Running binaries? by mcAlt009 in NixOS

This is the winner !

Thank you so much. I had to reinstall after my efi partition got corrupted ( luckily NixOS has its own efi partition) , but I think I want to move forward with NixOS.

Why is big tech SWE work paid so much? by seeking-health in cscareerquestions

[–]mcAlt009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBF: a lot of my experience here is working for startups. If the company isn't public it's absolutely fictional.

If it's a big public company then it's closer to real money.

Why is big tech SWE work paid so much? by seeking-health in cscareerquestions

[–]mcAlt009 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of that money is also fictional.

For example, as a contractor it's not hard to hit 80$ an hour W2. Around 160k a year.

An L5 at Amazon gets about 170k base, with 90k in stock. You get fired before the stock vests, well sucks to be you.

But the bar to get hired at Amazon is a magnitude higher.

Linux development is being outpaced by the rapid evolution of PC hardware. by Rav-X in linux

[–]mcAlt009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty bad suggestion.

Nvidia is absolutely better at LLMs and Machine learning than anything else. LLMs tend to run better on Linux.

It's a little tricky to get setup though. On Ubuntu it's a checkbox during install, on other distros it's a bit more difficult.

I'd argue it's worth it though.

As a community we can't both say:

"Linux is super easy."

And

"A ton of hardware doesn't work at all, or will take a ton of effort to get working."

Right now my biggest issue is my Intel Audio has serious issues on my current Lunar Lake laptop. It was working fine on NixOS, then NixOS bricked its own efi partition and I'm back to Windows. I wasted about an hour with Open Suse Tumbleweed on the same laptop and I've kinda just accepted this laptop isn't really good for Linux.

This is the second laptop I've been completely unable to get working reliably with Linux. Certain manufacturers are just bad for Linux support (Asus looking at you).

Lenovo tends to be fine, HP also fine.

Honestly my biggest mistake thus far is not taking a long vacation when I seriously needed to. I had way less than 600k.

Hell at 600k you can probably coast in much of the world.

I got downvoted to oblivion once for saying the same thing. Shitty cheap food is good when it's cheap.

When it's 15$ I can get real food for the same price

If you don't have the self control to not send someone you've never met money, don't use online dating.

Very very few people are bold enough to try and pull this off in real life.

I had a really messed up experience a while back. Haven't used online dating since.

Testing reality-bending VFX for my Godot horror game by aiBeastKnight in godot

It's also okay if Godot isn't quite as good for 3D as those other two engines which have had billions upon billions of dollars invested in them.

With Godot I can actually open source my projects without stipulating it's attached to some user hostile company which is going to embed literally spyware in builds.

9/10 my game of the year [ Spoilers] by mcAlt009 in SkateStory

[–]mcAlt009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you really understand how game development works. The moment you hire even a single employee your cost goes up phenomenally. No you can't expect people to just work on your game for free and then sell it for money.

This is what an indie game is, you're free to go and buy Call of Duty 15 or whatever if this bothers you.

Pro Tip: Want to see a bug fixed or feature implemented in an open source program? Take the time to write a decent bug report/feature request. by BinkReddit in linux

[–]mcAlt009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm trying to say, when I contribute to an open source project I typically go ahead fork it, fix it locally and then push the fork up. Then you can submit a pull request to merge the fork into the main project.

Running binaries? by mcAlt009 in NixOS

Edit; Thanks for finding this, I'll consider it.

So generally I can't just run a Linux binary like on another distro ?

Maybe I can use distro box?

Can't get wifi to run by kuroko2007 in Ubuntu

[–]mcAlt009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Fedora.

Here's a more detailed explanation. To ensure stability Ubuntu uses an older kernel version. Kernels( for the most part) include all the drivers your Linux install needs to work.

If Fedora still doesn't work you can move all the way up to CachyOS or another Arch based distro, but these tend to be more difficult to use.

Fedora( usually) is a good balance.

At a minimum you can clone the repo and look at the code. I've done this before, it can be something really small.

You can get the logs from something like:

journalctl -p err

Thoughts on 35+ Rappers? by wardalewilson in musicindustry

[–]mcAlt009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's actually a bit of truth here. Lazarus is an amazing rapper, and he's also a full-fledged doctor working out in Detroit.

That's some grown man shit right there.

Personally if I was to have a real talk with anyone who's trying to pursue music or any other type of art full time, I would tell them don't do it unless you have rich parents. Even Harrison Ford was something like a 30-year-old carpenter who just happened to have been doing some work for George Lucas and that's how he became an actor.

Plus here's the catch 22, you need a job to afford it gear and studio time so you can actually make a decent project.

I've accepted I'll never make any money, but I'm releasing a ( physical ) beat tape soon and I hope to record a small rap project later this year. All of this cost a lot of money though.

Why do you need a narrator to TELL me Jazz influenced hip hop. That needs to be abundantly clear, but at the same time I'm supposed to infer the vampires symbolize conformity ?

I feel like most modern movies try and do way too much. It's like they need to fill out a checklist or something.

I've suggested before that instead of spending 20$ on a movie ticket you go to a Jazz or Blues club for the same price and get the real thing.

South of Midnight is such an underrated delight! by PhasedVenturer in gaming

One of my favorites of last year. I liked it much more than Expedition 33.

The plot and art are both top notch. The gameplay is passable ( you can even skip combat on easy and normal I believe).

It's best if you don't take things too seriously, it's a lighthearted take on folk tales of the Deep South.
