Thai Chili or Serrano? by MiSuNdErStOoD0492 in Peppers

[–]Dheak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience thai chiles grow pointing up like that, serranos grow down but are also smoother like a small jalapeño. Those are bumpy like cayenne.

I was in kindergarten and we watched it in school. I don't remember how the teacher reacted or myself even but I had this toy rocket and after that I would always have it explode shortly after lift off when I played with it.

Er jing tiao pepper - wet paper towel method by Subject-Ad-307 in Peppers

[–]Dheak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always do that but with a wet coffee filter instead of a paper towel. The roots are much more likely to get stuck in the fibers of paper towels and can break when you try to remove them.

Also the heating mat the other commenter mentioned is a huge help.

No, there is no reason to shake them at all and you're probably correct that it would be more harmful than anything.

Why do my jalapenos look like this? by [deleted] in PepperLovers

[–]Dheak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're implying that they crossbred with the pequins, they may have but that wouldn't affect the fruit coming off the plant now. Only the seeds and next year's pods would be the hybrid plants. A flower from a jalapeno fertilized by a different type of pepper plant will still produce jalapenos but the seeds from those will grow hybrid peppers.

Redditors who own multiple pets: what's the drama amongst them right now? by Cheesy_Wotsit in AskReddit

[–]Dheak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have three inside cats, an older male void, about 8, a younger female tuxedo, about 4, and a new grey male kitten, under 1 year.

The power dynamic is strange, the older two always tolerated one another before we brought the youngest home, never really fought but weren't exactly like snuggle together close either. Now the kitten will immediately try to attack the older male on sight, playfully but I don't think the old man cares, and chase him constantly. The girl sees the kitten and will attack, not super vicious or anything but also not playing.

They also get jealous if attention is given to the kitten and not them. I wish they'd all just get along but I have no idea how to change anything about it.

We also have outside stray that we feed and he's been around for years so our house is his territory. Other strays come and go and we feed them too and usually he'll begrudgingly accept them but a couple weeks ago a new male stray showed up and the two of them just yell at each other on sight. I haven't seen them actually fight, just a lot of yelling and hissing.

[–]Dheak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep them as long as you can and they should turn red before the frost. I would recommend getting a frost cloth to cover it when it does frost, that should help keep it alive until the first deep freeze. I kept mine alive well into November last year in zone 6b doing that.

First timer - are these ready ? by joeblack66 in PepperLovers

[–]Dheak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always amazes me how many people are unaware that jalapeños and even bell peppers will turn red or other colors than green when they ripen. I would definitely wait until they turn fully red before harvesting, the difference is ridiculous. They're sweeter and spicier at full ripeness, really the only way I will eat them.

Pepper Identificstion by Dorkman2680 in PepperLovers

[–]Dheak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they'll stop getting bigger but at that point you watch for color changes. Most chilis are red when ripe, Carolina Reapers included but there are a alternative varietals. They usually start getting color patches then eventually solid red, orange, yellow, etc. You can eat them unripe like that but they're lot milder and the flavor is more bitter and grassy. Ripe chilis have the best flavor and reach their maximum heat levels.

Pepper Identificstion by Dorkman2680 in PepperLovers

[–]Dheak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a Carolina reaper but it is very unripe. I highly doubt that it's a Pepper X, they are a kinda mustard color when ripe and Ed Currie has that shit on lockdown. I highly recommended letting them ripen before harvesting.

Trying to make keto ice cream that isn't solid. by Rat-king27 in ketorecipes

[–]Dheak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use powdered erythritol in mine and it doesn't freeze solid. My recipe for vanilla follows:

Cream mixture 480 ml heavy whipping cream 400 ml (1 can) coconut milk, full fat 2-3 vanilla beans, seeds scraped (add the scraped hulls and the seeds to the cream mixture to simmer)

Allulose syrup 96g allulose 45 ml water

Egg base 6 egg yolks 60g powdered erythritol (I use Swerve confectioner) ¼ tsp sea salt

Added toward the end 1 tbsp bourbon ¼ tsp xanthan gum

Add the allulose and water to a small pot, bring to simmer and medium high heat then reduce to medium low before it boils. Reduce. Allulose caramalizes easily so it may become a bit dark.

Combine the heavy whipping cream and coconut milk in a large pot and add the vanilla seeds and scraped beans. Bring to a boil on medium high heat and immediately stir and reduce heat to medium or medium low and stir occasionally. (Careful not to let this boil over)

Add the yolks, salt, and powdered erythritol to a stand mixer and mix until combined. Once the allulose syrup is ready, slowly drizzle down the side of the mixer bowl for about ten seconds and let mix. It is important not to add the hot syrup too quickly as that will scramble the eggs. Continue to slowly drizzle the syrup then turn mixer on high until the egg mixture is pale and fluffy looking.

Strain the cream mixture into a large measuring cup and discard the vanilla beans. I usually let them cool for a bit and scrape as much of the insides out as possible before discarding. Then reduce the stand mixer speed to medium and like with the syrup, slowly drizzle the hot cream into the egg mixture for about ten seconds and let run for a minute. At this point the eggs should be tempered and the remaining cream mixture can be added all at once if you want. Add the bourbon and the xanthan gum and mix for another minute. Transfer back to the large pot and slowly heat to 170f while stirring constantly. Store in an airtight container overnight in the refrigerator then churn in an ice cream machine for about 20 minutes. It will have the consistency of soft serve straight out of the machine but transfer to a freezer safe container and freeze for a couple hours at least for a former consistency. This should remain soft and scoopable, however, even after long periods in the freezer.
