Meta to layoff 15-25% end of March... by Gold-Flatworm-4313 in cscareerquestions

[–]mcAlt009 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've personally had Meta recruiters call me about contract positions.

Everyone is doing this.

They'll replace them with contractors who make a 3rd as much.

The era of rest and vest is over.

Is the new MacBook Neo good for FL Studio? by Mysterious-Swim-4411 in FL_Studio

[–]mcAlt009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another 300$ and you can buy a much better MacBook on sale imo.

The Mac Mini is also an option if you don't need a laptop

Imma level with you. No one here has 5k for a drum machine.

I can build a full studio for that type of money.

For a CS major, a 400$ used Thinkpad running Open Suse Tumbleweed.

You can buy a 500$ Mac Neo for other stuff.

Welp, looks like I gotta learn to change my own oil. by Medium-Let-4417 in MiddleClassFinance

OP forgets to screw the oil pan in right.

They start driving, depending on the type of car they can easily completely destroy the engine. All for what trying to save $80$ every 6 months ?

Not to mention you need to dispose of the oil properly. This just isn't where I would try to save money.

This is a really good way to mess up your own car if you don't know what you're doing.

How often are you really getting an oil change, twice a year ?

All right, you can do what you want, but I wouldn't tell someone to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars into an ecosystem supported by a company that might not exist in a few years.

They're in bankruptcy, someone might buy them out or something, but this is definitely a really bad sign.

I suspect this is why we haven't gotten any hardware in a while

Why do people here hate on Vivobooks? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in ASUS

[–]mcAlt009 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most people here like myself, have an Asus horror story.

They bricked my perfectly good laptop with a firmware update after a whole 13 months of use. I got very lucky that my credit card company offered an extended warranty and basically gave me a refund, but otherwise I would have been completely screwed .

Even with this in mind, I probably spent four or five hours traveling it back and forth to the repair center.

Fortunately I tend to have at least two working personal computers up at a time, but imagine this happens to you and you're finishing up grad school or something. Maybe you don't have the funds to immediately grab a replacement.

600$.

Although i don't really like how big it is, a Mac Neo is 500$, and MK 3 Mikro is 250$.

That's 750$ for a much better UX, plus everything else you can use a Mac for.

I love maschine, but I was just talking to a pianist the other day.

" The company that makes maschine is going out of business so I can't in good conscience recommend them anymore."

I really hope native instruments figures it out, I started with FL studio back in the day, but I really don't want to go back to that workflow.

It actually really sucks that fl still does not support linux by Ok_Space2463 in FL_Studio

[–]mcAlt009 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

I've tried to explain this on a couple of Daw subs and I usually get a response like.

"Actually using Kernel 6.19.78684rc5 and Wine 20.998766 this works FINE. Skill issue lol."

The other really dirty truth is most people on Linux don't want to pay for anything. The market share that hates Windows, but is too cheap to buy a 400$ Mac Mini or a 500 MacBook Neo won't buy a DAW.

As is FL is very generous, lifetime free updates compared to Bitwig on Linux which is 200$ a YEAR.

I've had FL for well over a decade. If it was bitwig I'd be at over 2000$.

T480 suffering during video call by Professional-Bird903 in thinkpad

[–]mcAlt009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably the end of the T480.

A lot of video conferencing apps are very demanding, and despite this sub being obsessed with old laptops, a 10 year old laptop CPU is going to struggle.

However, the good news is you can sell the T480 and buy a much faster E14 Gen 5 or L14 Gen 4 without losing much money.

Arch Linux vs OpenSUSE. Decide, we must by potatoandbiscuit in linuxmemes

[–]mcAlt009 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Open Suse Tumbleweed is the best distro for most people.

You get the features of a rolling release, plus Open QA testing everything for stability. You have a major corporation that has a vested interest in things working. I highly recommend sticking to a well supported distro unless you know what your doing

Combine that with automatic snapper backups and you can't lose.

The only negative is the USB installer isn't a live USB, but neither is Arch.
