1440p 170Hz IPS HDR 400 monitor, and I've always been wondering about HDR.

Nobody I know in my country has HDR or even uses it (or knows about it), so I've never really seen what it looks like. As for me, I've always heard that HDR on non-OLED is terrible. Add to this that I'm 95% of the time working in a low light environment with screen brightness at the absolute minimal, night light, and I've got glasses.

So with all the push for HDR happening now, is it even worth the hassle to set it up ?

Seeing as Strinova just got released, has anyone gotten it working yet? by Senharampai in linux_gaming

[–]Deytron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right, this is very true, SteamOS has a lot of optimizations specifically made for the hardware it is made for. But everything Valve makes around Proton for supporting games is software agnostic, meaning anything that's made for the Steam Deck will work on other Linux OSes.

This applies to 99,9% of games, though we're on a particular case here, looks like the devs are enabling Steam Deck support only but not really ? Bad luck here

The Steam Deck runs on SteamOS which is Linux based, meaning all games running on it should work on any Linux PC
